It's Springtime at NVTA! A Message from our President... Dear NVTA Members- Happy Spring! We held the General Election Meeting/Round Robin on March 25 th - what a great turnout! Our day kicked off with our General Election Meeting, where the incumbents Fred Facchini, Dan Hunt, Bruce Lamoreaux & Bob Walsh ran unopposed and unanimously were voted on the Board for another term. Let's thank them for their dedication. We shared accomplishments as an organization and a few things to look for in our future. It was a beautiful day, so tennis called our names as we were all antsy for the sunshine and the game. Thanks to Izzy for organizing a great event and Dan Hunt for cooking, Matt Forbes for setting up and for all of you for attending and participating. The food was delicious and I believe, a good time was had by all. We look forward to our next Round Robin and our tournament. I wrote about change a few months back. We don't like change, good or bad. With a heavy heart, we received Izzy's resignation letter (his Farewell letter to all of us is below). The Board will vote to accept his resignation at our meeting on April 26 th. We have been so fortunate to have partnered with PBI and this partnership will continue. Our loss is truly Izzy who came in to our Club, embraced this "not-sonormal partnership" for PBI, and integrated himself in all aspects of NVTA, from teaching, the rec program, clinics, drills, lessons, supporting the high school team & students, scheduling and the list goes on. I am sure you can echo the

sentiments when I say "we will miss you Izzy...and... thank you... and we hope you will keep in touch, and know that we support your decision." Many of you have met Zack (Miskel) and he will be working out of NVTA as our Pro. I would say he is "filling Izzy's spot here at our Club", but that will never happen. Thank you Izzy - from all of us. Zack, welcome! We look forward to working with you. We are 301 members strong! 87 of you are Lifetime Members. We appreciate your support and your time that you donate to tennis and the community. We are looking for two groups of helpers: first, we need some volunteers to help stain and seal our deck. If you are interested, please contact John Swenson at j.c.swenson@comcast.net to let him know. We will be doing this sometime in May. Secondly, our Napa Valley Tennis Classic (July 4 th weekend) is approaching us quickly. We are looking for some volunteers to work on the tournament and organize a few groups within our tournament committee. If you are interested in helping out with planning the tournament, please contact Ericka at Ericka.iten@gmail.com. We have sponsorship generation, volunteer organizing, food, prizes, etc. that we need volunteers for. You will have direction, but we need hands! Thank you in advance for stepping forward. Enjoy the spring rain and let's all do a "sun dance" to bring the sun back to the Valley! See you on the courts! Ericka Wel come New Members! For more information please visit NVTA 4.5 Women Win BNP Paribas Senior Cup! The BNP Paribas Senior Cup is held every year at Indian Wells, immediately following the BNP Paribas Open. There are over 100 teams and nearly 900 players from all over the country (and a few International teams) participating in the Senior Cup. All team players receive a ticket to the BNP Paribas Open finals and this year we were fortunate to see Roger Federer beat his fellow countryman Stan Wawinka. Our team, The Thirsty Girls of Napa Valley, entered the Women's division and we found the tournament to be very competitive, everyone demonstrated good sportsmanship and we all shared our love for the game of tennis. The Thirsty Girls of Napa Valley NVTA members:

Pictured l. to r. seated: Pam Shephard, Yong Suk Willendrup, Rose Prado, Caroline Simmons. Standing: Laurie Gholson, Ericka Iten, Barbara Blakeley, Suzanne Sandberg and Captain Lorraine Fazzolare The tournament was round robin format, for three days, playing three lines of doubles and three pro-set matches per day. Initially, it didn't seem like a lot of tennis, however, by the second day in the desert heat we felt the added pressure of being in 2 nd place and then 1 st place at the end of the third day. The finals were held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. We were all so excited to have made it to the finals and to be playing on the same courts that Roger, Rafa, Stan, Novak and many others played on just days before. The finals were the best of three sets and our opponents were last year's winners from Palm Desert. The Thirsty Girls came onto the court beaming with confidence. Anticipating the opposing team might switch their lineup, Barbara Blakeley and Caroline Simmons played the #2 position and, sure enough, the opposing team switched their lineup. Barb and Caroline played against the same team they handed a 'goose-egg' the day before. Needless to say, they weren't happy to see Barb and Caroline...again! Caroline exuded patience as she played from the baseline to set up the point until Barb, the annihilator, spotted a short ball to end the point with a piercing volley or killer overhead. They never let up and quickly won their match 6-2, 6-1. Rose Prado (new NVTA member from Sausalito) and Yong Willendrup played #3 doubles. They had very long points, winning the first set 6-4. They were up 5-2 in the 2 nd set and we thought victory was imminent. Then it was 5-3, then 5-4, until finally they closed out the match 6-4 in the 2 nd set to give us the team victory! Laurie Gholson and Pam Shephard played #1 doubles. They won the first set 6-3. Lost the 2 nd set in a tiebreak and were just starting the 3 rd set super-tiebreak when they heard the victory outburst from our team. Perhaps the early celebrating from teammates caused a distraction; they tried to remain focused and barely lost the tiebreak.

Our MVP's played all nine matches and the finals with outstanding records. Barbara Blakeley (9-1) and Laurie Gholson (8-2) were the backbones of our team. The Thirsty Girls of Napa Valley beat the Desert Sun Girls 2-1 to take home our beautiful trophies. AED/CPR Training on March 25 Huge Su ccess! NVTA Member AED Training What a turnout from our membership! Not only did the NVTA Board members and PBI Pros receive training on our new AED (automatic external defibrillator) and "hands only CPR", but 50 NVTA members availed themselves of the opportunity to learn how to save a life too! Pam Dodson, RN from the Queen of the Valley Heart Project, conducted the training along with Board member Pam Bellefeuille, RN. The AED is visible from the deck in the courtyard with a beautiful cabinet to protect it from the elements constructed by member Mark Stuart and installed by Board member John Swenson! Teamwork! The NVTA Board is so proud that our tennis family is now better protected with the

new AED, and so many trained members! Pam B is also happy to teach you how to work the AED and learn the "hands only" CPR technique any time you see her at the courts! It takes just 5 minutes to learn this life saving skill! See you on the courts! Sonoma Wine Country Games...And Last Year' s winner??...board member Pam Bellefeuille

Quick Tennis Links NVTA Website Court Scheduler USTA Norcal SNMWTL - Sonoma, Napa, Marin League ATP Tour WTA Tour Napa Parks and Rec Isriz Balase, NVTA Head Pro Captain Bob Walsh Reports: USTA News Men The NVTA 65 & Older 3.0 league is cruising along. The age range of the teams is 66 to 91. Bob Walsh and David Roust are neck and neck with 2 wins each. We have four matches left, two of which are rainouts and will be played in May. Member Coaches Napa HS Tennis Team to a 13-0 Season NVTA member Rob Farver and the Napa High School boys tennis team were featured in an April 8 Napa Register article by Andy Wilcox. As the article noted, without any home courts for practice or play, the Napa team has racked up a 13-0 record in Monticello Empire League play. When Rob came aboard as head coach in August, he said that he'd coach if needed but he would rather have been an advocate for fixing Napa High's courts, which are unplayable and will have to be replaced. The team uses Napa Valley College courts for matches but has to coordinate with Justin- Sienna, for whom the college courts have served as a home facility for years. Fortunately, Silverado Resort and Spa and NVTA have filled in the gap for the homeless team. Rob and his son Jack, who plays on the team, and all the other Napa players are working for an undefeated season - even without any home courts. Great job, Rob! Hello! Dear NVTA Family, Izzy' s Insights I am writing to inform you that I will be leaving my position as Tennis Director on April 29 th. I will be going home to Illinois to assist my parents in any way possible as they head into retirement. But I do look forward to the po ssibility of returning in the future. Zack Miskel, whom many of you have met, will be taking on the role as your new Tennis Director. I am confident that his teaching and leadership capabilities will continue to improve your games, as

well as serve the tennis community in Napa. I would like to thank everyone for their support and open arms as I assumed this role back in September. And I am sure you will do the same for Zack as he transitions in. The tennis program at NVTA would not exist without your contributions and participation. So thank YOU for being such an awesome and lively tennis community! I will cherish the many friendships and memories I have made along the way. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have worked with you. I wish you, NVTA, PBI, and Zack all the best moving forward. Again, I value each and every one of you in my personal growth and life. I look forward to hearing about how your game has improved, personal life updates, and about NVTA's continued progress. I would love to hear from you via at isriz.balase@gmail.com, or cell phone: (847) Thank you all again for everything. It has been a pleasure working with you. Sincerely, Isriz Balase Col l ege Invitational Coming at Sil verado Dear NVTA Members, We are proud to announce a partnership with Silverado Resort and Spa in expanding the 6th Annual College Invitational, September This year the field will expand to 8 top Division I men's teams and half of the matches will be played at NVTA. Teams have included Oklahoma State University, University of Hawaii, Pepperdine, Arkansas, University of Pacific and The University of San Francisco to name a few. The 4 day event will comprise of some of the best tennis teams coming to compete in head to head matches here in Napa and NVTA members will have a chance to play in a Pro-AM event and have dinner with the players. The most important part is this tournament is an opportunity to fundraise for various tennis causes in The Napa Valley. This year we have decided to allocate our sponsorship funds to the Napa and Vintage High School Tennis Teams. We will be asking for your assistance in forming a tournament committee at NVTA. We will need to raise money through sponsorships, find accommodations for coaches and players, create a special event for local high school players, and provide lunch for players over the course of the 4 day event. Who will join us in making this a wonderful event at NVTA? If you would like to be on the tournament committee please reach out to Quinn Saine at quinn.saine@pbitennis.com for more information. Meetings will commence in February. If you can't be on the committee, but would still like to help, we will be reaching back out with other ways you can be of service to this great community event.
