1 A comprehensive guide to more than 350 ways to get FIT and get ACTIVE in Queens COMMUNITY DISTRICT 11
2 Queens on the Move: A comprehensive guide to more than 350 ways to get FIT and get ACTIVE in Queens. Prepared By: Stephanie Brooks, Dietetic Intern, Queens College (CUNY) February 2015
3 About this Guide Queens on the Move is a comprehensive guide on free / low cost ways to be physically active in the borough of Queens. According to the NYC Community Health Survey 2013, 25.1% of Queens residents did not participate in any physical activities or exercises in the past 30 days 1. The American Heart Association recommends that adults get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, 5 times per week, for overall cardiovascular health 2. This guide, with more than 350 ways to get active in the borough, can help make it a little bit easier for Queens residents to reach that goal, and can help identify parts of the borough that are lacking in physical fitness opportunities. Queens on the Move is organized by Community District. Each section includes a listing of the neighborhoods included in the Community District, a small map of the district, and an alphabetical listing of the physical fitness activities identified. Some larger parks, like Flushing Meadows Corona, appear in multiple sections because they are accessible to residents in multiple districts. There is also a Google Map containing all sites referenced in this guide. Refer to the key at the bottom of each page to see what features are offered at each site. Some sites require a fee or membership as indicated by $. Residents that have an IDNYC card can receive discounts, including a 10% discount off annual NYC s Recreation Center Membership for adults age 25-61, a 10% discount on NYC s Department tennis permits, and a 20% discount off family memberships at YMCA centers. Visit for more information. And, many health insurance plans offer discounts or reimbursements for buying a gym membership. Be sure to check your health insurance plan! 1.
