2 Newsletter IN CASE OF EMERGENCY (I.C.E.) CARD Group members will be sent a blank ICE card with the printed programme. It is a good idea to carry your card while out on a group walk, in case anything should happen. For more details see page 11 THANK YOU TO OUR WALK LEADERS A warm welcome to our new leaders Roger: Sue and Gary MEMBERS It is with great sadness we report the deaths of Jennifer and of Jim. NEW FOREST WALKING FESTIVAL The 2018 Festival runs from Saturday 13th to Sunday 28th October inclusive. The festival is a good "shop window" for new people to come along and sample our walks, we've gained quite a few regular walkers from previous years' Festivals. All we need to do is put on our regular walks in the New Forest area. WALKS FOR THE NEXT PROGRAMME Unfortunately several of our regular leaders are unable to offer walks for this programme, so we've done well to get so close to filling the programme. However, more volunteers to lead walks would be most welcome URGENT NEWS We've introduced a new system for e mailing members with urgent news. Many members have been receiving these e mails, but if you aren't on the list yet and you'd like to be on the circulation please give your latest e mail address to Chris ( news@newforestramblers.org.uk ) If the leader does need to make a change after the programme has been printed, PLEASE inform Chris straight away so he can send out the urgent e mails and update the web site. Our web site is the first place to look for the latest news, we also use e mails system for really urgent news such as changes of walk start point or cancellations. SOCIAL MAILING LIST Kathy has a separate e mail list of those interested in going on walking breaks. These breaks get booked up very rapidly once announced, bookings are on a first come first served basis. If you want to be included on the circulation please contact Kathy (social@newforestramblers.org.uk) SOCIAL EVENTS AND SPECIAL WALKS Thanks to Kathy and her team for organising the Hampton Court coach trip. We can look forward to Olwen's Garden Walk at the end of June: Graham's Sundae walk in July: the Sausage Sizzle and Sue's pub walk in August : Mary and Jed's quiz night in November. Please see pages 12/13 for details of all the other social events including the booking form. FOOTPATH ANOMALIES There are some public rights of way that are supposed to go diagonally across a field yet the well worn footpath goes round the edge of a field, or vice versa. These are examples of a footpath "anomalies". We are collecting a list of these anomalies with the intention of getting them sorted out. It's worth adding that this doesn't apply to open access land, such Page 2

3 as a good deal of the New Forest, where there is a right of access to the whole area rather than limited to specific "right of way" paths. If you find any anomalies please inform Mike ( footpaths@newforestramblers.org.uk ). Happy rambling from all of the committee RAMBLERS' NEW FOREST GROUP PROGRAMME - JUNE 2018 Sat 30 10:00 Janet & Chris SU BRAMBLE HILL WALK CP Sat 30 10:00 Sat 30 13:30 Olwen Nicky & Mike E 119 SU SU DUNDRIDGE - The Hampshire Bowman pub SO32 1GD Garden walk - please book by 26 June - see below OAKLEY CP GARDEN WALK 30 June DUNDRIDGE 5 mile circular walk from The Hampshire Bowman pub Links in with Swanmore Open Gardens Scheme, 1pm 6pm. 11 IN CASE OF EMERGENCY (I.C.E.) CARD Purpose of the In Case Of Emergency (I.C.E Card) It s good practice for all group members to carry one of these cards while out on a group walk, in case anything should happen. Walkers with medical concerns can raise them discreetly and confidentially with the leader. It is important to emphasis that the I.C.E. Card is the personal and private decision of the individual walker. Using The I.C.E. Card In Case of Emergency Cards allow walkers to fill in their Emergency Contact Details and Important Medical Information. Walkers should keep the I.C.E. cards in an accessible place e.g. a top rucksack pocket that is easily accessible in an emergency, but secure; so that if something should happen on a walk, the walk leader or emergency services know about any medical conditions and who to contact. On the front of the card there are places to record your personal details and any relevant medical information. On the reverse is space for two (2) emergency contacts and details on how to contact the emergency services. It s best to use a ballpoint pen to fill in the I.C.E card the ink is permanent on the card and will not smudge. Data Protection The information given on this card should be completed and held only by the individual walker whose card it is. It is only to be used for accessing medical information or contacting individuals in an emergency situation. This data will not be collected or used for any other purpose. Page 11
