Roadrunner Activities and News October 2013 edition Hello fellow Roadrunners, TURKEY TROT: The preparations for our walk are on the way. We ve finished all the preplanning and have put in our orders for what we need from our suppliers. Currently we are still looking for some volunteers for certain positions, i.e.: Coffee & Cake, Brotchen prep., Soup, Trail check, Trail supply, Control Points, Trail Mark & Cleanup and Parking. Also we need some muscle for set up on the afternoon of the 27 th and for the tear down and cleanup. Please come to the next General membership meeting to sign up! Of course you can also contact me via or phone. If you d like to advertise our walk, please stop by and pick up some Werbers they are available at my office (Hertz car rental, Am Köhlwäldchen 7, Ramstein, between the McDonalds and highway A6) for pick up. OTHER: We also added more information at the end of the newsletter, for better planning purpose. For information on upcoming walks, please check our Facebook page, I post the walks weekly: If anyone would like to become more involved with the club itself, please contact me at Ramsteinroadrunners@yahoo.com or info@massey-gmbh.de. You could start as an assistant officer or director, and see how the position is. Patrick
END OF AN ERA - WEEKLY STARS AND STRIPES VOLKSMARCH COLUMN: As most of you already know, the weekly volksmarch column in the Stars and Stripes has been ended as of 1 October. The decision was made to end the contract and therefore cut the American Volksport community off from an easily accessible source of walk information. This information is still available, just a little more difficult to find. In the future, this information can still be found in a number of locations both in print and on-line. For the on-line set, go to the Roadrunner web page/volkssport Links and you will find the web links for the German walking events. The plan is to add the links for Luxembourg and France also for your convenience and trip planning. You can also look at our current newsletter for the near term events (4-6 weeks out). For those who still rely on the printed page, the information can be found in the Herald Union (Wiesbaden) and the Kaiserslautern American courtesy of the efforts of Don Seltzer who produces the local volksmarch column. Also, there are printed schedule books for both Germany and International that can be purchased from the Abzeichenwart at any walk. The 2014 Germany edition just came out and we expect the 2014 International in early December. I would like to personally thank the many people that have helped all us walkers through their efforts over the last 20+ years to keep us informed on what was happening in the world of volkssporting - not just the schedules but the side stories and personal touches that they added to the basic data. It was always refreshing to look at the Thursday paper to see what interesting tidbits were there to help us pick out an interesting an exciting walk(s) for that weekend. Older walkers will remember Jennifer West who wrote the column in my early days of walking and Bob and Lorraine Huffaker who covered the last decade keeping us informed and interested. They became a part of the Roadrunner and walking families through their service and dedication to all the community. We are truly sorry to lose the column and it's information/notes from Bob and Lorraine on Thursdays, it brough us up to date on what our community was doing each week and we looked forward to it. If you see Bob & Lorraine (Jennifer returned to the CONUS many years ago and we lost track) on the trail or at a volksmarch, take the time to thank them for all their help and hard work - they deserve the recognition for all their efforts over the years. Brad
We would like to acknowledge our new members: - Amanda Bradley and Terry Moseley - Michael and Vicki Welch - Dave and Ruthie Tubbs and Family - Steve Hankins - Maria Lock Welcome to the Ramstein Roadrunner family. If you have any questions about our club, volksmarching, or Germany in general, please don't hesitate to contact us. Last month we began offering our members, both new and renewing, the option to pay their membership dues via Electronic Bank Draft. If you have any questions on this option, please don t hesitate to ask. If you wish to use this option here are the details you will need: Transfer the funds to: Account Number: BLZ (routing number): (Kreissparkasse) Include your name in the info field. Send us an to let us know that you transferred funds. We are continuing our membership data update effort. Again, your assistance is greatly appreciated. If you have any other membership questions, contact us at ramsteinroadrunners@yahoo.com. Save the date On Dec 21 we will go to Luxembourg City for their Christmas Market walk. Depart Ramstein at 0830, return around Details coming soon. For info and reservations contact Gene Behrends: parrotdad@hotmail.com; (home) (cell)
We've had a beautiful summer, and we're heading into a fabulous fall with crisp air, fall colors, and the need for warmer clothes during walks! Check out our wonderful fleece jackets and hoodies to keep you warm during the gorgeous fall walks! Our heavy duty fleece jackets come in sizes S-4XL; the price is only 37 euro or $50! We also have a limited supply of hoodies...a bargain at 24 euro or $36! In addition, we have a great variety of t-shirts, polos, and hats! If interested, please our sales director, Laura Ryan at fireweed39@yahoo.com, or join us at our next membership meeting on 17 Sep 2013 at 6 pm where Laura will have merchandise on hand for you to check out. Come join us on a walk or the next membership meeting and enjoy the joy of volksmarching! The club is planning on having the club flag at the following walks: Kindsbach October Please stop by and say Hi, it's always nice to see our members and get to know you better. This is also a good way to get your volksmarching questions answered. Car Pool Suggestions: The club is looking for some destination suggestions for car pools for the next few months. Your input on where you might like to go and walk as a group is valued. Send your suggestions to the Roadrunner site (Attn. Car Pools) and we will work out a plan.
Here s how you decode the listings - you ll find the event name (i.e. Morbach) followed by the state or the country the walk is in (RP, Saar, etc) and the trail lengths if they have been published in the terminelist. Check on the web site in the Master Distance Listing Dec 09 for how far approximately the walk is from Ramstein. You still need to check the weekly walking column in the Stars & Stripes, the walk brochures and the official listing on the DVV web site but this will give you a start. We will also suggest some nice mini-trips for folks who are more adventuresome. The officers have done a number of these over the years and can provide information if you need it. Always remember to take your passport AND International driver s license if you are traveling to a walk outside the boundaries of Germany. You never know when the customs officials will enforce the borders and the fines can be steep. At best, the hassle may cost you several hours and much frustration.
