Coach s Corner How Do Football Coaches Spend Their Free Weekend? by Coach Patrick Etherton 00 Each season, the Millikin football schedule has a bye week, meaning no game on Saturday to keep the Big Blue coaching staff busy. Here s how the staff will spend their free weekend. During the bye week, our coaching staff concentrates on correcting the mistakes our players made in previous games and starts to focus on upcoming opponents. We will break down the upcoming opponent s film and make sure that we are ready for the grind of the final eight weeks of the season. The coaching staff will continue to ensure that our athletes are doing well in their academic studies. We ll also spend quality time on recruiting, making sure that we continue our efforts to bring quality studentathletes to Millikin. As a staff, we strive to identify all the top recruits in our recruiting database and make sure all their information is up to date. The weekend of our bye week, we will travel throughout Illinois and Missouri to Coach Patrick Etherton watch high school football games. Our entire staff will be busy attending several different games on Friday night in the Chicago, Decatur and St. Louis areas. On Saturday, we will have one coach in St. Louis watching three high school football games and the rest of the staff will be attending Aurora University to watch our upcoming opponent play. On Sunday of our bye week, we have a junior varsity game at home versus Rose-Hulman. Then on Monday, we re back into a regular game week schedule. So much for that free weekend! Athletics to Collect Food for Community Food Drive Home events in bold. As a part of Millikin University s efforts in the 11th Annual WSOY Community Food Drive, Big Blue athletics will be collecting non-perishable food items at the Sept. 22 football game and the Sept. 29 men s and women s soccer games. On Sept. 22, the food collection took place prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff, when the undefeated Millikin Big Blue beat Aurora University at Frank M. Lindsay Field. Collection areas were located at both entrances on the south end of the field and at the tailgate area entrance off Oakland Avenue. Millikin students, faculty and staff who donated food items were entered in the Big Blue Golden Ticket program. All other fans that brought donations were entered into a halftime drawing that allowed them to enjoy the second half of the game with Millikin President Dr. Harold Jeffcoat in the President s box. The Sept. 29 collection will take place at the entrance to the Millikin Soccer Fields located behind the Decatur Indoor Sports Center. The women s game vs. Augustana begins at noon, with the men s game starting at 2:30 p.m. Fans donating a food item at the soccer games will be entered to win a signed soccer ball from both the men s and women s teams. Millikin students, faculty and staff who donate food items will be entered in the Big Blue Golden Ticket program. The 11th Annual WSOY Community Food Drive will be on Oct. 5 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kroger on Rte. 36 east in Decatur. 4 An Unexpected Gift In 2005, the Big Blue women s basketball team took home the NCAA Division III National Championship at the Final Four tournament held at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, Va. During the tournament, Joanna Conner 06 was named Most Outstanding Player and was presented with the net from the championship game. This August, Conner, now the assistant women s basketball coach at Millikin, had the opportunity to travel with the volleyball team to their first tournament of the year, the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational. Returning to Virginia Beach brought back a flood of memories for Conner. It was pretty sweet. I never thought I would ever go back there, so seeing the venue and the court that I played on again was unbelievable, Conner says. On the first day of the tournament, Virginia Wesleyan s athletic director, Joanne Renn, introduced herself to head volleyball coach Debra Kiick and Conner. Kiick explained how Conner had previously won the basketball national championship and most outstanding player award on that same court. Renn recalled these games clearly, as she had been working in the athletic department at the time and was instrumental in securing the bids to have the games played on the Virginia Wesleyan courts. Conner recalled a special moment that happened later that day. I was watching one of the games, and I heard Renn say my name. She presented me with something she d had for seven years: the game ball from the 2005 tournament. Conner had used that same ball to put up 14 points and 15 rebounds during the tournament, and she was elated to have it back in her hands. She was proud to share this special moment with the volleyball team. The [volleyball] girls were so supportive and so excited about me receiving the basketball, said Conner. Currently, Conner keeps the ball on her desk, but she will soon relocate it to a Big Blue trophy case, where it will rest alongside the net and trophy from that special day seven years ago. by Brennan Garcia 14 Joanna Conner 06 breezes past an opponent.
