2 Season Preview Outlook Miami University Swimming and Diving Swimming and Diving Preview After winning its 15th Mid-American Conference title last season and sending off the graduating seniors with their fourth consecutive conference championship, the Miami women s swimming and diving team heads into the season on a Drive for Five. Seeking his fifth straight MAC title a feat accomplished only once in school history when the RedHawks won seven conference titles in a row from 1982 to 1988 head coach Dave Jennings returns 22 letterwinners from last season s MAC Championship squad. This season, the class of 2006 attempts to become the sixth group of RedHawks, along with the classes of 1986, 1987, 1988, 1999 and 2005, to win every MAC title in each year they have competed. Every year is completely different, Jennings said. The team is a little bit different, the group dynamic is a little bit different, and we try to approach each year as starting anew. It is important for our team to realize that every year is a completely new challenge. Miami returns five All-MAC performers from a year ago, including a trio of seniors Laura Armbruster, Christin Eberst and Katie Unger who garnered first-team allconference honors. Eberst and Unger both won gold medals at the conference meet in the one-meter dive and 100 breaststroke, respectively, while Armbruster was a silver-medal winner in the 400 IM. The return of the RedHawks two All-MAC second team selections, sophomore Kristen Bezier and senior Katie Forster, also adds depth and experience to the RedHawks returnees. Forster and Miami s six other seniors four of whom are school record holders give the RedHawks the veteran presence necessary to compete for another conference title. Our goal is to compete for a conference title, Jennings said. Trying to win a MAC title is what we are striving to do year in and year out, and if we can compete and swim and dive as our best, that is the ultimate. Every year is a completely different opportunity. BREASTSTROKE TOP RETURNERS: Katie Unger, Laura Armbruster, Kristen Bezier TOP NEWCOMERS: Courtney Shearer, Paige Iversen Led by a pair of all- MAC performers, Miami boasts two of the top returning breaststrokers in the conference with senior Katie Unger and sophomore Kristen Bezier. Unger, an All- MAC First-Team honoree, was the MAC Champion in the 100 breast, while Bezier garnered secondteam all-conference honors after finishing in Senior Katie Unger second place behind Unger. The duo of Unger and Bezier also are joined by senior Laura Armbruster, a bronze-medal winner in the 200 breast. Katie and Laura have been the cornerstone of our program, Jennings said. Both are former conference champions, and the breaststroke has been a real strength for us. Kristen came in and had an outstanding freshman year, and our new additions Courtney Shearer and Paige Iversen also will add to our depth in the breaststroke. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY TOP RETURNERS: Katie Unger, Laura Armbruster, Lauren Evanosky TOP NEWCOMERS: Courtney Shearer, Malarie Schmidt In the individual medley, Miami 400 IM record holder Laura Armbruster returns after nearly medaling in both IM events at the 2005 conference meet. Armbruster, an All-MAC First-Team selection, earned a silver medal in the 400 IM and placed fourth in the 200 IM, missing a bronze medal by two-tenths of a Senior Laura Armbruster second. Along with Armbruster, returning senior Katie Unger sports the fourthbest time in the 200 IM in Miami history. Laura and Katie have been the staple for us, said Jennings. We have a number of people that could help us in our depth, and I look for the IM to be one of the strong areas in our program. Two returnees who provide depth are sophomores Kristen Bezier and Lauren Evanosky, and in addition, newcomers Courtney Shearer and Malarie Schmidt should have an impact as two of the top high school individual medley swimmers in the Midwest. BUTTERFLY TOP RETURNERS: Katie Forster, Kathryn Stephens, Ellen Koch TOP NEWCOMERS: Allison Stevens, Malarie Schmidt Led by senior Katie Forster, the school-record holder in the 200 butterfly, Miami looks to have a solid butterfly corps despite the loss of Courtney Dice and Michelle Reynolds. Forster broke the 14-year-old Miami record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.09 at last season s Indiana Invitational, and she also was a silver medalist in the 200 fly at the MAC meet. Katie set a new varsity record in the 200 fly, and I think she is one of the best 200 fly swimmers around, Jennings said. She has a tremendous chance to be at the top of the MAC if everything goes well. Jennings also expects juniors Diana Zeleznikar and Ellen Koch, along with sophomore Kathryn Stephens, to provide depth behind Forster. Ellen and Kathryn will provide us with really good depth, and Kathryn has the ability to make a move this year at the conference championships. Ellen also adds solid depth in both the 100 and 200 fly.

3 Miami University Swimming and Diving SPRINTS TOP RETURNERS: Margaret Patrick, Diana Zeleznikar, Katie Forster, Maggi Bulla TOP NEWCOMERS: Jen Nemeth, Alyson Schmidt, Allison Stevens As one of Miami s youngest elements, the sprints return only one MAC medalist from last season as junior Margaret Patrick was the silver-medal winner in the 50 free. The other two sprint events the 100 and 200 free are two of only five events in which Miami does not have a top-five MAC finisher returning, but Jennings expect junior Diana Zeleznikar to improve on her scoring finish at this season s MAC meet. Margaret was the conference runner-up in the 50 free, and she is one of the premier sprinters in the MAC, Jennings said. Diana also has been a consistent conference scorer and continually improved. In addition, seniors Katie Forster and Maggi Bulla finished first and third, respectively, in the B final of the 200 free, while Jennings expects a trio of newcomers Jen Nemeth, Alyson Schmidt and Allison Stevens to blend with Miami s veteran sprinters. We have a lot of young sprinters, and it will be interesting to see how they develop, Jennings said. Our newcomers look like they will really help our program, and you have Maggi and Katie who can provide us with a lot of depth and sprint power. We ve got a good combination of youth and veteran experience. DISTANCE TOP RETURNERS: Katie Forster, Erin Darrah TOP NEWCOMERS: Jenn Flaherty In the distance events, Miami returns only one swimmer, senior Katie Forster, who finished in the A final at the conference meet. An All-MAC Second Team selection, Forster owns three of the top-10 distance times in Miami history in three different events as she ranks first in the 500 free, second in the 1000 free and third in the 1650 free. Besides Forster, juniors Erin Darrah, Amber Kerek and Darcy Meek look to improve in the distance events in their third collegiate season. Katie is the varsity record holder in the 500 free, and Erin, Amber and Darcy will provide some depth for the distance events, Jennings said. The RedHawks are aided by the arrival of freshman Jenn Flaherty, the Maine high school state record holder in the 1000 free and 1650 free. Jennings believes Flaherty will impact the distance events in her first collegiate season. Jenn is going to be a huge addition to our program. We needed someone who could swim the 1650, and she has already shown that she is very capable. BACKSTROKE TOP RETURNERS: Maggi Bulla, Lauren Evanosky, Ellen Koch TOP NEWCOMERS: Malarie Schmidt, Alyson Schmidt Despite graduating Trisha Lamb, the MAC Champion in the 200 back, the backstroke remains a strong element with the return of senior Maggi Bulla and sophomore Lauren Evanosky. Bulla was the bronze medalist in the 200 back at Season Preview Outlook last season s conference meet, while Evanosky finished in the B final in both the 100 and 200 back. Bulla and Evanosky also own times on the Miami top-10 list in both backstroke events. Maggi has been a conference finalist the last two years, and I see her being a big player in the MAC Championships, Jennings said. Lauren has a chance to contribute at the conference meet, and she is one of the more talented young ladies we have come across. Along with junior Ellen Koch, Jennings looks for newcomers Malarie Schmidt and Alyson Schmidt to contribute in the backstroke. DIVING TOP RETURNERS: Christin Eberst, Katie Meister, Emily Armer TOP NEWCOMERS: Melissa Roemmele, Alex Enriquez As the MAC Co-Diver of the Year, Christin Eberst anchors the Miami divers after almost sweeping the boards at last season s MAC Championships. A dual medalist at the conference meet, Eberst was the MAC Champion in the one-meter board and finished as the runner-up on the three-meter board. In addition, Eberst owns Miami records for six dives on the one- (298.20) and threemeter boards (294.00), and she is the top RedHawk scorer in the three-meter board for 11 dives (509.60). Senior Christin Eberst Christin is a very consistent and very competitive diver, Jennings said. Our diving program as a whole could be one of our stronger areas from a depth point of view. Behind Eberst, freshmen Melissa Roemmele and Alex Enriquez add to an already talented group, giving the RedHawks a deep diving corps. Our two new additions, along with Katie Meister and Emily Armer, provide us with good depth in the MAC. RELAYS Each of Miami s relay teams must replace at least one swimmer, and three relay teams the 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay teams each lost two swimmers to graduation. In each of the five relay events at last season s MAC Championships, Miami finished no lower than fourth, including the silver-medal winning team in the 200 free relay, but Jennings will need to find capable athletes to earn valuable points in the relay events. Relays are very important in a championship meet, Jennings said. Consistency is important, and the relays are an area we need to improve on. We have the ability and the potential to make more of an impact in the relays. Our medley relays will be very strong, but our freestyle sprint relays are young.

29 Miami University Swimming and Diving Miami History Words From Former RedHawks Miami University is well known for being one of the Public Ivy schools and is noted for its Cradle of Coaches. Many student-athletes have come and gone from the University, taking a piece of Miami with them and leaving a legacy behind. The Miami women s swimming and diving programs, under the direction of Dave Jennings and Todd Spohn, have achieved greatness both in the classroom and the water. The following are some thoughts from Miami women s swimming and diving coach Dave Jennings and alumnae on how their experiences at Miami University have impacted their postgraduate years. As a coach, I have always valued achievement in the pool and in the classroom, and it is rewarding to see our swimmers succeed in both. The members of our team first come to Miami as a student, and second as an athlete. Our goal is to help each athlete achieve in both areas. Dave Jennings Women s Swimming Coach 1983-Present As a speech pathologist undergraduate and graduate student at Miami, as well as a varsity swimmer, I was encouraged to develop my potential in the classroom and in the pool. Both the faculty and Dave Jennings strove for excellence by fostering an environment and attitude that hard work, determination and enthusiasm lead to success. I am grateful and proud that Miami s goal is one of excellence, and that support to achieve it was given to me both inside and outside the classroom, preparing me for my life after Miami. Maura Cuddeback, 93 Speech/Language Pathologist Captain 93 I am often asked the question, Why did you attend Miami University all the way from Atlanta, Ga.?. The answer to that question is simple. The philosophy of the swimming program at Miami is to create an environment with an equal emphasis on academic performance and athletic prowess. 30 This is Miami Becoming a RedHawk Scoring Grid Miami University Swimming and Diving How to Become a RedHawk... Miami University prides itself on adherence to the NCAA rules and regulations that govern recruiting. Here are a few to remember: 1. NCAA Clearinghouse To be able to compete in college, an athlete needs to be certified through the Clearinghouse. A form can be obtained through high school guidance offices. 2. Letters After Sept. 1 of the student-athlete s junior year, they may receive information about the women s swimming and diving program. is also considered a letter, so one may send and receive at any time. 3. Phone Calls After July 1, a student-athlete may receive one call per week from an institution. The only expectations are during the week of an official visit or during a home visit. Then, an unlimited number of phone calls may be made. Additionally, coaches may make one telephone call to the prospect during March of her junior year. 4. Contacts After July 1 of a prospect s senior year, coaches are allowed to speak with the athlete or her parents face-to-face. If playing in a tournament, coaches are prohibited from visiting with a student-athlete until after her team is finished competing in the tournament. Additionally, coaches may make one contact to the prospect s high school campus during April of her junior year. 5. Unofficial Visits Prospective student-athletes may visit a campus as many times as they desire. They may do almost the same things as on an official visit, but the institution cannot pay for any expenses. 6. Official Visits If a prospect visits a campus with any expenses paid by the institution, it is an official visit. A prospective studentathlete may take a total of five visits throughout her senior year, one per institution. A typical official visit would include attending a class and/or athletic event, watching practice, seeing the athletic facilities, and meeting with academic counselors along with the coaches and team. 7. Scholarship A scholarship can be offered at any time during the recruiting process. The NCAA has granted women s swimming and diving 14 full-ride scholarships. Typically, this funding is divided among athletes. 8. Signing Dates Women s swimming and diving has two time periods in which to sign a National Letter of Intent to attend and institution. Early signing period is one week in early November. Late signing is in early April and lasts until Aug. 1, prior to the athlete s freshman year in college. Scholarship Information In order to receive a scholarship from Miami, an athlete s times entering Miami must be at a level to score at the Mid-American Conference Championships. The level of the scholarship depends on where the athlete s time falls within the MAC scoring range. Athletes whose times score between 1st place and 8th place are eligible for a 50 percent to full-ride scholarship, depending on how many events in which she scores and how many scholarships are available. Athletes whose times score between 9th and 16th place are eligible for up to a 50 percent scholarship, also depending on the number of scoring events and available scholarships. There are a limited number of roster spots available from year to year. So in order to be a walk-on athlete, your times must be close to scoring at the MAC meet. 31 Miami University Swimming and Diving brad bates < < < Director of Athletics Years at Miami: Fourth Year Alma Mater: Michigan 81 On Nov. 5, 2003, Miami University President Dr. James Garland announced the hiring of Brad Bates as Miami s Director of Athletics. Bates had served for the past 17 years at Vanderbilt University, most recently as the Senior Associate Athletics Director. In just the past two seasons, Bates has presided over a department that has made back-to-back football bowl game appearances for the first time in nearly 30 years, as well as earning MAC Championships in baseball and men s and women s basketball, while completing a run of four straight MAC titles in women s swimming and diving. Miami also has won the Reese Trophy, an all-sport award presented annually to the MAC institution with the best all-around men s sports programs, in each of his three years. In addition to the RedHawks athletic success in his young tenure, Bates has spearheaded efforts to improve the athletic classrooms in which Miami s student-athletes compete to rate among the best in the nation. The renovations to Yager Stadium continue, with new stands being constructed on the East and North sides for the 2005 season. Already added to Yager are a state-of-the-art scoreboard with video board, Cradle of Coaches Plaza and two-year old FieldTurf playing surface. Also under construction is a brand new softball field, located to the southwest of Yager Stadium, and a brand new ice hockey facility, slated to open for the season. Paramount among Bates accomplishments has been the department s success in graduating its student-athletes. In the first release of the NCAA s Academic Performance Rate (APR), covering the season, Miami ranked second nationally among Division I-A institutions. Brad is one of the up-and-coming shining lights of athletic administration, says Garland. He is dynamic, articulate, knowledgeable and well-liked and respected by everybody he has worked with. Bates achieved a doctorate in education at Vanderbilt in This followed the bachelor s and master s degrees he earned in education at the University of Michigan in 1981 and 1982, respectively. 32 This is Miami Strength/Conditioning Sports Medicine Miami University Swimming and Diving Strength and Conditioning >>> Strength and conditioning in terms of player development is an integral part of any successful athletic program. Miami University recognizes this fact with its strength and conditioning program, led by Master Strength and Conditioning Coach Dan Dalrymple, MSCC C.S.C.S.*D. Dalrymple, a 1988 Miami graduate is in his 17th year on the RedHawk staff, is a former captain, all-mac offensive tackle as well as a member of the Cincinnati Enquirer s All 20th Century Football Miami Football Team and a member of Miami s Athletic Hall of Fame. He is assisted by the Miami Athletic Department Teammate of the Year James Carsey S.C.C.C. C.S.C.S. and full-time interns Matt Cady and Colleen Day. Carsey is the primary strength coach for the women s swimming and diving team, and he is in his fifth year with the RedHawks. Prior to Miami, Carsey spent two years as the head strength coach for Ashland University, where he earned his Bachelors of Science as well as a graduate degrees in Sports Science. He is certified with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and is a certified Sports Performance & Conditioning Coach for the USA Weightlifting Association. According to head swimming coach Dave Jennings, James has been instrumental in preparing our women to be champions in the pool. Since Carsey began working with the team, our team has never lost at the conference level, and that is no coincidence. Thanks to his innovative and unique approach to strength training as it relates to swimming, he has been instrumental in improving the athleticism, the power and the general strength of our athletes. At Miami, the foundation of the strength program is free weight training. The free weight regimen includes both explosive Olympic lifting (cleans, snatches, presses and jerks) and power lifting (bench, squat and dead lift). To ensure that all Miami athletes use the best and safest technique in the explosive lifts, all full time members of the athletic conditioning staff hold advanced certification as Sports Performance Coaches from USA Weightlifting. The program Dan Dalrymple James Carsey is rounded out with free weight and machine supplemental exercises, as well as medicine ball and plyometric training. According to Dalrymple, The four main goals of our conditioning program are to enhance performance, prevent injury, eliminate weaknesses and build a championship mental attitude. Other areas emphasized by the strength and conditioning staff include flexibility (static and dynamic), power (speed and strength), aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, agility/body control, motivation, goal setting and mental toughness. Nutrition education and consultation is handled by Coach Dalrymple s wife, Registered Dietician Susan Bascone-Dalrymple RD/LD an instructor in Miami s Dietetics Department. All in all, the strength and conditioning program at Miami has greatly increased performance on the field while also reducing both the occurrence and severity of injuries. Our conditioning program is one of the most demanding around, Dalrymple says. Our student-athletes know that when the step on the field they are in better shape than their opponents. This helps prevent injury and breed success. Sports Medicine >>> One of the top priorities for the Miami sports medicine staff is to ensure that all student-athletes attain the highest potential for safe and effective participation in their chosen sports. This includes prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, utilizing the latest techniques and equipment. The main goal of the training staff is to prevent an injury from occurring. This involves getting to know the athletes and determining what factors could predispose them to injury, then acting to improve the situation. This process could include anything from routine taping to strengthening exercises for a chronic problem. Despite all precautions, injuries occur, and when they do, the qualifications of the Miami athletic training staff truly become apparent. Regardless of the severity of the injury, the athletic trainers are prepared to give immediate quality evaluations and treatments for the condition. When the athletes return to competition, they do so after completion of a personally designed rehabilitation program with the goal of getting the athlete back to pre-injury status as quickly as possible. Benefiting from one of the finest training rooms in Division I athletics, Miami s athletes are cared for with muscle stimulators, ultrasound, whirlpools and other stateof the-art rehabilitation equipment. The resources do not end with the equipment, however; the staff of 10 certified athletic trainers and 30 student trainers have established one of the best sports medicine programs in the country. Miami s sports medicine department is directed by head trainer Gale Newton, who is Gale Newton Rebecca Way aided by assistant trainers Jennifer Beardslee, Dave Donnelly, Kevin Morley, Jason Eckerle, Amy Whitman, Rebecca Way, Misao Tanioka, Adam Strang and Mike Young. Assistant athletic trainer Rebecca Way is responsible for women s swimming and diving. Originally from Okeana, Ohio, Way earned her BS in Athletic Training and Sport Organization from Miami University in Prior to returning to her alma mater, she served an internship at Coastal Carolina University.

34 This Is Miami Academic Services/APR Miami University Swimming and Diving Academic Services >>> Miami s athletic department strongly emphasizes that its studentathletes succeed not only in their athletic pursuits but in their academic endeavors as well. Realizing the unique demands placed on the student-athlete, the department feels an obligation to provide the best possible academic aid and support. That is where Miami s Comprehensive Academic Support Program comes into play. Begun during the academic year, the Cindy Veraldo program monitors the completion of the student s course of study and subsequent graduation. The academic coordinators offices are located in the new Walter L. Gross Student-Athlete Development Center and provide Miami s student-athletes with the tools to succeed in the classroom. Miami s academic coordinator staff is comprised of three fulltime counselors and one graduate assistant. David Graham, who joined Miami in 1998, Cynthia Veraldo, who joined the staff in 2002, and Lindsay Fenton, who was hired in 2003, serve as the academic coordinators. Veraldo oversees the women s swimming and diving team, and she is in her fourth year as the team s Academic Coordinator. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a minor in Women s Studies from Miami in 1993 and a Master of Science degree with a focus in Sport Organization/Sociology of Sport in From Cindy served as the Basic Instruction Program Leader/Visiting Instructor in the Physical Education, Health and Sport Studies Department. According to head coach Dave Jennings, Cindy supports our student-athletes in their academic pursuits and also provides them with an opportunity to grow as individuals. Cindy connects student-athletes to resources across campus, and by acting as a secondary advisor to our student-athletes, she keeps our students informed as to how they are doing in their coursework as well as how they are proceeding on the track toward graduation. It is our hope that all of the student-athletes experience success both inside and outside the classroom while they are here, but also in their lives after Miami. The academic coordinator s office is available throughout a student-athlete s career at Miami. They supervise academic needs assessments for incoming grant-in-aid freshmen and follow that up by coordinating student academic evaluations and facilitating individual team study tables. The office s responsibilities include assisting student-athletes with registration concerns and career counseling, as well as tracking their academic progress in cooperation with the University Registrar. The academic coordinator s office tracks more than 550 student-athletes records. The academic coordinators also serve as a referral source to the Office of Learning Assistance for any athletes who may need tutoring or have other special needs. The students with whom the coordinator s office works with may also be referred to appropriate university agencies such as the Student Counseling Center, Career Assistant Center and Office of Financial Aid. By working with the Career Planning and Placement Office, the academic support personnel can assist undergraduates and alumni of the program with the job-search process. Much of the success of the academic support program lies in the willingness of the student-athletes to utilize support services such as tutoring and help sessions. The Miami coaching staff takes an active role in encouraging good study habits and successful academic strategies with their athletes on a daily basis. The coaching staff is an integral part of the support staff, as they meet individually with the staff to provide academic updates. Miami and the APR: Graduating Our Student-Athletes >>> Marking a milestone in its academic reform efforts, the NCAA announced how well its Division I institutions are complying with a new measurement of academic success for student-athletes and teams this past February. The NCAA s new academic measurement, known as the Academic Progress Rate (APR), is based on the academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. An APR score of 925 is equal to an approximate graduation rate of 50 percent. NCAA President Myles Brand said the APR scores put institutions and teams on notice regarding their academic performance. For the first time, the NCAA is holding teams and institutions accountable for the academic progress and success of their student-athletes, Brand said. The goal of the academic reform package is to reinforce good behavior. The new APR reforms are tough but fair. Miami University fared extremely well in the APR rankings, placing second among all NCAA Division I-A institutions in the initial rankings, just three points shy of NCAA I- A leader Navy. Among the programs leading the way for Miami was women s basketball, which tallied a perfect score of 1,000 to tie for first-place among NCAA Division I-A programs. Football also posted a strong showing, totaling a score of 975 to rank eighth among NCAA I-A football programs. Men s basketball ranked 15th overall with a score of 980. During the spring term of 2005, 11 of Miami s 19 intercollegiate athletic teams attained cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Individually, 53 percent of Miami s student-athletes amassed term GPAs of 3.0 or better and 17 attained perfect 4.0 GPAs. THE NCAA I-A APR 1.
