2 MARENGO S SUSI BROUGHTON TO BE HONORED WITH OUTSTANDING OFFICIALS AWARD Each year, the Indiana High School Athle c Associa on honors an outstanding official in each sport during the State Finals Tournament. Susi Broughton, of Marengo, is the recipient of the IHSAA Outstanding Volleyball Official Award in the state of Indiana. A licensed volleyball official for 42 years, Broughton is an ac ve member of the Southwestern Indiana Officials Associa on where she has assisted with the SWIOA Hospitality / Sportsmanship Golf Scramble, which awards scholarships to student-athletes who exemplify sportsmanship, for the past 13 years. In addi on to volleyball, she is also a licensed so ball official. Broughton has the noteworthy dis nc on of playing in the very first IHSAA Volleyball State Finals in 1972 for Springs Valley High School. She has worked 17 Sec onals, 10 Regionals, four (4) Semi-States and three (3) State Finals matches during her career. Susi has also officiated Church volleyball leagues over the past 40 years, and her favorite part of being an official is the opportunity to teach student-athletes the correct way to play and enjoy volleyball Susi was selected for this honor by a commi ee represen ng the official s associa ons. In Indiana there are 24 associa ons made up of more than 6,000 men and women who give up much of their personal me to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile, and healthy ac vi es for the studentathletes in our state. Statewide, there are more than 6,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports. Susi is a 1973 graduate of Springs Valley High School. She and her husband O s have been married for 43 years and have two children Tanya Roser (42) and Cory Broughton (39). Knights are seeking second volleyball state championship (2010 1A). Have finished as state runner-up in last two visits to the state finals. Central Catholic has won 20 consecu ve sets to this point including 15 straight during state tournament ac on. Senior Sami Royer rates among the state leaders with 944 assists (9.3 per set). Team avenged regular season loss to #2 Barr-Reeve with a 3-2 victory last Saturday for the semi-state championship. Hauser claimed the Mid-Hoosier Conference championship this season with a 6-0 record. Claimed eighth consecu ve sec onal championship on Oct. 14 with a 3-0 victory over South Decatur. 5 CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES ANDREAN FIGHTING 59ERS (29-8) IndianaPrepVolleyball.com Poll: #5 Fi h-ranked Andrean compe ng in its first volleyball state finals this Saturday. Niners bounced three-ranked teams during the state tournament including #2 Alexandria 3-0 last Saturday for their first semi-state crown. According to MaxPreps.com, senior Chris na Dal Santo ranks fi h in state with 118 service aces (1.1 per set) and 10th with 651 digs (5.9 per set). Iden cal twin sister Jenna Dal Santo is among the state leaders with.399 hi ng percentage and 544 kills (4.9 per set). Junior Serena Wagner rates 15th in state with 1,022 assists (9.2 per set). Team also defeated two other ranked squads this tournament - def. #6 Hammond Bishop Noll 3-1 in the sec onal semifinals on Oct. 14 and #10 Boone Grove 3-0 on Oct. 21 to repeat as regional champions. The win over Noll avenged a regular season loss back on Aug. 19. Fell in five sets to Class 4A state finalist Crown Point in the season opener for both schools on Aug. 14. Claimed the Northwest Crossroads Conference championship this season with a 9-1 record. Andrean returned five starters from last year s 32-6 regional tle team. According to MaxPreps.com sta s cs, senior Alli Stumler leads the state with 731 kills (6.5 per set) and ranks fi h with a.478 hi ng percentage. Head coach Wes Briscoe is in his first year as CAI coach a er four years as assistant to previous coach Walter Pauly. Had also been North Harrison coach for eight years prior to arriving at Chris an Academy. Formerly known as Graceland Chris an, the school changed its name to Chris an Academy of Indiana for school year. 6 CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES NEW CASTLE TROJANS (33-6) IndianaPrepVolleyball.com Poll: #1 Top-ranked New Castle making its fourth appearance in volleyball state finals and first since A state championship season. School seeking second volleyball crown and fourth overall. According to MaxPreps.com, sophomore Melani Shaffmaster ranks 10th in the state with a.432 hi ng percentage and also rates among the state leaders with 443 kills (3.9 per set) and 928 assists (8.2 per set). Freshman sister Mabrey Shaffmaster also ranks among the state leaders at.364, 426 kills (3.8 per set) and 98 service aces (0.9 per set). Senior Merissa Hanning is also among the state leaders with 115 total blocks (1.0 per set) as is freshman Bailey Cox with 642 digs (5.7 per set). Defeated five Top 10 teams in its six state tournament matches including three in the loaded Delta Sec onal - def. #10 Muncie Burris 3-0, #4 Wapahani 3-2 and #2 Delta 3-0. Followed with 3-1 wins over #3 Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger in the regional semifinal and #6 Mishawaka Marian in the semi-state. Trojans won the Hoosier Heritage Conference tle this season with a 7-0 record. Team returned three starters from last year s 27-9 squad. New Castle fell to Class 4A state finalist Avon 2-0 on Sept. 23. Junior Reagan Hopp is 11th in the state with 538 kills (4.8 per set). Classmate Taila Trabue rates 13th with 105 service aces (0.9 per set) and is also among the top 50 with 406 kills (3.4 per set). Sophomore Abbey Richman is among the state leaders with 514 digs (4.8 per set). Upset two ranked teams in last two ou ngs - defea ng #9 Northview 3-2 for the regional crown on Oct. 21 and #7 Silver Creek 3-1 for the semi-state tle last Saturday. The victory over Silver Creek also avenged a 3-1 loss in the regular season finale on Oct. 7. Five starters returned from last year s squad. Braves finished second in Circle City Conference with 3-1 record. 7 CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES CROWN POINT BULLDOGS (35-3) IndianaPrepVolleyball.com Poll: #4 Crown Point returns to the 4A state championship match - its second appearance - a er se ling for a runner-up finish a year ago. Bulldogs returned five starters from last season s 36-4 state runner-up team. School looking for its second state championship in just under five months as the Bulldogs so ball team won the 4A crown back on June 10 with a 2-1 victory over - Avon. Team has won 24 straight matches. Last loss was a 2-0 decision at Avon on Sept. 2. Bulldogs entered last year s championship match on 28-match winning streak. Senior Morgan Chacon ranks 22nd in the state with 474 kills (4.6 per set) and 24th with a.380 hi ng percentage according to MaxPreps.com stats. Classmate Alex Equihua is 5th in state with 1,090 assists (9.6 per set). Peyton Yelich, another senior teammate, ranks among the state s leaders with 125 total blocks (99 blocks solo, 1.1 per set). Bulldogs defeated Class 2A state finalist Andrean 3-2 in season opener for both schools back on Aug. 14. CP defeated two top 10 teams in last two matches. Defeated #10 Michigan City 3-2 for the regional tle and upset #1 Yorktown 3-1 for the semi-state crown last Saturday. Team finished a perfect 14-0 (double round-robin) this season to claim the Duneland Athle c Conference tle.
