The meeting locations will rotate so if you wish to attend, please contact Bob Walsh bobwalsh10@comcast.net or We just installed new windscreens on the North side of courts 1 & 2. We will begin to remove and replace parts of the canopy at court 5 to match the new one at court 4. Volunteers are welcome. Once again in August we will be hosting one of the USTA Adult Districts. There are four such events each year and the winning team from each level moves on to the Section in Carmel. For the first time all four events
will be held at the same time. The dates are August 13-15, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We will need volunteers for both the Adult Districts AND the Annual Tennis Classic to monitor the water, setup each morning, take down each night, help the officials, etc. How about someone to do a BBQ for the players? If you would like to be one of the volunteers, please contact Bob bobwalsh10@comcast.net. Howard Dickenson, a life member passed away on April 10th. 3 SNMWTL Ladies League News The Sonoma/Napa/Marin Women's Tennis League season ended in a dramatic play off for NVTA'S B-2 team (pictured at left). After winning the second half, the team had to play the first-half winner-wikiup--for the year-end title. It was a tough match; Wikiup squeezed through with a 4-3 win. All in all it was a fun season for NVTA's B-2 team despite the many rainouts.
Kathy Hess, the team's stalwart captain, handled it all with humor and grace. We had a great season! Thanks so much from your Captain Kathy Hess and Co-Captain Barbara Pahl The A-3 and the B-1 teams each came in fourth out of a field of twelve teams in their respective divisions. Good job ladies! The League matches are not easy, to say the least. On May 12, the League luncheon will be held at the Sheraton in Petaluma. Each year awards are given to the teams that come in 1st and 2nd at each level. In addition, the captains vote for the Captain of the Year in each division. In 2009, Kathy Hess was the pick for the B-2s, and in 2008 Jean Montgomery was honored. Let's see who wins it this year! --ng For more information on the League, please contact Nancy Gardner at ngondrycreek@gmail.com, or League practices and matches are held weekday mornings. Membership Report The board thanks the 200 members who have renewed their memberships. If you are one of the 60 members who have not renewed, please send your renewal check to: NVTA, P. O. Box 2225, Napa, CA Dues are $ 100 for individuals and $125 for families. Thank you! NVTA Mixed 7.0 Team Ends on a High Note! Captain Mike Ball Reports-Great news from the courts, We did not finish the season winless!!! Our final match pitted two teams, ours and Vacaville's, in a titanic struggle to see who would finish the season with it's only win. I'm very happy to report that team with the win was the Napa team! Under really threatening skies, all three matches began. Mike Ball and Nancy Coursen won at #1 doubles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2; so then it was up to numbers 2 and 3 to decide the match. Chris and Chrissy Robbins seemed to have the # 3 match well in hand, as they led 5-3 in the first set of their match, then the unthinkable happened. Chris severely strained his calf muscle making a heroic save on a smash heading for the corner of the court. After icing down the injured limb, Chris bravely decided to continue the match, Actually, it was at the insistent urging of his partner, Chrissy, who was heard to utter the encouraging words, " stop belly-aching, you big baby, and get out there and play!" Compromised as he was, Chris resolutely soldiered on. They finished off the second set 6-3, but Chris obviously wasn't the same player. The team lost the second set by the same score 6-3 and they went to a ten point tie-breaker. Chrissy tried to cover as much court as she could for her badly-limping partner; but the Vacaville squad took great advantage of his limited court coverage and pulled out the tie-breaker, So now it was down to the # 2 doubles team to determine which team finished in last place.
Frank Lazerotto and Elizabeth Henderson had dropped the first set of their match 7-5, but both set their jaws and prepared to reverse that outcome in the second set; with Elizabeth turning into an absolute beast at the net, and Frank running down every shot from the Vacaville duo, they stemmed the tide and won the second set 6-4. The fate of both teams would be decided in the third set. The match was played evenly until the score stood 4-4. Then Frank and Elizabeth summoned every ounce of energy and determinedly dove into the end game. As it turned out they had faced and bested the best that the Vacaville twosome had to offer and closed out the match, 6-4. Talk about ending the season on A HIGH NOTE! Blue Devils Take Second Place at Districts Wow, what a weekend!! The Napa 3.5 Senior Ladies aka "Blue Devils" had three fun days of extremely challenging tennis, played in almost perfect conditions! Friendships were started, some continued, and new bonds formed. The MVP's for the weekend were Chris Moore and Hunter Hollingsworth, who played a phenomenal three set match on Sunday - (along with being undefeated on our team). I don't think I have EVER seen players dig so deep and try so hard to win a match (which they did)..you both were truly inspirational!!! To sum it up - Friday we lost 1-2, Saturday we won 2-1 ( at this point we were in SECOND PLACE).. But lost 1-2 on Sunday. I overheard someone saying that this years District teams seemed stronger than in the past. Understatement of the year! The ending scores were so close that the number one team Petaluma, only won by 2 matches! Third and forth places were so close that it boiled down to number of sets lost. Win or lose, it was a fantastic weekend. A special thanks to all our
Napa friends and teammates that cheered us on!!! Blue Devils are : Pam Bellefeuille, Ruth Berggren, Sheila Chapman, Jane Cunningham, Jan Edwards, Cindi Glasier, Esther Guarduado, Phyllis Harris, Hunter Hollingsworth, Joni Kelly, Chris Moore, Susie Savino, Sue Smith, Karen Waite, Kathleen Williams, Debby Wright. 3.5 Men End a Great Season Captain Phil Lampe ReportsThe 3.5 Senior team had a great run this year. We won the league regular season with a 12-2 record and then won the playoffs. Districts was a bit disappointing, but we played well and had our chances in several matches. Our small group of guys just ran out of gas in the end. We ended up 1-2 at Districts, due to a DQ from the team from Cuppertino. Everyone contributed this year and I think had a great time. Special mention to John Liles and Harold Zagunis for winning 2 matches at Districts. Looking forward to next season at 4.0. Wheelchair Event News NVTA member and USTA official, Nancy Baty, reports from the most recent wheelchair event held in Pensacola, Florida- We had 9 out of the top 10 wheelies in the world competing at an ITF $24,000 event. These players are amazing. They even shake hands BEFORE their matches, maybe we should all do the same. 10 Please Close the Gates!!! If you are the last to leave the courts, please make sure the gates are closed and locked. We have found them left open overnight several times recently as well as the clubhouse doors. Vandalism has been a big problem in the past and we have spent a great deal of money on secure fencing and motion lights. PLEASE help keep your courts in good condition by locking up! None of us want extra repair expenses, right? The NVTA Court Reporter newsletter will be published monthly. Please submit articles and photos to Bev Wilson.
