1 Boston Mycological Club Founded in 1895 North America s Oldest Mushroom Club Walk Schedule 2013 Schedule of Walks: Walks before Labor Day will be held at 10:30, and after Labor Day, 1:30 on Sundays (mostly). Exceptions will be noted below. Walks and ID Meetings. At the walks participants collect, and then sort out their collections for identification at the site. "Informal" ID sessions will be held at the walk, with "official" ID sessions held at Farlow the following Monday. This is the timeline for a mushroom walk: Walk time gathering, introductions, site information, send off. 1 ½ hours later Meet back and organize collections, with very quick table talk. Bring your own picnic lunch or afternoon snack. 2 hours after start of walk, the ID session will begin, with books, a serious walk through, any microscopes people bring, etc. Some walks will not have a formal ID session; we will use ID books and keys in a workshop session to hone our ID skills. Come for the whole thing, just the walk, or just the identification! Advice: Directions are given from major highways; there may be a more convenient route for you. There could be misprints or landmark changes. Check a map for unfamiliar locations. Dog walking is banned or controlled in many areas. Please check with the walk leader before you bring your dog. Bring lunch, a basket, a knife, and wax paper or paper bags for collecting. Take precautions against ticks and Lyme disease: wear white clothes, a hat, long sleeves, and pants tucked into boots. Use insect repellent. Check the weather and dress appropriately. Walks will be held in the rain in most cases. If you bring children to the walks, please supervise their collecting. Site directions are usually left at the meeting place for latecomers. It is possible to get lost at some sites, a whistle can help. Study the site map and walk with others. Neither the BMC nor the walk host can assume responsibility for loss, injury, or damage to persons or property. Identification: Try to identify the collected mushrooms; you ll learn much more that way. The ID Committee can confirm your identification. You may also bring specimens to walks for identification and discussion if you distinguish them from fungi collected at the walk site. Monday evening ID sessions are an excellent opportunity for members to show and talk about their most exciting mushroom finds of the week with other BMC members in a relaxed and friendly setting. Feel free to bring specimens from Sunday s foray or specimens that you ve found on your own. There are books to help you identify and learn more about your collection as well as dissecting microscopes and compound microscopes to examine your finds under magnification. If you have no experience with either then no worries! There will be an experienced member to help you learn techniques and interpret what you observe. Experienced members can help you navigate through the mycological literature and help you learn to use guidebooks and keys to identification. Among many interesting materials, the BMC library also has a great Polypore Kit of actual specimens to compare yours with. Monday night ID sessions are held at the Harvard Herbarium Seminar room at 22 Divinity Ave in Cambridge from 7pm to 9pm. The herbarium building is located at 22 Divinity Avenue in Cambridge. As you walk down Divinity Ave., you are facing the herbarium building. Divinity Ave. intersects with Kirkland St. We recommend that you look for a parking meter on the street (no need to pay after 6pm), park in one of the garages in Harvard Square or take public transportation. Please refer to How to Park at Harvard on the BMC website. ID Committee: George Davis (Chairperson), Jeanne Peterson, Jason Karakehian, and Nicki Croghan. Cancellation Due to Drought: During extreme drought conditions, please check the Club website (bostonmycologicalclub.org) for cancellations. The cancellation procedure is as follows: 1. By 10:00 AM the day before the walk, the walk host, in consultation with the President, will make the decision to cancel a walk if collecting looks fruitless. The President has the option of notifying ID committee members scheduled for that walk and will post the cancellation on the Club website. By 12:00 noon the day before the walk, the information should be posted. If no notice appears, the walk is on. 2. For people who show up for the walk, the leader will be at the scheduled meeting place for a limited time to tell them that the walk has been canceled.

2 3. No ID will take place at the walk site of a cancelled walk. Sunday, July 14, 10:30 AM Collecting Area: Memorial Forest, Sudbury.
