Committed to Promoting Tennis in Napa Valley July 2017 Volume 9, Issue 15 IN THIS ISSU E... A Letter from the President... Tournament Sponsors Tournament Food! Our Volunteers Local Winners Water, Water... Quick Tennis Links Racquet Stringing at NVTA Sportabout Marcus Perry Real Estate.. Greetings! A Letter from the President Where did the time go? The days of summer are ticking away... but the heat? In this regard, summer is still going strong. July we kicked off the Fourth with a bang as we hosted our 40 th Napa Valley Tennis Classic (NVTC). Lorraine (Fazzolare) did a terrific job, as always, setting up the draws (along with the USTA official) and running the tournament desk on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Once again this year, we were honored to have Starmont sponsor our event at the Platinum level. They also provided wine for prizes, tattoos and dampeners! They have been our Platinum Sponsor for the NVTC for over 5 years now. In addition to our Platinum Sponsor, we had the fortune to have many other supporters at the following levels: Gold Sponsor ($500 and above) - The Thirsty Girls Silver Sponsors ($250.00)- Facchini Family Matt Hoskins, CFP, Charles Schwab & Co. Daniel Hunt -RPM Mortgage Annie Moore - Pet Cuts Beverly Saxon Leonard - Saxon Leonard Law Firm
Our In-Kind Donations help us to raise money for NVTA and softens our cost. We are proud to have a hefty list of In-Kind Donors this year Berringer Barbara & Aaron Blakely Domaine Carneros Greg DeLucca Elyse Winery Lorraine Fazzolare Ray Gibson Howell Mountain Vineyards Ericka Iten Alex Lorraine NVTA Volunteers Sportabout Veritiv Vineyard 511 Bev Wilson Zack Miskell (PBI) and Wil Cochrane were donating their time, warm up skills, grilling skills, and stringing skills to our event. Thank you Zack and Wil! Overall our event was a great success. Our food selection, organizedby Pam Bellefeuille and her crew, was outstanding and went over great. Thank you also to Pam, Caroline Simmons, Ingrid Swenson, and Yong Suk Willendrup for donating salads to our food station. Our volunteer crew was superb! Thanks to all of you who helped. Our HITS program hosted by Zack and Wil is coming to a close on Saturday, July 29 th. If you have not had the opportunity to witness this, you missed out! We are so appreciative to our team that offered this program - all Volunteers, Zack & Wil included! Thank you to Lorraine, Zdenick, Kyle, Chuck, Carmine, Alex, and Morgan(our sub!) for doing a fantastic job with the kids! It truly has been a busy summer, and we appreciate all the efforts everyone has put forth to make our club the very best! Our new "Hydration" unit (water fountain) at the Club is the best edition yet! Thank you to Kirk Geyer, Dan Hunt and John Swenson for their time, sweat and labor in getting this installed! (see picture). It is functional and beautiful - saving lots of bottles from the landfills!!! I am so proud and honored to work with such a great group of Board Members, volunteers and NVTA members. We are very fortunate to have the options we do - to enjoy, and live life in a beautiful community, with people from all walks of life, all united for a common reason - tennis for life with family and friends. Thank you everyone. Let us always remember our fortunes... See you on the courts... Ericka PS - College Tournament Sept 7 th - 10 th - Silverado and NVTA!!!!
40th Annual Napa Val l ey Tennis Cl assic Thanks to Our Wonderful Sponsors Bev Wilson does it again! We have to thank long-time member Bev Wilson for designing our banners and swag towel this year. Yes, that's Bev (upper left) holding the towel she designed and we gave to all participants at the tournament. A few years ago, Bev created our NVTA logo design that is on the NEW sign at the entrance to Vintage HS (lower right) on
Jefferson and one also on the deck in the courtyard. Starmont Winery and Vineyards As always, a very special thanks to our Platinum Sponsor, Starmont Winery and Vineyards. For nearly 10 years, they have supported our tournament as a Platinum Sponsor and they provide all the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wine for the tournament awards. Additionally, Starmont donated three pairs of tickets to the Bank of the West tennis tournament at Stanford, which were raffled off each morning of the tournament. This year, as part of our swag, they gave us Starmont dampeners, lip balm and sunscreen and 'star' tattoos. Let's all show our support for Starmont by attending their summer Thursday Night Socials 5-7pm. This Thursday, the 27th, will feature Cousins Maine Lobster and live music by The Hots. Thanks to all our volunteers who, over the entire weekend, selflessly offered their personal time to make this tournament a success. All the work that is needed and tasks to be accomplished before, during and after the tournament are appreciated; from behind the scenes planning, washing the courts, daily set-up and tear-down to decorating our club with a multitude of flags, decorations and tablecloths that made our tournament festive throughout the weekend. Special thanks to Sheila Chapman and Ann Smith for helping at the tournament desk. Your organization skills are superb!!

By far, the most tal ked about at the tournament! Yes,this was the most talked about at the tournament. Thanks to the NVTA Board for approving the installation of a filtered water hydration system. John Swenson and Dan Hunt (pictured) led this project to completion just before the tournament began. Need to figure out how and where to install it? Give Kirk Geyer a call and you will get the job done immediately. And we now have perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing water fountain in Napa Valley, maybe even in all of California!

WTA Tour Napa Parks and Rec Zack Miskel, NVTA Head Pro Will Cochrane, NVTA Assistant Pro Zack' s Corner Fun, The "F" Word of Coaching In a recent visit with Nick Bollettieri, he reiterated to all coaches and students, "You cannot spell 'fundamentals' without 'fun." For those of you who know me, or know anything about my style on the court, this struck home with me in a big way. However, recently I was forwarded an from someone many of us all know almost better than Nick, or even Peter Burwash himself, the disgruntled parent. This parent, after one week of the summer junior program, lamented their feelings that the child, and the many children on court, were clearly having too much fun, and they wanted more line drills. "It's play that makes people unafraid to fail and confident to try new things. It's play that helps us do serious things better because we enjoy them and feel a sense of joy in our achievements." -Jake Orlowitz, Head of the Wikipedia Library When I first read this , I immediately spoke with my assistant professional Wil Cochrane and said, "keep up the good work." To me this was not a negative depiction of our program or our teaching, but a compliment that we created an atmosphere where learning the game appeared fun for even the parent on the bleachers. Not only this, but we were teaching children tennis to children for the first time, and they were able to enjoy themselves while developing and learning the sport. "Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in a different time." -Chinese Proverb I must give credit to my colleague, and fellow professional of the year, Katie Dellich, who responded first and mentioned that PBI was a progressive coaching style, and that "line-drills" are an antiquated thing of the past. You see, the issue was not that Wil and myself created a fun atmosphere, it was that the parent making the comment grew up in a situation where line drills and sergeant like instruction were the only means to development and success. "Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theatre." - Gail Goldwin, author I will readily admit, my first negative remark at training was that I was often too loud and needed to work on the projection and inflection of my voice. Although I again saw this as a compliment to my enthusiasm for the game, I took it to heart and know that I will always have to reel myself in. This game is incredible, and it is a gift that we get to make a living teaching it to students of all ages. If the worst complaint I ever
receive is along the lines of "My child had too much fun." or "Tone down the volume." I know in my heart of hearts I have succeeded. The moral of the story is, if you are passionate and believe in yourself and what it is you do, you will always be able to look not only yourself in the mirror, but any parent or critic who feels the need to step in. Youth tennis is dying in the states, and if we do not continue to work to make children have fun and be successful early on, we may have to learn how to teach another sport to survive. Keep it fun!
