In 2011, we will continue to maintain strong and transparent relations with our partners and members, as well as devote significant time and energies on our strategic priorities. However, an increased effort and focus will be spent on one of the USTA s top priorities - 10 and Under Tennis. 10 and Under Tennis was on the rise with 121 registered sites (up 44%) in This coming year is filled with considerable opportunities to educate our partners, providers, parents and participants in how tailoring tennis equipment, court sizes and scoring for those under the age of 10 not only makes sense, but is the best way to improve skills and enjoyment at the same time. Thank you for your continued support of this great game. We look forward to serving you! Mike Goldammer Executive Director USTA Northern USTA Northern Yearbook

5 2011 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I am truly honored and humbled to serve as your President for the next two years. I am blessed to be working with a talented and committed group of volunteers, board members and staff to provide our members with the highest level of service. Rest assured, we are all committed to do whatever we can in supporting this great game that we all love. USTA Northern is the guardian of tennis in our region. Although our direct mission is to grow the game, we are also responsible for the overall health of the game. As leaders, we have an obligation to our members to ensure the programs we have direct responsibility for are delivered as a high-quality product. We also have a role to play in encouraging our partners to deliver programs and services in a way that enhance the game of tennis in our community, while also meeting their goals and objectives. The USTA Northern Board of Directors is the voice of the membership. There have been times recently where the tennis community has faced challenges in which USTA Northern did not have direct authority. Our members looked for us to be their voice and representative in dealing with these issues. We acted almost like a union representative advocating for our members best interests. Although we did not always succeed, we made significant inroads. More importantly, we demonstrated to the community that USTA Northern can be an effective force in protecting the game. My vision for the next two years is focused on the following: 1. Having a laser-like focus on our strategic priorities and core programs. 2. Increasing the visibility of USTA Northern inside and outside the tennis community. 3. Enhancing and building our committees and councils. Moving forward into the next two years, we need to capitalize on our strengths and build on areas where we can be stronger. We need to focus on our successful core programs like Adult Leagues, Junior Competition and Jr. Team Tennis, while also introducing new initiatives like 10 and Under Tennis. We must always look at how we can enhance the quality of these offerings and not just operate as is. We must continue to explore new options and accommodate our members ever-changing needs. One of my goals for USTA Northern is to significantly enhance its standing inside and outside the tennis community. In that regard, I am committed to using my experience and communication skills in reaching out to the tennis community and raising its level of under- standing about what USTA Northern does, as well as our many accomplishments. There are still many tennis folks out there who have no idea what USTA Northern is or does. The more people know who we are and what we do, the more Jeff Baill we will be able to accomplish. This is true not only in the Twin Cities, but in all areas of our Section. I have already had meetings with all the Council and Committee Chairs about making their groups more effective. We will strive in getting closer to the communities we serve and being more responsive to their needs. The councils and committees really do much of the heavy lifting in our Section, and I know their leaders are dedicated to being in tune with the members needs. Outside the tennis community, I will represent our interests by engaging with other entities where there are opportunities to support the game. A good example is when school districts and city councils are considering building or enhancing their tennis facilities. I am committed to advocating, personally, on behalf of USTA Northern for the good of the game. I have done this before and would like to see USTA Northern play a heightened role in advocating for tennis facilities and infrastructure. Finally, it is an awesome responsibility to lead a group of talented volunteers. I don t take this kind of responsibility lightly. USTA Northern has an incredible impact on many people s lives. I know our volunteers feel an obligation in making this world a better place. There is no more important thing to accomplish in one s lifetime than to leave this world in a better condition because of your actions. I have been very fortunate in my life and want to use my limited skills and give something back. Tennis has been very good to me and my family. I know we can all make a difference in helping USTA Northern improve people s lives through the game of tennis. Jeff Baill President USTA Northern 2011 Yearbook Visit Us Online at: 5

16 u s t a northernsection 2010 Tennis Festival of the North A Huge Success From Friday night's Demos and Drills sessions to Sunday's conversation with Martina Navratilova, the 2010 Tennis Festival of the North presented by Delta Air Lines was a huge success for the over 3,500 people that attended throughout the weekend of April The Festival kicked off Friday night with two sold out Demos and Drills clinics at Life Time Fitness Eden Prairie. The first session had over 130 adults and seniors trying out the latest tennis equipment while participating in group drills with local teaching pros. The second session enjoyed almost 100 junior players and their coaches in a similar format. The experience of being with players on my team was fabulous, Rosemount High School tennis coach Jeanne Ewen said. Friday night was a hit with my players and I really liked playing with them without being the leader. Saturday s events began with a USTA League Tennis Captains Appreciation Breakfast with three-time Grand Slam singles champion and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Lindsay Davenport. Davenport thanked the captains for everything they do in growing the game of tennis and answered many questions from the crowd. There were also a number of great prizes given away as part of the morning, including a pair of tickets to the 2010 US Open, which was won by Twin Cities adult and mixed captain Dale Collette (Eagan, Minn.), and an autographed Lindsay Davenport racquet awarded to Twin Cities adult and mixed captain Lori Dietz (Richfield, Minn.). Davenport took center stage again with a 45-minute question and answer session hosted by KFAN Radio s Justin Tennis legend Martina Navratilova takes questions from the crowd. Gaard for all attendees of the Tennis Festival of the North. She covered a variety of topics including her junior career, her professional run, her family life now and the current state and future of tennis. The Tennis Festival of the North continued Saturday with sessions ranging on a wide variety of topics from many of the top professionals in the tennis industry including Minnesota native and Wimbledon semifinalist David Wheaton, former WTA champion and Minnesota product Ginger Helgeson-Nielsen, On-Court Off-Court President Joe Dinoffer, Tennis Canada s USTA Northern Yearbook Three-time Grand Slam singles champion Lindsay Davenport poses with USTA League Captains at a breakfast.

17 David Wheaton signs autographs for some young fans. Wayne Elderton and many more. There was also a vendor show in which over 40 exhibitors participated and a Game Zone area featuring QuickStart Tennis and Wii tennis for kids and adults. Davenport and QuickStart Tennis were featured Saturday at the Mall of America Rotunda as well. Children and adults had the opportunity to play three points against Davenport where she showed many of the younger participants the basics of tennis. Navratilova also stopped by the event and said hello to the crowd, while French Open doubles finalist Jeff Tarango participated on-court during the afternoon. Many local communities showcased their programs and assorted media personalities participated, including Gaard who emceed the event. Saturday night's exhibition featuring Davenport, Navratilova, Tarango and Wheaton was the highlight of the weekend as almost 3,000 people filed into the Eden Prairie High School gym to see these great players up-close-and-personal. The first match was a men's doubles match between Tarango and former Gopher player Ishay Hadish against the Minnesota team of Wheaton and former Gopher Reven Stephens. Tarango and Hadish took the set 6-3 with some outstanding shotmaking. Davenport and Navratilova took to the court for the featured singles match. Both players received standing ovations as the crowd was in awe realizing that two of the greatest tennis players in history were playing in front of them. Navratilova and Davenport battled, but luck was on Navratilova's side as she won 6-3. In the finale of the evening, Wheaton and Navratilova faced Davenport and Tarango in a mixed doubles match with Wheaton and Martina winning 6-3. After the match, all four players addressed the crowd and signed autographs. The Tennis Festival of the North was terrific, local teaching professional Greg Hiers said. The exhibition was enjoyable to watch and location was perfect. I hope more events like this can take place here. Prior to the exhibition, over 150 people attended a VIP reception in which all of the players attended and addressed the attendees. Attendees were given the opportunity to have their pictures with Martina and Lindsay (which they receive later at the match) and then were entertained with a private hitting session by the players. The attendees also received transportation to and from the reception, food and drink and sat in either chairback seating along the court or in a reserved section. Navratilova opened Sunday s activities with a highlyentertaining and personal sit-down interview, hosted by former French Open champion Luke Jensen, for the clinic attendees. She addressed her breast cancer diagnosis, as well as how she started playing tennis and her illustrious career. The Festival closed with a number of great sessions including a doubles strategy clinic by Jensen, another doubles sessions from Ajay Pant and a Tennis and Ethics presentation by legendary Gustavus Adolphus coach Steve Wilkinson and current coach Tommy Valentini. Jensen, Wheaton, Tarango and former Davis Cup player Mehdi Beneybka ended the weekend with a doubles exhibition where they focused on strategy and technique for all those in attendance. This event is how to get new players, Ewen said. Every chance my players had during the weekend they would pull their tennis racquet out and play. The highlight for one of my beginning players occurred when David Wheaton saw him playing and gave him a tip on his game. The Festival was phenomenal Yearbook On-Court Off-Court President Joe Dinoffer leads attendees in an educational session. Visit Us Online at: 17
