4 Head Coach Matt Leach Indiana 2004 Second season at Indiana State Indiana State former Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced on Monday that Matt Leach has been named the inaugural head coach for the Women s Swimming & Diving program, effective July 1. With a proven track record in the state of Indiana and the swimming community, Leach comes to Indiana State from the University of Wyoming where he spent six seasons, including the last four seasons as associate head coach. He s no stranger to the state of Indiana, as the Portland, Ore., native competed collegiately at Indiana University from Join me in welcoming Mr. Matt Leach as our new Head Swimming & Diving Coach at Indiana State University, Prettyman said. After meeting with a very strong group of candidates, it was clear that Matt is the perfect fit in the Sycamore Athletics family and in the Terre Haute community. He comes to us with a wealth of experience as a coach and has terrific connections in the swimming community for recruiting and scheduling. We are very excited to begin preparing for our initial season of competition, and look forward to celebrating championships with our community under Matt s direction. Leach will take over a program in its first ever season in , and will spend the upcoming season to build and recruit the program. The Sycamores will compete as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference and practices and home meets will be held at Vigo County Schools Aquatic Center. Leach is coming off his sixth season ( ) at the University of Wyoming where he worked extensively with sprint swimmers. He helped head coach Tom Johnson to one of the program s best finishes in school history at the Mountain West Championships, including the Cowgirls swimming to their four-consecutive top-three finishes and the Cowboys second place finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in At Wyoming, Leach helped rewrite the Cowgirl record books, as every sprint event school record was broke during his time on staff. He has also coached sprint swimmers to NCAA and Olympic trials competitions. 4

Leach helped lead Cowgirl sprint swimmer Kelsey Conci to the NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke and the 50 and 100 freestyle. Conci placed 10th in the 100 backstroke at the 2011 NCAA Championships and ninth at the 2012 championships, becoming the first Cowgirl to earn backto-back Honorable Mention All-America honors. He also helped Conci to a 2012 Olympic trials semifinal berth in the 100 backstroke. Leach helped the Cowboys finish seventh and the Cowgirls finish eighth in the EndlessPools.com Mid-Major rankings in Leach also mentored Morgan Hartigan, as she earned All-MW honors in 50 and 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke and sprint-freestyle swimmer Cassie Stelow swam for the Cowgirls at the NCAA Championships in the 50 freestyle in Leach came to Wyoming from Louisiana State University where he began as a graduate assistant in 2004, and then as a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons ( ). At LSU, Leach helped guide several athletes to the NCAA Championships, and a top-25 ranking for both the men s and women s teams. Leach also served as the head age group coach at Tiger Aquatics from After a short time there, Leach was named the 2007 Louisiana State Age Group Coach of the Year for his efforts in his first season. Earlier in his career, Leach was the head coach of the men s and women s swimming program at Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Ind. A native of Portland, Ore., Leach swam in college at Indiana University where he was a four-year letterman and captain. He became a four-time All-American and helped the Hoosiers to a Big Ten Conference Championship in the 200 medley relay as a senior. He also still holds Hoosier records as a member of the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. Leach also performed on the national stage, as he took part in the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. Coaching runs in Leach s blood, his father, Gary, has 35 years of experience in the sport as a head age group coach for the Multnomah Athletic Club in his hometown of Portland, Ore. His parents, Gary and Mary Ann, still reside in Portland, Ore. and has an older brother, Jadam (wife Julie), along with his nephew, Mason and niece, Avery.Graduating from Indiana in December 2004 with a bachelor s degree in environmental management. He received his master s degree, also in environmental planning and management, 5

6 Assistant Coach Bex Freebairn Canterbury 15 Second season at Indiana State Bex Freebairn comes to the Sycamore program from past experiences in New Zealand. Freebairn holds past coaching and swimming experience in New Zealand under their system. She competed nationally until her sophomore year of college where injuries and other aspects led her to stop competing. Freebairn wanted to give back to the sport that she had learned so much from so she turned to coaching. Her father was a swim coach she already understood what goes into the process of making a program successful. What brought me to ISU initially was the possibility of being involved with the Swim team. I jumped at the opportunity of gaining experience outside of New Zealand and being able to get a Master s degree at the same time is a big plus. I consider myself very fortunate to be involved with this team. Having a new program and building a team from the ground up is exciting to be a part of. But I am also very lucky to have the chance to learn and develop as a coach under the guidance of both Matt and Rebecca. I m looking forward to seeing the swimmers and the program itself progress. Freebairn earned her Bachelor of Sport Coaching while majoring in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Canterbury in She is currently working on her Masters of Coaching here at Indiana State. 6

7 Diving Coach Fengting Chen Southern Illinois 14 First season at Indiana State Chen comes to Indiana State from a stint as volunteer diving coach with Southern Illinois, a traditionally successful program within the Missouri Valley Conference. She also swam two years for the Salukis from where she was a two time first team all-conference selection, an MVC Scholar-Athlete and earned a second place finish at the 2014 MVC Championship meet in the three meter dive along with a third place finish in the one meter. I d like to thank coach Leach for this opportunity. I feel so lucky to be involved with the ISU swimming and diving team. I couldn t be more excited to get started with the new program as this is not only a great opportunity for my career, but also great for developing this program at the collegiate level. I m looking forward to seeing how big of a success the Sycamore s can be this coming year, said Chen. 7

Athlete Bios JOELLE BORCHERS Junior Back/Free Atlanta, Ga Picked up a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke against Butler...posted a time of 1:40.15 in the 200 yard freestyle relay, coming out in second place for the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet. Before ISU- Swam at North Central High School in Indianapolis picked up a first place finish in the sectional championships in the 100-yard backstroke (59.83) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (25.02) in posted a time of 1:00.42 in the 100-yard backstroke in the Indiana State Championships as well swam club for Lawrence Swim Team. Personal- Joelle Borchers joins the Sycamore family coming from her hometown of Atlanta, Ga. Borchers is a product of Woodward Academy high school where she was a state champion in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay. Borchers swam club for Dynamo Swim Club out. Joelle is the daughter of Chuck and Oni Borchers and has one sibling, Tejan. She is currently majoring in nursing. Personal- Born Emily Grace Boomershine on September 23 in Indianapolis, IN. daughter John Boomershine and Shelly Bommershine has two siblings, Erin and Sam. 11

12 12 MADISON BRAND Freshman Free/IM/Back Pendelton, Ind. Athlete Bios Personal- Madison Brand comes to Indiana State from Pendleton, Ind. where she attended Pendleton Heights High School. Brand is a school record holder in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 200 IM. She was also a four time team Co-MVP and Co-Captain for one season. Madison swam club for Pendleton Swim Club under direction of head coach, Mindy Hertzler. During her time with Pendleton she was a state qualifier in multiple events as well as a record holder in many others. Madison is the daughter of James and Lori Brand and has one sibling, Tyler. She plans to major in elementary education. CIERRA CAMPBELL Sophomore Free Lawrence, Kan Picked up a record time in the 500- yard freestyle (5:06.40) at the Missouri Valley Conference... achieved a record time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:54.19) at the Missouri Valley Conference...earned a record time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.94) at Southern Illinois University... placed second place in the 500-yard freestyle versus Illinois State. BEFORE ISU Ranked as the No. 3 recruit in the state of Kansas according to collegeswimming.com earned two top finishes at Free State High School in the Kansas Girls 6A State Championships in the 100-yard freestyle (52.32) and 200- yard freestyle (1:51.36) and a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.80). finished fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle at the 2015 Speedo Championship Series (17:23.35) and 20th in the 200-yard fly swam club with Ad Astra Area Aquatics (AAAA) and is strong in the freestyle and butterfly. Campbell s father, Clark Campbell, is the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks Women s Swimming and Diving team. Athlete Bios 2017 Preformed with a time of 1:09.13 in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Bearcat Invitational... earned a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference finals (1:07.23) in the 100-yard breaststroke. BEFORE ISU A two-year letterwinner at Astoria High School in Astoria, Ore. team s MVP for two seasons holds three records at Astoria in the 500 free, 200 IM and 100 Fly has competed in the Oregon State meet since 2008 and was a senior sectionals finalist from swam club with Hillsboro Heat in Hillsboro, Ore. and is ranked 25th in the state of Oregon by collegeswimming.com. PERSONAL Born Taylor Lee Christie on March 13 in Astoria, Ore. daughter of Joe Christie has three siblings, Shannon, Jodi, Julia. ALLIE ENGSTROM Sophomore Back Beaverton, Ore Qualified in the Missouri Valley Conference Finals for the 200-yard backstroke...achieved a best personal time (2:06.56) in the 200-yard backstroke... picked up a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke (59.36). Personal- Jordan Gramlich joins the Sycamore family coming from Jefferson City, Mo. where she graduated from Helias High School. Gramlich was a member of SADD, Young Republicans, and was a student ambassador during her time at Helias. Jordan swam club for Columbia Swim Club out of Columbia, Mo. During her time with Columbia she posted her fastest times in the 100 and 200 breastroke and the 100 and 200 butterfly. Jordan is the daughter of David and Julie Gramlich and has one sibling, Maddie. She is planning to major in psychology Picked up record times in the 100- yard backstroke (57.94) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.46) at the Missouri Valley Conference...competed in the 200-yard and 400-yard Medley Relays...achieved personal best times in the 50-yard freestyle (25.53) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.03). BEFORE ISU A four year letterwinner at Lafayette High School all-state performer in the 100 free, 100 back, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay posted her best time in the 50 Free at the NCSA Spring Championship on March 15 (25.09) and set a new best in the 100 Free at the Missouri Girls State Championship (52.39) swam club with Rockwood Swim Club in Ellisville, Mo. 13th ranked swimmer in the state of Missouri by collegeswimming.com. PERSONAL Born Kendall Nicole Hansen on July 25 in Lodi, Cal. daughter of Todd Hansen and Isabel Hansen has two siblings, Lauren and Parker. 14

15 HENA HASSAN Freshman Back/Free Bettendorf, Iowa Athlete Bios MYKENZIE KOSTKA Sophomore Fly Fort Wayne, Ind. Personal- Hena Hassan joins Indiana State from Bettendorf, Iowa. Hassan was a member of the Honor Roll throughout her high school career. She swam club for Lan Four Aquatics also under the direction of coach Demian Werner. During her time with Lane Four she was a state qualifier, sectional qualifier, and future s qualifier. Hena is the daughter of Syed and Ageda Hassan and has one brother named Omer. Hassan plans to major in nursing Achieved a personal best time in the 100-yard butterfly (58.50)... earned a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Finals for the 200-yard butterfly...earned a strong time (58.50) in the 100-yard butterfly at the Missouri Valley Conference... achieved a personal best in the 50-yard freestyle (25.28). BEFORE ISU Swam for Carroll High School and posted fifth place finishes in the 100-yard fly (58.42) and 50-yard freestyle (24.65) at sectional championships also helped the 200-free style relay to a seventh place finish at the state championships swam club with Northwest Aquatic Club Swimming in Fort Wayne. PERSONAL Born Mykenzie Kostka on October 3 in Indianapolis, IN. daughter of Randy Kostka and Michelle Kostka has one sibling, Alexis Kostka. 15

16 VIVIAN KRITIKOU Freshman Free Thessaloniki, Greece Athlete Bios ALEX MALMBORG Sophomore Free Burbank, Ill. Personal- Vivian Kritikou joins Indiana State coming all the way from Kalamaria, Thessaloniki Greece. Kritikou attended 2nd General Lyceum of Kalamaria for her high school career. As the only swimmer in her school she practiced with her club coach, Miltos Chalkias along with the rest of her club team, Iraklis Thessalonikis. Kritikous received top grade honors throughout her high school career. She was also a three time national champion in the 1500 meter freestyle, was first nationally in the 400 meter freestyle in 2015 and 2016, and has been a member of the junior national team since Vivian is the daughter of Apostolos and Ira Kritikou and has one sibling named Danae. She plans to major in physical education and exercise science Picked up school records in the 50- yard freestyle (23.44) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.72) at the Missouri Valley Conference...achieved a personal best in to 100-yard backstroke (1:00.95). BEFORE ISU Malmborg is an Illinois Girls Sectional Champion in the 50 Free and a third place finisher in the 100 Free this season for Reavis High School team captain and helped her team to a conference championship, sectional championship and was a state qualifier all-conference and all-sectional honoree and qualified for junior nationals, Speedo sections and Speedo futures swam club with the Oak Lawn Lightning. PERSONAL Born Alexandra Leigh Malmborg on November 7 in Burbank, Ill. daughter of Steven Malmborg, and Terri Malmborg has one sibling, Alison. 16

17 MARTINA MARKS Junior Free/Fly/IM Yehud-Monoson, Isreal Athlete Bios KATHERINE MINATRA Sophomore Back/Free/IM Rockvale, Tenn. Personal- Martina Marks joins the Sycamore family transferring from San Diego State where she competed for two seasons. While at SDSU Marks competed in middle to long distance events earning all-mountain West honors as a member of SDSU s 800 freestyle relay team at the conference championship meet in During her sophomore campaign Marks most notably placed first in the 500 and 1000 freestyle against Oregon State on Nov. 4 and placed first in the 500 free and second in the 200 fly plus first in the 200 free relay vs. Pepperdine on Dec. 2. Marks earned Mountain West All-Academic Team honors as well. Prior to attending SDSU Marks placed 12th in the 200 freestyle at the 2014 Junior European Championships and participated in the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Martina is the daughter of Piotr and Iwona Marks and has one sibling, Kacper. She is currently majoring in business administration and management MVC Finals qualifier in the 200-yard backstroke...achieved a personal best time (4:39:08) in the 400-yard individual medley...picked up a top times in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:02.51) and the 1,650 freestyle (18:26.70). BEFORE ISU Swam for all four years was a captain all four year and earned the team s Most Valuable Player honors along with MVP honors from the Daily News Journal all-region second team and all-area selection in the pool swam club with Excel Aquatics in Nashville Tenn ranked as the 21st swimmer out of the state of Tennessee by collegeswimming.com. PERSONAL Born Katherine Ann Minatra on August 12 in Murfreesboro, TN. daughter of Clay Minatra and Elizabeth Minatra has one sibling, Mary. 17

18 MARLENE PAVLU-LEWIN Freshman Back/Free Nacka, Sweden Athlete Bios ELISABETH PESKIN Sophomore Free Fishers, Ind. Personal- Marlene Pavlu Lewin joins Indiana State coming all the way from Nacka, Sweden. Pavlu Lewin attended Nacka Gymnasium where she earned the honorary award. Her club career was with SK Neptun. Marlene is the daughter Bohdan Pavlu and Mona Lewin, she has one sibling named Hannah. She plans to major in science Achieved personal bests in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:49.31) and the freestyle (17:58.37)... picked up a personal best in the 400 individual medley (4:41.32)... recorded a time of 5:19.14 in the 500-yard freestyle and a time of 2:13.03 in the 200- yard backstroke. BEFORE ISU Swam the 200 free and 500 free at Fishers High School in Fishers, Ind. helped Fishers to a state runner-up finish as a junior and conference and sectional championships as a sophomore set a personal-best in the 500 free (5:00.84) and 1650 free at the 2016 IHSSA state championships was named an Academic All-American, Academic All-State and earned a four year varsity athlete award also earned the Heart of a Tiger award for teammate with the most spirit and leadership swam club with Fishers Area Swimming Tigers where she finished fifth in the state championships in the 1650 free and earned a Speedo sectional championship. PERSONAL Born Elisabeth Ann Peskin on Jan. 6 daughter of Jennifer and Bryan Peskin has two siblings, Jonathan and Zachary. 18

Athlete Bios EMILY RATLIFF Sophomore Breast Fishers, Ind Achieved a school record in the 100- yard butterfly (55.80) at the Missouri Valley Conference...picked up top times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.28) and the 500- yard freestyle (5:10.77)... BEFORE ISU Price is a two-time MVP for Thurston High School in Springfield, Ore. and ranked No. 13 in the state of Oregon by collegeswimming.com. She is an Oregon LC Championships runner-up in the 200 IM and third place finishes in the 200 IM and 200-freestyle. She also earned an 11th place finish in the 100-fly and was a 12th place finisher in the 2015 Speedo Champions Series (Federal Way) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.34). She swam club with Willamalane Swim Club in Springfield, Ore Ratliff gained an entry to the Missouri Valley Conference finals in the 100- yard breaststroke (1:07.23)... achieved a notable performances in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.41) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.70)...swan in the 200 individual medley (2:15.88). BEFORE ISU Swam at Hamilton Southeastern High School and part of a team that finished fourth place overall at the Indiana High School state meet and conference and sectional champions from a 2013 sectional champion and state qualifier in the 100-breaststroke (1:09.44) and earned the team s Most Improved Award in 2015 swam club with Southeastern Swim Club in Fishers, Ind. BEFORE ISU The Sycamores first international signee, Saez-Illobre hails from Madrid, Spain where she swam for Real Canoe during her prep career. Personal- Megan Schade comes to Indiana State from Bettendorf, Iowa where swam for Bettendorf High School. Schade a member of the Honor Roll, French Honor Society, and NSHSS. She was also an academic varisty letter winner, a state qualifier, and a member of the MAC all-conference team. Schade swam club for Lan Four Aquatics under the direction of coach Demian Werner. 21 KERRY TEPE Freshman Breast/IM Cincinnati, Ohio Personal- Tepe joins the Sycamores coming from Cincinnati, Ohio where swam for Colerain High School under the coaching of her mother, Stacey Tepe. Tepe was a four time district qualifier, three time state qualifier, second team all-conference, and holds the records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Kerry competed in club swimming with the Powel Crosley Jr. YMCA Tigersharks. During her time with the Tigersharks she earned National Team Captain as well as breaking the records in the 50 and 200 breaststroke, which she still holds.
