Context of the Project: Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2 C10) Competitive National Application and Selection Process ARC with Parsons Brinckerhoff and No-Match Grant ($700K) Over 50 Applications Received Nationwide: 2 MPOs Selected: Atlanta (Regional DTA) San Francisco & Seattle joint application (Transit DTA) 2 DOTs Selected: Ohio DOT and Maryland DOT Data Sources: GDOT, SRTA, INRIX TMC (Traffic Message Channel data), HERE, NAVSTREETS, Aerial Imagery, Google & Bing Maps, LCIs & CTPs, Regional Counties & Cities Simulation-Based Dynamic Traffic Assignment: DynusT
Regional Dynamic Traffic Assignment: Mesoscopic Analysis Source: USDOT
Single-Occupant Vehicles 2015 Origin-Destination Desire Lines
All GDOT Stations, October 2014 Traffic Flow: Speed & Density Relationship
2015 DTA Network A finer grained network, based on 2015 NAVSTREETS, but modified as needed 94,000 nodes & 205,000 links (3x current ABM network) Covers what is in the current 2015 ABM network including all collectors, arterials, expressways & interstates based on the recent GDOT functional classification update Some local roads are included if on the edge of zone or a fourlane facility Signalized intersections are identified by the nodes in the DTA network
Unsignalized Intersections Includes locations with stop signs and yield signs as well as uncontrolled intersections Not collected due to lack of base data Intersections with stops were synthesized for DTA based on densities, area types and facility types
Signalized Intersections Types of signals not included for DTA: Red or red/yellow blinker lights (same as stop/yield) Railroad crossing lights School zone lights Trail or pedestrian/hawk signals (included in ARC inventory) Emergency signals (included in ARC inventory) Types of signals used for DTA: Ramp meter signals Pre-timed and actuated signals
Ramp Meter Signals 178 ramp meter signal locations The number of operation by period by time of day is used by DTA
2015 ARC Signalized Intersections 5,400 total locations in the 20 county ARC modeling region Represents what was operational as of August % are on a state route, a temporary state route, or along ramps leading to or from state routes & interstates/expressways 75% are in the core 5 counties: Fulton 1,550 DeKalb 800 Cobb 750 Gwinnett 700 Clayton 250 City of Atlanta 1,000
2015 ARC Signalized Intersections
Traffic Operations Programs Signal timing programs that synchronize traffic lights in cooperation between GDOT as well as select cities, counties, and CIDs Includes Regional, Midtown and Perimeter: RTOP MTOP PTOP 1,116 signals 96 signals 83 signals Data from synchro files for RTOP signalized intersections will be included in DTA
2015 ARC Signalized Intersections Traffic Operations Programs RTOP green MTOP purple PTOP - orange
DynusT Supported Signal Types from SYNCHRO Signal Types (Protected/Permissive) Actuated (fully actuated and Uncoordinated) Max Green Min Green Amber Pre-timed Uncoordinated (fixed offset) Offset (0) Actual Green Amber Pre-timed Coordinated(variable offset) Offset Actual Green Amber
Prohibited Turns For DTA, prohibited turns are noted by nodes (FROM, AT, TO) as it relates to the DTA network Includes no left turns, no right turns and no movement straight ahead Mostly on streets with a divider, especially near expressways, and with some in town and in certain county seats
Next Steps for TCC members ArcGIS Online check of regional signal inventory & DTA network: For DTA & ARC inventory, location and ownership of pre-timed and actuated signals (August 2015 & since) For ARC inventory, location and ownership of trail signals, pedestrian/hawk signals and emergency signals (August 2015 & since) 2015 DTA network link attributes such as street name, number of lanes, and speed limits
