The Next ITF topology TRIGO? B. Mours LAPP Annecy ILIAS meeting 1

Third generation detector Ideas from the Perugia meeting (Sep 05) Sensitivity: two orders of magnitude compared to initial Virgo Underground site Lower seismic noise Multiple interferometers: 3 Interferometers; triangular configuration? 10 km long 2 polarization + redundancy Rüdiger, 85 Figures from G. Losurdo; Munich Nov 05 ILIAS meeting 2

The European framework* I also tried a raw cost estimate for and discussed it with the SC. Here it is - just a scenario, an exercise to see what can be selled to funding agencies: DM: 100% EURECA + 100% exp with second technology bb: 50% Gerda+Majorana + 100% pure Europe exp. Mega/100kt: 50% of project to be funded < % KM3Net 50% Auger North Grav wave detector Everything else sum over 5 years 150 ME 100 ME 300 ME 300 ME 50 ME 250 ME 200 ME 1500 ME per year 300 ME, now 135 ME --> factor 2.2 increase--> We should generate a "factor-2-pressure"! (term coined by M. Spiro) A factor much larger is considered illusory. Competition is dear: We will go trough only if we have a clear view of what we proposed (from the ApPEC roadmap preparation*) ILIAS meeting 3

ApPEC Roadmap: Detectors Summary ILIAS meeting 4

Why discuss/decide ITF topology? Funding & construction of a new project will take time Driven by the infrastructure (building, vacuum) We need know what we want to build To estimate/justify the cost To do a good lobbying We need to define a detector baseline: topology definition This base line could be updated in the future (but cost increase is difficult) This project should be easily summarized A few keywords are needed:» Like: Underground, multiple ITF, long baseline (10Km is a nice number) The science case must be strong We need statements like» Observed BH merger at z = 5 (?)» Build Hubble diagram to independently probe dark energy ILIAS meeting 5

Schedule for a New ITF (or ITFs) A safe statement: A new ITF (in Europe) will not be ready before the first GW detection.» Its is impossible to build a new detector before Ad. LIGO or Ad. Virgo» Advanced LIGO or Virgo must see something The task of a new ITF is the Observation, NOT the first detection Consequences: We should look for sensitivity and sky coverage instead of coincidences ILIAS meeting 6

ITF topology; L shape? Question: How to best use 30 km of beam tube? Single ITF (L shape 15km arm length): Good sensitivity But holes in the antenna pattern; not direction/polarization; Poor noise rejection Twin ITF with 15km arm length; Best sensitivity But hole in the antenna pattern; not direction/polarization Some noise rejection but most of the ITF parts (laser..) at the same place. Two 7.5 km L shape Sensitivity reduce by a factor 2 Noise rejection Which relative orientation? Parallel or 45 Poor angular resolution if installed in Europe Strong risk to be cut (at least delay) on one site: lose all the advantages ILIAS meeting 7

ITF topology; TRIGO? Triangular configuration About the same sensitivity» At first order 10 sin(60 ) 15 3 = 1 Possibility to build a null stream Laser and active components not at the same place Some direction/polarization possible» Could improve sky location with Ad L/V Able to work in standalone mode Could be sell as an underground LISA Difficult to cut part of the project More complex topology (star, ) Reduction of the sensitivity or laser at the same place ILIAS meeting 8

Underground Newtonian noise reduction Reduce the seismic noise Tall suspensions possible» lower the frequency of the seismic wall Reduce» the dynamic of the controls,» the up-conversions,» windy day problems,» wind farm issues» Site acquisition may be easier (less owners) Long arm may be simpler Difficult to add later on If not asked at the beginning ILIAS meeting 9

Suggested Needed actions Converge on a first baseline 10km arm, underground TRIGO is appealing Build a summary of our science case: See WG2 Set up infrastructure working group» To prepare drawings (lobbying); cost estimate; ITF working group» Propose an initial configuration: Second generation ITF technology (no Cryo. at the beginning?)» Sketch the possible upgrades (requirement on the infrastructure) Add GEO-HF like ITFs with short arms (?) ILIAS meeting 10
