19 2008 Miami Invitational Recap The 2008 Miami Invitational December 4-6, 2008 It was a Miami Invitational for the ages as Coach Dave Jennings's women's swimming and diving team cruised to nearly a 1000-point victory in the 15th annual event at the Nixon Aquatic Center. During the three-day event, the RedHawk ladies established two Mid-American Conference records and 14 varsity records, smashing some sort of standard in nearly every event they swam. Altogether, a total of 75 personal bests were recorded. Team-wise, Miami piled up 2,440.5 points, 943 points ahead of runner-up Florida Gulf Coast and 1,140 better than third-place Illinois of the Big Ten Conference. Oakland University from Michigan finished in fourth place with 996 points. Senior Malarie Schmidt was the star of stars for Miami during the five-session invitational, grabbing two MAC and RedHawk records (100-yard backstroke and the 400 medley relay) and four more Miami marks in relay events. "I can't say enough about the effort our ladies gave us this weekend," said Jennings. "Our relays were absolutely outstanding. It's cliche to say it, but I really attribute our success to talented swimmers and terrific team chemistry. This meet sets us up well for the rest of the season. Our ultimate goal, of course, is to win the MAC championship and this team has the potential to do just that." 29 Words From Miami Alumnae Miami University is well known for being one of the Public Ivy schools and is noted for its Cradle of Coaches. Many student-athletes have come and gone from the University, taking a piece of Miami with them and leaving a legacy behind. The Miami women s swimming and diving programs, under the direction of Dave Jennings and Todd Spohn, have achieved greatness both in the classroom and the water. The following are some thoughts from Miami women s swimming and diving coach Dave Jennings and alumnae on how their experiences at Miami University have impacted their postgraduate years. I am often asked the question, Why did you attend Miami University all the way from Atlanta, Ga.?. The answer to that question is simple. The philosophy of the swimming program at Miami is to create an environment with an equal emphasis on academic performance and athletic prowess. My academic and athletic experiences taught me time management, hard work, the ability to succeed under pressure and the value of friendship. Emily Kabe, 95 Regional Manager, Interquest (Darwin Networks) Swimmer/Assistant Coach As a coach, I have always valued achievement in the pool and in the classroom, and it is rewarding to see our swimmers succeed in both. The members of our team first come to Miami as a student, and second as an athlete. Our goal is to help each athlete achieve in both areas. Dave Jennings Women s Swimming Coach 1983-Present ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Miami s women s swimming and diving athletes have often been noted for their prowess in the classroom as well as in the pool, and last year was no different. The following list of members from the women s swimming and diving teams were acknowledged for their academic excellence: CSCAA Team Academic Recognition: Team GPA: 3.21 Academic All-MAC Karen Frazier (Psychology) Melissa Roemmele (Psychology) Allison Stevens (Journalism) My studies in speech pathology as both an undergraduate and as a graduate student, as well as my varsity swimming experience, encouraged me to develop my potential in the classroom and in the pool. Both the faculty and Dave Jennings strove for excellence by fostering an environment and attitude that hard work, determination and enthusiasm lead to success. I am grateful and proud that Miami s goal is one of excellence, and that support to achieve it was given to me both inside and outside the classroom, preparing me for my life after Miami. Maura Cuddeback, 93 Speech/Language Pathologist Captain 93 I learned and refined how to set goals and then focus my energies on the task at hand to a successful conclusion, be it in winning swim meets or maximizing study time to reap success. This has allowed me to apply these same disciplines in the real world so that I can accomplish my goals both personally and professionally. 30 Becoming a RedHawk... We understand that the recruiting process can be confusing. Below is an overview of what you can expect as an athlete being recruited by the Miami Swimming and Diving Team. Unofficial Visits 1) You are allowed to visit Miami as many times as you want unofficially, meaning we do not support your trip financially. 2) We highly recommend that you visit Miami unofficially because it allows you to get to know the program and the school so you can decide whether Miami is the right fit for you. 3) Aside from meeting with the coaching staff, we encourage you to take a campus tour and sit in on an information session given by the Office of Admissions on your unofficial visit. You can schedule a tour online at: Official Visits 1) During your senior year, you can make one expense-paid official visit to Miami University, which generally occurs in late September or October before the early signing date. 2) Student-athletes are allowed no more than five total official visits. 3) You may spend no more than 48 hours on campus during an official visit. 4) Before you can visit Miami officially, we need to have a copy of your high school transcript and a score from the SAT or ACT taken under national testing conditions. Your academic transcript may be a photocopy of your official high school transcript. You can fax this information to us at (513) Scholarship Information 1) Miami is a fully funded scholarship program. We evaluate a prospective student-athlete s potential in our program as well as their current performances in the pool. Scholarship is usually offered once an athlete has visited either unofficially or officially and it will be offered in terms of a percentage of the total cost to attend Miami. We offer scholarship based upon how a prospective student-athlete would score at the Mid-American Conference Championships as well as at the NCAA Championships. Signing a Letter-of-Intent 1) A National Letter of Intent is a legal document where you agree, in writing, to attend your school of choice. 2) Once you have signed the Letter of Intent, you are prohibited from being recruited by another college. 3) By signing the Letter-of-Intent, you are guaranteed the athletic scholarship agreed upon for one academic year. 4) There is two times in the year that you are allowed to sign a Letter of Intent. The early signing period begins November 12, 2008 and concludes November 19, 2008, and the late signing period begins April 8, 2009 and concludes August 1, ) If possible, we strongly encourage our recruited student-athletes to sign during the Early Signing Period, because it allows you to have a normal senior year and it allows us to focus on the team during our season. NCAA Clearinghouse 1) To be able to compete in college, an athlete needs to be certified through the NCAA Clearinghouse. A form can be obtained through high school guidance offices. Coming on an official visit to Miami University is a great way to become better acquainted with our program and with the academic opportunities available at Miami. It is also a perfect way to get to know your potential teammates. Typically, our official visits begin on Thursday evenings and last until Saturday around noon. During your visit, you will stay with our student-athletes in the dorms and spend your time getting to know Miami. You will attend classes in areas of study that interest you, and you will have the opportunity to meet with the many people who help make our program successful. You and your parents may receive meals, lodging and complimentary admission to campus athletic events. Telephone Calls 1) We are permitted to receive an unlimited number of phone calls from you at anytime. 2) Coaches are not allowed to call athletes until July 1st, after the completion of your junior year. 3) After July 1st, we are allowed to contact you by telephone once a week. Off-Campus Contacts 1) Please send us your meet schedule, as we try to attend as many meets as possible to see you compete. 2) Coaches may meet with you off campus on or after July 1st of your junior year once you have completed your last day of competition and your coach has given you permission to speak with us. 31 Mid-American Conference From two-time Super Bowl Champion quarterback Ben Roethlisbereger (Miami University), to British Open winner Ben Curtis (Kent State University), to World Series winning manager Bob Brenly (Ohio University), to Olympic bobsled team member Brock Kreitzburg (University of Toledo) and beyond, the Mid-American Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the world of athletics. Providing leadership in education and in diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 62nd year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid- American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. Under the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has responded to the ever changing landscape of membership issues and member standards in the fast-paced environment of collegiate athletics. In May of 2007, three MAC institutions the University of Akron, Ball State University and the University at Buffalo were among the 10 NCAA Division I-A athletic departments recognized for excellence in the area of diversity. The achievements were honored by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University. In addition, Akron and Kent State were noted for Diversity Strategy; Akron and Toledo for African American Graduation: Female Student-Athletes; Ball State and Kent State for African American Graduation: Male Student-Athletes; Buffalo for Employee Diversity: Sex; and Ball State and Buffalo for Employee Diversity: Values and Attitudes. Other recent noteworthy accomplishments include thoset of former Kent State President Dr. Carol Cartwright. She chaired the Executive Committee of the NCAA Board of Directors from during a legislative process that keyed legislation relative to I-A status. In addition, in an NCAA report released in October 2004, the MAC led the 11 I-A conferences in long-term graduation rates for football student-athletes at public institutions. The conference holds over 20 national leadership positions on various NCAA committees and Division I Sport Committees and related governing groups. The committee members representing the MAC consist of coaches, athletic directors, and administration from many of the conference s schools. MAC MILESTONES In March of 2006, Chryst and Cleveland Cavaliers President Len Komoroski announced that the Mid- American Conference Men s and Women s Basketball Tournaments will remain in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena through The MAC also announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing all 12 men s and women s teams to Cleveland beginning in The MAC also co-hosted the 2007 Women s Final Four at Quicken Loans Arena, after successfully hosting the 2006 NCAA Women s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena. In 2006, Chryst announced a new, five-year relationship with International Sports Properties (ISP), Inc. to oversee and coordinate the league s marketing and sponsorship rights. ISP, which currently manages 29 college properties nationwide, is considered the leader in the collegiate sports marketing industry. The MAC is ISP s first conference property. ISP is responsible for managing and ultimately growing the MAC s stable of corporate partners, which currently stands at nine FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, Kraft, Marathon Oil, GMAC Financial Services, Aeropostale, Gatorade, Automart. com and Sirius satellite radio. FirstEnergy has been the title sponsor for the men s basketball tournament since its first year in Cleveland in March Kraft has been associated with the women s basketball tournament since Marathon Oil will be sponsoring the football championship for the third time in HISTORY OF THE MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999, following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men s and women s basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on Feb. 24, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division are the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947) and Ohio University (1946). 32 Dr. David Hodge/Brad Bates Dr. David Hodge Years at Miami: Third Year Alma Mater: Macalester College 70 Brad Bates Years at Miami: Seventh Year Alma Mater: Michigan 81 Miami University President Miami University Director of Athletics 32 Since arriving in July 2006 as Miami University s 21st president, David Hodge has been a visible presence among students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Emphasizing the unique qualities of the Miami Experience, President Hodge in his first year created the Top 25 program to redesign Miami s foundation courses and launched the Miami Access Initiative, which provides tuition and fees to Ohio students with family incomes of less than $35,000. In recognition of the tremendous alumni support for Miami, Dr. Hodge raised the goal for Miami s Campaign for Love and Honor to $500 million, extending the campaign through the Bicentennial and incorporating plans for a new Bicentennial Student Center. The Hodges came to Miami three years ago following Dr. Hodge s 31-year tenure at the University of Washington, where he served from 1998 to 2006 as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the university s largest college, with 40 departments, 900 faculty, and 500 staff who serve more than 24,000 students. Joining the UW faculty in 1975, Dr. Hodge held the appointment of professor of geography and adjunct professor of civil engineering. In 1990, he earned the prestigious University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award. Prior to his appointment as dean, he served as chair of the geography department ( ) and divisional dean for computing, facilities, and research ( ). His research, which has attracted grant support from the National Science Foundation and other federal, state, and local agencies, focuses on urban and transportation geography with special interest in the impact of telecommunications. Dr. Hodge served as program director at the National Science Foundation in and was editor of The Professional Geographer from 1994 to Additionally, he has served on numerous Seattle and Washington committees and boards dealing with issues of community development and transportation. A native of Minnesota, Dr. Hodge earned his bachelor of arts degree in geography from Macalester College in 1970 and went on to earn his master s degree (1973) and Ph.D. (1975) in geography from Pennsylvania State University. From 2000 to 2006, he served on Macalester s Board of Trustees; prior to this, he served on the Macalester Alumni Board. An NCAA All-American, he is a member of the Macalester College Athletics Hall of Fame and remains the school s outdoor track and field record holder in the 880 (now 800 meters) with a time of 1:50.2. President Hodge and his wife, Valerie, have two children: Gene, a graduate of the University of Washington, and Meriem, a current Miami University student Media Guide A progressive and driving force behind Miami University s athletic department since his arrival in November of 2002, Brad Bates has been instrumental in not only upholding Miami s storied athletic tradition but also in ushering Miami athletics into the next generation of intercollegiate athletics. Bates unique vision of developing a Culture of Champions at Miami has made the RedHawk athletic program a model for all intercollegiate athletic programs. This past year, Miami president David Hodge rewarded Bates by extending his contract for an additional five years. Over the past six years, Bates has presided over a department that made back-to-back football bowl game appearances for the first time in nearly 30 years, while capturing conference championships in football, ice hockey, baseball, men s and women s basketball, volleyball, men s and women s swimming and diving and synchronized skating. In , Miami s women s teams won the Mid-American Conference s Jacoby Award for athletic excellence, including tournament championships and NCAA berths for both women s basketball and volleyball. The ice hockey program made its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and was ranked No. 1 in the country for 10 weeks, The men s basketball team made its fourth straight postseason appearance, and synchronized skating s collegiate team won its fourth consecutive national title. Miami also has won the Reese Trophy, an all-sport award presented annually to the MAC institution with the best all-around men s sports programs, in three of his six seasons. In addition to the RedHawks athletic success during his tenure, Bates has spearheaded efforts to improve the athletic classrooms in which Miami s student-athletes compete to rate among the best in the nation. Renovations to Yager Stadium continue, with plans for an indoor facility in the works. Already added to Yager are new stands on the east side, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, permanent lighting, Cradle of Coaches Plaza and a FieldTurf playing surface. Additionally, Miami unveiled several new and renovated facilities two years ago: a brand new softball field, a state-of-the-art ice hockey facility, and a renovated field hockey field that was upgraded with a new artificial turf surface and press box. Paramount among Bates accomplishments has been the department s success in graduating its student-athletes. According to the most recent Federal Graduation Rates report, an extraordinary 85 percent of Miami s student-athletes who started college in graduated within six years. That s a six percent increase over the year before, and a 20 percent jump from three years prior. Additionally, over the first three years of the NCAA s Academic Performance Rate (APR), Miami has consistently ranked among the best Division I-A programs nationally, with a number of its individual programs posting the highest scores nationally. Bates, who came to Miami after 17 years at Vanderbilt University, achieved a doctorate in education at Vanderbilt in This followed the bachelor s and master s degrees he earned in education at the University of Michigan in 1981 and At Vanderbilt, along with overseeing the administration of all 15 sports, Bates, a Senior Associate A.D. when he departed, was highly involved in the department s budgetary, marketing, development, licensing and Title IX compliance decision-making. Athletically, Bates was a walk-on defensive back for Michigan from He played for then-wolverine head football coach Bo Schembechler, a 1951 Miami alumnus and member of Miami s legendary Cradle of Coaches. In his four years as a player, the Wolverines won three Big Ten Championships, posted a record of and played in three Rose Bowls and a Gator Bowl. Bates and his wife, Michele, reside in Oxford.

33 ACADEMIC SERVICES Miami s athletic department strongly emphasizes that its student-athletes succeed not only in their athletic pursuits but also in their academic endeavors. Realizing the unique demands placed on the student-athlete, Miami feels a responsibility to provide the best possible academic support. Miami s Comprehensive Academic Support Program began during the academic year. The program s main focus is to monitor and track student-athlete s progress Cindy Veraldo toward graduation while staying in compliance with Miami University, Mid-American Conference, U.S. Figure Skating Association, Central Collegiate Hockey Association and NCAA guidelines. The Academic Support Program is comprised of four full-time members including Cindy Veraldo, who is the Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Academic Support and Learning Center Services. Veraldo works directly with the women s swimming and diving team. Now in her seventh year as the team s academic coordinator, Veraldo graduated with a bachelor s degree in psychology and a minor in women s studies from Miami in She then went on to get her master s degree in sports organization and sociology of sport in 1995, also from Miami. According to head coach Dave Jennings, Cindy supports our student-athletes in their academic pursuits and also provides them with an opportunity to grow as individuals. Cindy connects student-athletes to resources across campus, and by acting as a secondary advisor, she helps keep our student-athletes informed as to how they in their coursework as well as how are they proceeding toward graduation. The offices of the academic coordinators are located in the Walter L. Gross Jr. Family Student Athlete Development Center. The coordinators have the responsibility of implementing and coordinating all aspects of the academic support program for both the men s and women s varsity teams. Cindy Veraldo/James Carsey STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING In today s highly-competitive world of intercollegiate athletics, the guidance and training a student-athlete receives in their strength and conditioning program is every bit as important as the direction they receive on the field. At Miami University, the strength and conditioning program is a source of pride and tradition. Heading Miami s strength and conditioning program is James Carsey, who enters his eighth season at Miami and fourth year as James Carsey head strength and conditioning coach. A former football standout at Ashland University, Carsey understands the direct link between success in the weightroom and success on the field. While the coaching staff is able to provide more direction during the season, it is limited by NCAA regulations as to how much time it can spend with the team at other times of the year, Carsey said. The strength and conditioning staff works with the team all year long and has the opportunity to aid in each student-athletes physical and mental development. Our role in maintaining an individual s drive throughout the year is key in getting the most out of that individual s potential. Carsey succeeded long-time strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple, who was named head strength coach for the New Orleans Saints in 2006 after spending 17 years building Miami s strength and conditioning program from the ground up. Assisting Carsey are full-time assistants Ryan Faehnle, Matt Cady and Cindi Merrill. Coach Dalrymple s philosophy was always that studentathletes come to Miami to be champions, and it s our obiligation to provide those student-athletes with the tools to reach their full potential, Carsey said. We still embrace that mindset, while also working to instill qualities such as pride, integrity, loyalty and dedication. 33

Of all qualified students applying to medical school, 68 percent of Miami students are accepted, compared to 49 percent nationally. The figure rises to more than 85 percent for Miami students who earn at least a 3.2 g.p.a. and score at least average on the MCATs. (2007) Miami s undergraduate and master s degree programs in accountancy were ranked 11th and 18th in the nation, respectively, by Public Accounting Report. The rankings climb to third and fifth, respectively, among universities without a doctoral program. (2007) In an Institute for International Education report on the number of students studying abroad, Miami remains among the top universities in the nation, ranking 24th among doctoral/research institutions. More than 30 percent of Miami students study abroad before they graduate. (2007) Because our academic reputation is a magnet for employers, Miami sponsors one of the largest collegiate career fairs in the country. Compared with on-campus recruitment programs at other universities our size, nearly twice as many employers recruit at Miami, and four times as many on-campus interviews are conducted. (2006) For the second straight year, three Miami students received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the most prestigious award of its type for undergraduates in mathematics, engineering, or the natural sciences. Nationally, Miami was one of 33 schools to have three or more recipients. (2005) A U.S.News & World Report online ranking for 2005 listed Miami s Speech Pathology and Audiology graduate program in the top 10 among universities nationwide that offer a master s degree in this field. Miami is among a select group of universities in the nation that have produced a Rhodes Scholar, a Truman Scholar, and a Goldwater Scholar in the same academic year. Other schools in this select group are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke, Stanford, Syracuse, and the University of Washington. ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT THE RED AND WHITE CLUB: The Red and White Club is the membership organization that supports Miami Athletics scholarship needs. Gifts to the Red and White Club go directly into the Red and White Club Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance to varsity sports programs at Miami. Ultimately, your support provides deserving young men and women with educational and developmental opportunities. It helps our student-athletes pursue a degree at one of the finest institutions in the country, and it affords these studentathletes the opportunity to compete for championships at the highest intercollegiate level. THE CAMPAIGN FOR LOVE AND HONOR: The Miami University Campaign For Love and Honor is a $500 million initiative that will take our remarkable university to new heights of excellence in terms of student financial aid, faculty support, student learning opportunities, and facilities and grounds. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has a substantial impact on the Campaign For Love and Honor. Please support the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics during the Bicentennial Phase of the Campaign for Love and Honor. For more information about the Red & White Club, the Campaign for Love & Honor, or other ways to support Miami student-athletes, contact the Athletic Development office at (513) or RWClub@muohio.edu. Thank you for your support! 35

36 Walter L. Gross Student-Athlete Development Center The hub of Miami s athletic facilities, the $5 million Walter L. Gross Jr. Family Student-Athlete Development Center was dedicated in the fall of This facility, which is located between Millett Hall and Yager Stadium, caters to both the academic and physical needs of Miami s student-athletes. One half of the facility is dedicated for a 10,000-square foot physical fitness center, which includes free and machine weights, circuit training machines, cardiovascular equipment, and speed, agility and jump training facilities. The strength and conditioning staff offices are located in the weight facility. The other portion of the center is devoted to academic enrichment. The center features two large study areas, an informal study lounge, private tutoring space and a computer lab. Both the Academic Support Program and the CHAMPS/Life Skills offices are located at the Gross Center. Miami s athletics program has always prided itself with a strong commitment to both athletics and academics, said Steve Cady, senior associate athletic director and chair of the project design team. This facility epitomizes our philosophy. It is an unbelievable addition to our facilities. Separating the academic and physical fitness centers is a main lobby and reception area, which features a rotunda that dominates the reception lobby ceiling. Miami s rich athletic tradition, headlined by a listing of Miami s past and present All-Americans, is highlighted on the rotunda. The facility opened its doors to student-athletes during the summer of 2001 and had a Grand Opening Gala on Friday, Sept. 21 in conjunction with Miami s football home opener with Cincinnati. This is a showcase facility for Miami University athletics, said former academic coordinator Darcy Shriver. It is a convenient location for our studentathletes to enrich their academic and athletic experience. The Student-Athlete Development Center represents another Miami commitment to first-rate athletic facilities Media Guide
