2 From the Athletic Director Dear Wildcat Fans and B-CU Media: As I traveled around the country this summer, Wildcat fans point with pride to our banner year of as the Great Championship Year. Our program achieved so much this past year with MEAC championships and NCAA postseason appearances in football, men s basketball, softball and baseball along with a National Minority Golf Title in men s golf. Numerous individual awards were heaped on our coaches and student-athletes in a well deserving manner, and as we turn the pages on that phenomenal year, we look ahead with pride and hope will be a year of Great Expectations with our fans clamoring for repeat performances. However, this year the assignment will be to create the magic with a new set of characters. Head coaching changes in volleyball, tennis, baseball and men s basketball present new challenges but we would prefer to look at them as new opportunities. So as this new season unfolds be prepared for a journey of success where new Wildcat legends will emerge to create a new era in BCU athletics. Get ready...get set...let s Go Wildcats! 5 Bethune-Cookman University Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is a private, four-year, fully accredited, historically black college founded in 1904 by internationally acclaimed Mary McLeod Bethune. The United Methodist Church-related institution has long been respected for its character-building environment, its provision of access to higher education for minority students, and its effectiveness in educating the whole individual by developing the head, the heart, and the hand. Faculty, staff, alumni, and students live by the University s motto, Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve. The University is home to an ethnically diverse student body of over 3,600 students from most states, the Caribbean Islands, and more than 35 countries. Bethune-Cookman has grown from a small school for girls to an internationally respected, coeducational university where students and faculty of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds enrich campus life. This diversity is also reflected in the tages and life experiences of students, who bring a broad range of talents and expectations. B-CU is proud of its historic mission to serve African-Americans. At the same time, the diverse and inclusive campus reflects an education that prepares leaders with respect for varied viewpoints, who reach across cultures and engage the wider world. In addition to its strong historical background, Bethune-Cookman University has emerged as a leader in academics, making the institution competitive with mainstream colleges throughout the nation. B-CU ranked by US News & World Report s 2009 America s Best Colleges edition as one of the top baccalaureate colleges in the south and one of the nation s top historically black colleges. Bethune- Cookman University was also named by the book Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers as one of the top 200 colleges nationally for creative students. The sixth largest of the 39-member UNCF colleges, B-CU is situated on 67-acre urban campus in the Atlantic coast city of Daytona Beach. A comprehensive, coeducational and residential institution, the University offers baccalaureate degrees in thirty-seven major areas that are included in six academic divisions: Business, Education, Humanities, Nursing, Science/ Mathematics and Social Sciences. Under the direction of President Trudie Kibbe Reed, the school achieved university status in 2007 with the launch of a master s degree program in Transformative Leadership. Bethune-Cookman prides itself on the quality of experiential learning provided for its students. A recent example is scientific research conducted collaboratively by the University s faculty and students that has resulted in the discovery of an enzyme in the human body that may lead to better treatments for diseases such as Parkinson s, Alzheimer s, and Atherosclerosis. The prestigious scientific journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology International has published these research findings. The university has made new achievements and received academic honors recently, receiving at grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to fund an extensive faculty development program focusing on excellence in teaching and learning practices, pedagogy, and technology related to the Freshman College program; awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2008 to purchase equipment for the university s Robotics and Embedded Systems Research Laboratory; and also named to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric wildcat Lady wildcat Wildcat volleyball 55 volleyball Lady

6 reaching funding goals on projects redesigning the current weight room facility and the construction of the Athletic Training Center for the football program. Both construction projects are slated to break ground in Administration s (NOAA) Environment Cooperative Science Center (ECSC) consortium in Other indicators of B-CU s successes are its growing enrollment; its increasing support from alumni; its consecutive appointments to the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges; accreditation of its Nursing Division by the National League for Nursing; the pending accreditation by the American Association of Certified Schools of Business; accreditation of its Hospitality Management program; and continuous accreditation, most recently with commendation, by the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). In recent years B-CU has also made strides with consistent campus expansion, including the construction of a $6 million, state-of-the-art teaching facility for the Business program; a 200-bed men s residential hall; and a 2,500-seat performng arts conference center; the completion of the Center for Civic Engagement (which includes the President s Banquet Room, graduate seminar room, Wildcat Center student lounge and fitness center, in addition to housing the university bookstore and athletic department), have greatly enhanced the college s net worth and provided for classroom expansion as well as enhanced campus life. One of the strongest indicators of the solid foundation that has supported an ambitious advancement function is B-CU s ongoing Capital Campaign. To build a stronger foundation for the future of Bethune-Cookman University, the Board of Trustees launched the Centennial Campaign, a multi-year effort to fund the University s annual operation, immediate facility needs and growth in the permanent endowment. The campaign will include several new academic buildings and new student activity facilities. There are also numerous naming opportunities within the new Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center and the new wing of the Robinson Music Building. It is also important to find friends who wish to create new endowed funds for scholarships, positions or programs. For the details about the Centennial Campaign, contact the Development office at Bethune-Cookman University. For athletics, B-CU has also made a commitment to improvement of facilities, recently replacing the playing floor in Richard V. Moore Gymnasium, and 66 bethune-cookman bethune-cookman

7 Daytona Beach, Florida Daytona was founded in 1870 by Matthias Day, from whom it takes its name and incorporated as a city in 1876, but was not known as Daytona Beach until 1926 with the merging of towns. Since then, the city has grown to just under 65,000 in population, with over 200,000 in the suburban areas bordering Daytona Beach. In addition to the residents, the city also hosts more than 8.3 million visitors per year. This appeal makes the city of Daytona Beach an outstanding location for the Wildcats to call home. Daytona Beach has a little bit of something for everyone; the activity of a city, but the feel and appeal of a small town. Located on the east central coast of Florida, Daytona Beach remains one of Florida s top tourist destinations. Although it s known as the World s Most Famous Beach, there is much more to the city and the area to offer an endless supply of activities. Whether in the ocean or nearby rivers, residents and tourists can often be found fishing, sailing, surfing, or just soaking up some sun in the daytime. Others who find nature more interesting can travel only a few miles to the 362,000- acre Ocala National Forest or the 836-acre Tomoka State Park, where one can find alligators living in the marshlands, ospreys nesting in the tops of the cypress trees, or live oak trees (Timber from these trees was used to build ships in the 19th century), with branches 70 feet long along the Tomoka River. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, and split in two by the Halifax River, conditions in Daytona Beach remain nice throughout the year, with very mild winters and warm summers. The yearly average temperature is 70.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, water temperatures range from the low 60s in winter and early spring to high 70s and low 80s from late spring through late fall. Culturally, the city has much to offer visitors and residents with a thriving arts and music scene. Daytona Beach is home to a Museum of Arts and Sciences (which houses a planetarium, the Southeast Museum of Photography, Art League of Daytona Beach, Haunted Daytona tours, the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet, and the Tomoka Basin GeoPark. Historical points of interest include the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, the Casements (winter home of John D. Rockefeller), the Bulow Plantation Ruins, the venerable Fairchild Oak, the Halifax Historical Museum, and the Wright Flyer monument at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In addition to those attractions Daytona Beach has a lively and flourishing nightlife that attracts visitors from all across the nation for spring break, Black College Reunion (BCR), and motorcyclist events including Biketoberfest and Bike Week. Daytona Beach is home to many sporting attractions including the Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Cubs AA Baseball club, the LPGA International golf course. All of the sights, sounds, and activities make a great home for the diverse student body of Bethune-Cookman University; Wildcats can be seen regularly around the town and on the beach taking in all that Daytona Beach has to offer. wildcat Lady wildcat Wildcat volleyball 77 volleyball Lady

15 2011 Lady Wildcat Outlook DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Like any new coach, Isaac Raphael has a long range vision for success for his Bethune-Cookman University volleyball program. And like any other coach, Raphael wouldn t mind if his timeline gets accelerated. He prefers to win; just like any other coach. I want to the win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference THIS year, Raphael said. I think we have a chance to upset some teams. We re not very far away. But in the next two years, my goal has us taking the MEAC Championship and going on to the NCAA tournament, Raphael said. Do we have the players to do that now? I m not sure but I know we have some talent. I like the players we have now, but I m also going to go out and find the players we need to get to the next level. Raphael inherits a team that finished 7-27 last season and was picked to finish fourth in the MEAC s six-team Southern Division. There s the fine line between optimism and reality the first-year head coach knows he has to take. You have to keep everything in perspective, said Raphael, a former FIU assistant. I have to look at the present players and make them the best players they can be. We also have to change the culture to get the players to work at a higher level. I love winning, but if we can make improvements, that will be progress. At FIU, we played B-CU last year and I liked what I saw as far as talent goes, Raphael said. Sizewise, B-CU was smaller than I d like, but the talent is there. We have been willing to win and do what it takes to be successful. If we take care of that, then we ll be successful. Two seniors will lead the Lady Cats in 2011, middle blocker Linda Nwabuko and setter Frances Rodriguez. Nwabuko registered 172 kills, fifth best on the team, while Rodriguez platooned with freshman Alexis Bliese. Head Coach Isaac Raphael begins his first season at the helm of the Lady Wildcats Nwabuko will benefit from the tutelage of assistant coach Kisya Killingsworth-Putney, the former Florida All-American and product of Pine Ridge HS; Miss Florida Volleyball in 2003, who went on to become an All-American at Florida. Sophomore Kat Agson is expect to contribute along with Nwabuko in the middle. The middle is Kisya s specialty, Raphael said. She will help develop them to where they can be. If we can get the middles to be good blocking middles and get them involved in the offense, that will open the gates for the outside hitters to be more effective. The outside hitters will be paced by Krysta Gardner, whose 228 kills were second-highest on the team last year. The junior is 5-8, but her wildcat Lady wildcat Wildcat volleyball volleyball Lady

16 jumping ability fans at Florida A&M even called her a female Vince Carter - makes her an even more valuable threat. Krysta has some great talent, Raphael said. She was underutilized in the past and I m going do best to get her in one-on-one situations this season. Her hitting percentage was low but it will be in a team isn t strong in the middle. I think we can get her hitting in the 300s. Bliese, who posted 777 assists in her freshman season, may once again split time setting with Rodriguez as Raphael tries to get the most of both players. Both are coachable, Raphael said of Alexis and Frances. I d like to have bigger setters so they can block the middle and outside hitters, so we might have to run a 6-2 offense. I need setters who can play defense a setter should be your second best defender. The key position on defense, the libero, will be filled by sophomore Jennifer Jimenez with assistance from newcomers. Frances Rodriguez is one of two seniors that will bring veteran leadership Coach Isaac Raphael s young team I like the libero to be athletic, Raphael said. Speed and aggressiveness is what we need on the court. B-CU began practice August 8 for its season opener, August 26, against Maryland- Eastern Shore in the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament hosted by Hampton University. The Lady Wildcats will participate in three other tournaments, including its own the weekend of September 16-17, before jumping into conference play September 30 at South Carolina State. Before the Lady Wildcats take on the 2011 schedule, they will showcase their talents at Moore Gym for the freshly returned students and fans of the program. B-CU will hold its Maroon and Gold match, an intra-squad full scrimmage, at 1:30 p.m. on August 21st. It s an exciting time, Raphael said. I can t wait to get out there and compete. Aliexis Bliese led the Lady Wildcats in assists in 2010 and will once again platoon with Frances Rodrigues at setter bethune-cookman bethune-cookman
