The Spartans play at San Diego State on Thursday evening and at Fresno State Saturday afternoon. Both matches will have live stats, with only the Fresno State match being broadcast on the Mountain West Network. San José State begins the week with a 9-4 overall record and 1-1 mark in the Mountain West. The team started conference play with a 3-0 loss at Nevada last Tuesday, and needed five sets on Saturday to defeat Air Force 3-2. The Spartans are tied for fifth in the MW standings at 1-1 with New Mexico and Wyoming. 3 2017 San José State Volleyball ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: The Spartans received two honors at the Drake Invitational. Luiza Andrade was named the Tournament s Most Valuable Player, while Breann Robinson was named to the All-Tournament team. At the SCU/SJSU Tournament, Nandyala Gama was the only Spartan selected to the all-tournament team. GAMA BLOCKING UP THE CAREER LISTS: Nandyala Gama continues to climb up the San José State career blocking categories this past weekend. She moved up to seventh place on the career assists list with 283 block assists. She needs four to move into sixth and eight block assists for fifth place. Gama also jumped two spots in the San José State career total blocks list last week. She is now seventh in total blocks with 323 and needs just one block for sixth place and 34 to reach fifth. The old record was two hours and 50 minutes, in matches against Cal Poly in 1983 and versus Stanford in VIDO MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Redshirt sophomore transfer Fernanda Vido has made an immediate impact on the Spartan team after transferring from Eastern Washington. She currently leads the team with 177 kills, 3.47 ps, and is second on the team in digs with 113, 2.22 ps. In the 13 matches played this season, Vido has recorded double-doubles in five of them. She had a season-best 24 kills in the win at San Francisco. ANDRADE DIGGIN AND SERVIN THE BALL: Spartan libero Luiza Andrade leads the team with 218 digs, 4.27 ps, and is Mountain West leader in service aces with 20, 0.39 per set. For the three matches, she averaged 4.70 kills and 5.35 points ps. Gama led the Spartans in kills with 16 in wins over Cal State Fullerton and Howard. Against the Titans, she hit.519 with 16 kills on 27 attempts and only two errors. PARTS HITS OFF THE CHART: Redshirt freshman Laura Parts made an impact with her swing at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic. In three matches, she hit.479 with 26 kills on 48 swings and only three errors. Against Cal State Fullerton, she hit.733 with 11 kills on 15 attempts and no hitting errors. GÁVIO JOINS THE 29-KILL CLUB: Giulia Gávio 29 kills in the win over Pepperdine on August 25. With that, she is one of just three Spartans in school history to record 29 kills in a match. The other two are Carrie Nash (Oct. 39, 2004 vs. Boise State) and Joslynn Gallop, twice (Sept. 29, 2000 vs. Nevada & October 29, 1999 vs. Hawaii). 4 2017 San José State Volleyball GÁVIO RECEIVES MW HONOR: Giulia Gávio, from Rio de Janiero, Brazil, was named the Mountain West Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on August 28 after leading the team to a 2-0 record. She averaged 4.22 kills, 4.39 points and 3.00 digs in nine sets played and hit.278 for the two matches. She recorded a double-double against Pepperdine with 29 kills and 14 digs and hit.333 for the match. Her 29 kills are the second-highest total for a Mountain West hitter this season. Gávio added nine kills and 13 digs in the win at San Francisco. SPARTANS STARTED SEASON UNDEFEATED: For the second consecutive season, San José State started the season with an undefeated record. This year, the team defeated Pepperdine (3-2) and San Francisco (3-1). Last year, the team started the year 3-0 after the first weekend. UP NEXT: The Spartans return home to play the first home MW matches of the season. 10 2017 San José State Volleyball Text Goes Here The 2017 season marks the fourth year with Jolene Shepardson at the helm San José State University women s volleyball program. Shepardson spent the 2010 season as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. The Hokies played in their first NCAA Tournament match in school history that season and advanced to the second round to play eventual national champion Penn State. Two Virginia Tech players earned All-America honors (Felicia Willoughby and Cara Baarendse). Over the past three seasons, the Spartans have shown improvement during Shepardson s tenure. The team Jolene has recorded a winning non-conference record Shepardson each of the past two seasons and won the Head Coach Spartan Invitational in The Spartans upset Colorado State, 3-2, during the 2016 season to end the Rams 31 Mountain West match-winning streak. Prior to her time at Tech, Shepardson was an assistant coach at recruiting coordinator at American University in 2009, coached with Front Range Volleyball Club in Colorado from and was a volunteer assistant coach at Winthrop (2005) and at Regis University ( ). As a collegiate player at the University of South Florida, the former Jolene Patton helped the Bulls win two Conference USA Regular-Season Co-Championships (2000 and 2002) and make two NCAA Tournament appearances those seasons. The 2002 team advanced to the second round of the tournament, sweeping Florida State in the first round before losing to host Florida 3-1. In the classroom, the team has earned 12 Mountain Scholar Athlete accolades and 22 Academic All-Mountain West honors in three years. Jamie Hirai and Julie Sam have been honored as first team Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars in and Shepardson took over the program at Bakersfield in 2011 season and coached a 0-31 team in 2010 to an 8-18 record in her first year. The improved number of 10.5, determined by adding the difference in victories between the two seasons to the difference in losses and dividing by two, was the sixthbest improvement in the NCAA. The 2012 team continued the upward progression, finishing with a record in the team s final season as an NCAA Division I Independent. Her 2013 team ended the season with a overall record and 12-4 mark in the Western Athletic Conference, setting a school record for the most wins in a season. The team finished second in the WAC regular-season standings and advanced to the championship match of the WAC Tournament. Three Roadrunners earned first or second team All-WAC honors for their play, and four players received Academic All-WAC honors. Shepardson graduated from the University of South Florida in 2002 with a degree in psychology. She is a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified Personal Trainer. She and her husband, Aaron, have two daughters Mirabelle (5) and Marielle (2), and a son McCoy (3).
