TEAM SPORTCONX: The Rainbow Warriors dropped a four-set exhibition match to Team SportConX, a professional squad made up of All-Americans and professional players, Monday, at the Stan Sheriff Center. Among UH s 14 players who saw action in the match was newcomer Stijn van Tilburg, a freshman opposite, who tied for team-high kill honors with nine along with senior Sinisa Zarkovic. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native hit.412 in just two sets and had three digs and one block. Zarkovic also played only two sets and hit.333 along with one ace and two digs. Outside hitter Kupono Fey had seven kills and six digs while middle blockers Hendrik Mol (7) and Iain McKellar (5) combined for 12 kills. Mol also added team-highs of nine digs, two aces, and five blocks. Setter Jennings Franciskovic dished out 25 assists in three sets played. As a team, the Warriors served up eight aces with only 11 errors and out-blocked SportConX 6.5 to 6.0. SportConX, made up of former All-Americans and current professional players, was led by Stanford alum Curt Toppel s 13 kills on.462 hitting. Former Iolani School and Stanford graduate Brad Lawson added 12 kills at a.385 clip while former UH middle blocker Maulia LaBarre had nine kills and a team-high four blocks. CAMPING IN MAUI: UH spent four days of training camp in Maui at Seabury Hall in Makawao, holding practices, an intrasquad scrimmage, and youth clinic. The team also awoke early one morning to watch the sunrise atop Haleakala. The trip was a homecoming of sorts for freshman Colton Cowell, a Maui native and graduate of King Kekaulike High School, where he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League Player of the Year. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN HONORS FOR TRIO: Three Rainbow Warriors were chosen to the 2016 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-America teams which were selected by a nationwide voting committee. UH, along with two-time defending NCAA champions Loyola, and BYU each had a nation-best three players earn preseason All-America honors. Senior outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic and senior libero Kolby Kanetake were picked to the 10-member first team while junior setter Jennings Franciskovic was named to the 11-member second team. All three were AVCA honorable mention All-Americans a season ago. Zarkovic, who sat out a chunk of the season while nursing an injury, averaged 3.20 kills per set and posted double-figure kill totals in 15 matches. Kanetake posted the program s third-highest dig total in the rally-scoring era with 297 digs last season and finished fifth nationally with a 2.91 per set average. Franciskovic was a second-team all-mountain Pacific Sports Federation pick who ranked sixth nationally with assists per set in his first season as the team s starter. UH PICKED 7TH IN AVCA; 6TH IN MPSF: Just one season removed from a 24-win season and appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years, UH was picked No. 7 in the preseason 2016 AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the preseason Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coaches Poll. In the AVCA poll, BYU was voted No. 1 followed by UC Irvine, Loyola-Chicago, Long Beach State, UCLA, Ohio State, UH, Lewis, UC Santa Barbara, and Penn State. Rounding out the Top 15 were Pepperdine, Southern California, Stanford, and Ball State and George Mason (t-15th). BYU was also No. 1 in the MPSF poll followed by UC Irvine, UCLA, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, UH, Pepperdine, Stanford, USC, CSUN, Cal Baptist, and UC San Diego. Last season, UH finished runner-up in the highly competitive MPSF and ascended to the No. 1 national ranking during the season for the first time in a decade. UH finished the season ranked No. 6 in the final AVCA poll. REPRESENTING THE USA: Junior outside hitter Kupono Fey and setter Jennings Franciskovic had quite a summer, touring with the United States Junior National Team to a pair of international tournament. Fey and Franciskovic helped Team USA claim silver at the 2015 U21 Pan American Cup in Canada and an 11th place finish at the U21 World Championships in Tijuana, Mexico. The duo spent nearly two weeks training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. before making the trek up to host nation Canada for the Pan Am Cup, where they lost to Brazil in the gold-medal match. After a few weeks off, the pair returned to U.S. MJNT action, at the FIVB World Championship in Mexico but landed in the toughest opening pool, dropping three-straight matches to Russia, Argentina, and Poland. Team USA rallied in the consolation pool to take 11th, its same finish as SKY WALKER RETURNS: Former Rainbow Warrior and AVCA All-American Joshua Walker returns to the Rainbow Warriors volleyball program as assistant coach in Walker spent the past four years playing professional volleyball in Europe. During his career at UH from , Walker served as one of the team s consistent leaders in kills at outside hitter. He finished his four-year career with 1,428 kills (3.91 K/S) and currently ranks fifth in program history. Walker was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second team in 2011 and made the All-MPSF third team as well as second team AVCA All-America in After graduating from UH in 2011, Walker carried his volleyball career overseas to Greece, Denmark, Finland, and the United Arab Emirates. In he was an All-Star in the Finland Volleyball League, and also earned honors during his time spent in Denmark in THE BEST IN THE NATION: Hawai i regained the title as national attendance leader in 2015 after averaging 3,671 fans per home match, the program s highest average since 2006 (4,231). UH drew a season-high crowd of 7,296 on Senior Night against Stanford (April 11) for the best home singlematch crowd since BYU led the nation in attendance from Previously, UH led the nation for 17 straight seasons from Rainbow Warrior Volleyball Weekly Release 2 HawaiiAthletics.com
3 HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE 7th season Alma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991 In six seasons as head coach of the University of Hawai i, Charlie Wade has led the Rainbow Warriors to one NCAA Tournament and four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament appearances. Last season, UH had one of its best seasons in school history, finishing with a 24-7 mark - the most wins since and reaching as high as No. 1 in the nation - a first since The Rainbow Warriors received an at-large bid to the NCAA Play-In Match, their first national appearance since In 2014, Wade guided the Warriors to a mark and a record in the MPSF, which surprisingly was not enough to qualify for the postseason tournament. The season included five wins over teams ranked in the top four nationally, including two-match sweeps of No. 3 UCLA and MPSF champion and No. 2 BYU and a win over NCAA semifinalist Penn State. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postseason in 2013 and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfinal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. Prior to Wade s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. In his inaugural year as coach, Wade led the Warriors to a mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since UH doubled its win total from the previous year and snapped a two-year postseason drought. UH averaged 3,415 fans per match, including a season-best 5,683 for the MPSF quarterfinal match against Pepperdine. YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD (AT HAWAI I) OVERALL MPSF Season W L Pct. W L Pct. Hawai i enters the 2016 season having won its last 11-straight matches in Honolulu. DIGGING FOR GOLD: Libero Kolby Kanetake helped build a solid foundation for UH s defense during the 2015 season and ultimately earned his first All-MPSF Second-Team honor and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention status, coming out of it as one of the country s top liberos. The Honolulu native finished second in the MPSF and fifth in the nation with 305 digs, averaging 2.88 D/S. His remarkable performance became one of the program s leading defensive specialists in single-season digs, tying for second with Alfred Reft (2006) in total digs across both rally-scoring and all-time records. In single-season dig average, Kanetake was third in rally-scoring and fifth all-time. He managed to pull off several huge saves for the Bows, tallying 17 matches with double-digit digs and nine with over 15. Kanetake became the program s first libero to earn an MPSF/Molten Player of the Week award (Feb. 23) after a career-high 21 digs against CSUN (Feb. 20) at the start of UH s 16-match winning streak. He was additionally named to Volleyball Magazine s 2015 Third-Team for the first time of his career. SET ABLAZE: In just his first season at starting setter in 2015, Jennings Franciskovic was named to the All-MPSF Second-Team and was recognized as an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention with 1,158 assists on the year, the most UH single-season assists since Nejc Zemlak s 2010 season (1,432). The Westlake Village, Calif., native finished second in the MPSF and sixth in the nation with a A/S average and reached for the MPSF s single-match high after dishing out a career-high 70 assists in the Bows series-finale win over Pepperdine (March 8) at the peak of UH s 16-match win streak. Franciskovic tallied six matches with 50 or more assists and additionally contributed 94 blocks (nine solo), 85 digs, and 59 kills. NATURAL BORN KILLER: Sinisa Zarkovic received his first AVCA All-American Honorable Mention nod and was an All-MPSF Second-Team pick after finishing the 2015 season with 291 kills, 133 digs and 56 blocks (nine solo). The outside hitter finished seventh in conference kills and 28th in the country despite sitting out five-straight matches due to minor injury. Zarkovic rounded off the season going four-straight matches with double-figure kills towards a total of 16 on the year. He additionally netted 20 kills twice this season, most recently in UH s thrilling five-set victory over Pepperdine (March 8). Zarkovic was named to the Outrigger Resorts Invitational All-Tournament team (Jan. 11) after finishing the tournament with 48 kills, including 20 on opening night against Ohio State (Jan. 8). Despite a devastating loss to Pepperdine (April 30) in the MPSF Semifinals, Zarkovic was named to the MPSF All-Tournament team after tallying 14 kills against the Waves. At the end of his junior season, he has already reached 907 career kills.
