2 Dear volleyball friends, The 2017 edition of the CEV Volleyball European Championships, Europe s flagship competition for national teams, is just about to get underway with a number of firstround qualifiers. Some of Europe s up-and-coming teams will be testing their skills on the international stage and vie for a much coveted ticket to the second step of the qualification process where they will be meeting some of the big guns in men s and women s Volleyball. This is only the first stage of a long journey that will eventually take us to Poland and Azerbaijan / Georgia, the countries that next year will be hosting the Final Round of the competition for men and women, respectively. The upcoming tournaments will be an opportunity for all participating teams to show how much they have progressed and turn into results the hard work players and their coaching staff have been doing in order to become more competitive and stand a chance of making it to the Finals of the European Championships. I would like to thank the local organisers and the respective National Federations for their readiness to host these first-round qualifiers and for all the work they have been doing in the run-up to their home events. 3 Dear volleyball friends Welcome to Norway, and to Western Norway, Bergen and the island of Sotra in particular - a diamond among many pearls along the Norwegian coastline. It is a great honour for the Norwegian Volleyball Federation to be hosting the European Championship Qualification. Being one of the smaller nations in Europe, this is a rare occasion for us, but also a very much welcomed one. On behalf of the Norwegian volleyball family I want to extend my gratitude to the people and volleyball enthusiasts of Bergen and Sotra, especially Sotra and Nyborg volleyball clubs, who have made this possible. A special thanks to the municipality of Fjell for their efforts to meet the needs and requirements of international volleyball in the most flexible way. Volleyball used to be a very big sport in Norway in the 1980 s, probably top five in terms of number of players. We then experienced a drop in interest for our sport during the 90 s, but now we are growing again, and count about players altogether. Since the 90 s we have also grown to be a leading European beach volleyball nation, with many outstanding athletes in both genders throughout the years. I believe our men s indoor team is the strongest we have had in a couple of decades, and I can not wait to see them play against great nations like Israel, Hungary and England. I believe we are in for a fantastic week end with good sports, good volleyball talks and hopefully good friendships and great sportsmanship. I look forward to seeing you all in Bergen and Sotra.
