Opening Remarks Presentation of GCTA Annual Awards Promotion of Tennis Rich Brown Special Recognition Jeff Tytus Umpire of the Year Jim D Innocenzo Columbus Recreation & Parks Award Megan Stoll Media Scott Gerber Female Players of the Year, Margo Mansfield Award Ashley Thai & Lauren Thai Male Players of the Year Stu Little & Billy Weldon Presentation of Men s League Awards Presentation of Women s League Awards Closing Remarks September 22 nd Martin Janus Senior Center Columbus, OH

GCTA Award Promotion of Tennis Rich Brown Perhaps this year this award should be named the Promotion of Tennis and Service Award. Rich Brown seems to believe that the two are closely related. Not only has Rich created a social tennis league in Dublin providing the opportunity for 250+ players to meet new people and play good tennis, but also he has helped to raise over $100,000 for pediatric cancer research and treatment and Habitat for Humanity via tennis events and league organization. In Rich s words, As a 40+ year cancer survivor, Habitat for Humanity leader, and avid tennis player and promoter, the ability to create tennis leagues, lessons and clinics, events / fundraisers that both bring more people to the game and result in great relationships built around tennis, I am very proud and happy to also see the impact tennis can have in community service. The tennis community is populated with great people filled with energy and motivation to live full and active lives. Service and tennis is such a natural! Congratulations Rich! 2011 Awards Ceremony

GCTA Award Special Recognition Jeff Tytus This year s recipient of the Special Recognition Award began playing tennis at age 10 in For the past 35 years, Jeff Tytus has been a member of the Greater Columbus Tennis Association. As captain of his Northam Park 4.0 team for 27 years, Jeff deserves special recognition and commendation for his continuing support of tennis at Northam Park. Summer months will find Jeff playing at Northam Park with a group he calls the tennis crazies. Even though at this point Jeff doesn t put himself in many matches, he faithfully holds down the commitment of organizing the matches for his team each week and is there on match day to support his players. According to team members, Jeff is everything a captain should be and is an inspiration to his team. Jeff has become the face of Northam Park tennis. As he heads into his 28th year of being captain, Jeff remains a vital part of the greater Columbus tennis community. Congratulations Jeff!

GCTA Award Umpire of the Year Jim D Inncenzo Having played tennis for many years, Jim D Inncenzo knows what it is like to be in tough, competitive matches. Jim has long been a top ranked tennis player in central Ohio and the Midwest Section. His wicked lefty spin has driven opponents crazy in tournaments match after match. Recently, Jim became a certified tennis official and immediately became an absolute expert on the application of the rules to playing situations. His calm demeanor while officiating helps keep the players and coaches from letting the pressure of the match take them over the edge. Jim is routinely assigned to what is anticipated to be a difficult match. He has justified the assignment by calling a great match and keeping the players within the rules. All one has to do is watch Jim in action to appreciate his abilities as an umpire - it s not an easy task. He is called upon to officiate at the junior, adult and college level based upon his demonstrated competence. Congratulations to Jim D Inncenzo, the GCTA s Umpire of the Year, Awards Ceremony

GCTA Award Columbus Recreation & Parks Megan Stoll Megan Stoll has been selected by the Columbus tennis staff as the recipient of the Recreation and Parks Award for Megan Stoll has been a valuable addition to the Columbus Recreation and Parks summer teaching staff. Her dedication to the teaching of tennis has engineered young players to continue learning the game through-out the year. Her enthusiasm for the sport and for teaching can be seen on the faces of her students and parents as they arrive for their weekly lessons. Players become excited to be on the courts even during the hottest part of the day. Parents have praised her and have expressed their hope in her continuing to teach for Columbus Recreation and Parks for many summers. Megan has established great rapport with her fellow instructors. Her ideas and suggestions have guided the program to new levels. We are pleased to present Megan Stoll as the Columbus Recreation and Parks GCTA Award winner.

GCTA Media Award Scott Gerber In presenting the 2011 GCTA Media Award to Scott Gerber, the GCTA recognizes the contribution that Scott makes to the high school tennis programs and individuals in the central Ohio area. Gerber Analytics is a website that focuses on two topics: high school academic results for all Ohio high schools and central Ohio high school tennis information. Over 83 leagues and 800+ high schools are included in the analysis. Looking for how a particular local tennis team is doing? Go to GerberAnalytics.com, and click on the link entitled, Central Ohio High School Tennis. You will find a daily update on interesting matches and results. Gerber Analytics clearly leads the way in reporting on tennis in this area. Love of tennis runs deep in the Gerber family. Son, Kyle, plays tennis at Case Western University, and, daughter, Lauren, play on the Columbus School for Girls tennis team. The Gerbers also have supported local tennis-related charities. Last year, Lauren, and Scott promoted the March of Dimes tournament at Elysium, the Easter Seals tournament at Olympic Indoor, and, the Diaz PanCAN tournament. Congratulations to Scott and Gerber Analytics for serving the Greater Columbus tennis community using 21st Century skills! 2011 Awards Ceremony

GCTA Award Margo Mansfield Award Female Players of the Year Ashley & Lauren Thai Tennis is a tradition in the Thai family. With fathers, uncles and cousins who play tennis, there was always someone around to hit with Ashley and Lauren. Beginning at young ages both girls took Lauren & Ashley Thai clinics and lessons at area clubs and began playing on teams and in tournaments. The Thai name became familiar, not only here in the Columbus area, but also at the Midwest level where the both girls are currently ranked in the top 25 players. Even though Hilliard Bradley moved up from Division II where the cousins won the Girls State Doubles Championship in 2010 to the Division I competition level, according to a local newspaper, the cousins will be marked players this season. Congratulations Ashley and Lauren!

GCTA Award Male Players of the Year Billy Weldon & Stu Little We know for certain that the 2012 Division I Boys State Doubles champions will not be Weldon/Little. The only reason this can be said with certainty is that Bill Weldon is now playing at Butler University, not Upper Arlington. History dictates that if they play... they win. This duo has dominated the Ohio Boys State championships for the past two years, winning the title in 2010 and The impact that the Little/Weldon combination had on the UA team was significant according to UA Varsity Tennis Coach, Amos Allison, Their overall intensity and work ethic motivated the rest of the team, Allison said. After practices, they didn t go home. They d stick around hitting or go to their private coaches or play pick-up matches. They had a goal in mind and worked hard to achieve it. Both young men have played in countless Midwest events and tournaments and are ranked in the top 50 players. As mentioned above, Billy has taken his talents to Butler University. We will be able to follow Stu this year as he returns to UA for the 2012 tennis season. Congratulations to both players! 2011 Awards Ceremony

In Memorium Carol Alexander August 28, September 6, 2011 The GCTA lost a dear and precious friend this month with the passing of Carol Alexander. Carol was a long-standing board member of the GCTA, twice serving as our president. She also served the USTA/Ohio Valley Tennis Association as an area representative for 25 years. She was a member of the Junior Competition Committee for the USTA/Midwest Section. As a certified USTA official, she umpired junior tournaments, wheelchair tournaments, Ohio State intercollegiate matches, and the Buckeye Boys Ranch professional tournament. She served as the tournament director for the GCTA s Area Qualifier and the USTA/Ohio Valley District Qualifier. Carol volunteered annually to help at the USTA s Member Appreciation Day at the ATP tournament in Cincinnati, her last commitment occurring just 2 1/2 weeks prior to her death. In 1980, in recognition of these efforts, both the USTA/Ohio Valley and the USTA/Midwest Section awarded Carol and her husband the Family of the Year awards. In 1984 she received the USTA/Ohio Valley Tennis Association s Lee Gillespie Award recognizing a nontournament player who has contributed to promoting tennis. In 2002 the GCTA presented Carol our Special Recognition Award for her many contributions to the sport she loved here in Columbus. Carol will be deeply missed by the GCTA and the entire Columbus tennis community Awards Ceremony
