3 3 Preventing Heat Stroke Summer s warm weather makes it the ideal season for outdoor sports and activities. However, it is important to take precautions against overheating, which could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Following are some tips to help you stay safe this summer. Drink water. Becoming dehydrated is the biggest danger of heat stroke. Drink plenty of liquids throughout the day to stay hydrated and allow your body to regulate its temperature. Wear light colors. Light-colored clothing absorbs less heat from the sun, and therefore can keep you much cooler than wearing dark shirts or pants. Look for signals. Pay attention to how you re feeling. If you begin to feel dizzy or nauseated, find shade or go indoors to cool off. Once you re in a cooler environment, sit down and drink cool water. Headaches, nausea and fatigue are all symptoms of heat exhaustion, which is a precursor to heat stroke. What s Cooking Summer has arrived! 5 6 Talk About It Let the Games Begin This month, much of the world will be watching as athletes go for the gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Use the following questions to discuss the international sporting event. What are your favorite sports to watch during the Summer Games? More than 200 nations participate. Do you cheer for the U.S. or another favorite country? Who are your all-time favorite Olympic athletes? Why do you admire them? What do you remember about them during competition? Have you or anyone you ve known trained for or competed in the Olympics? The U.S. has hosted the Olympics eight times. Did you ever attend the games when they were here? Interesting Apple Facts By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. I hope you find the following apple information interesting and informative. Eating an apple can brighten your smile. Apples are a source of antioxidants, which can fight cancer. Researchers believe that eating apples on a regular basis may limit the development of Alzheimer s disease and Parkinson s disease. One apple has only 50 calories, 2 grams of fiber and no fat. The apple blossom is the state flower of Michigan and Arkansas. Apples can be kept for up to two weeks in a refrigerator (outside of any packaging). Exercise Class Daily at 10:30 am The state of Michigan grows more than 20 different kinds of apples. Last year, Michigan farmers sold more than 20 million bushels of apples. Here are a few: Paula Red, McIntosh, Jonathan, Empire, Idared, Rome and Honeycrisp. Fresh apples are available at all American House locations. No Excuse Not to Exercise American House offers a wide variety of exercise programs. Join us Monday- Sunday at 10:30 am to take advantage of these great programs! Some seniors may think that staying sedentary conserves their energy and keeps them safe, but nothing could be further from the truth. Research shows that inactivity contributes to chronic health problems, and keeping muscles toned can help prevent falls. Other seniors may worry that they re too old to start exercising, but better fitness can begin at any age. Walking and other light activities can deliver big benefits. Diminished mobility is no reason to shun exercise, either. Many exercises, such as lifting light weights and stretching, can be performed in a chair or bed. Check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

6 7 Summer Fun at American House The patio is always a great place to gather! Parties on the patio, bonfires on a warm summer evening or just to gather for lemonade and laughter with friends. Car Show Car Show The First American Automobile Race At 8:55 a.m. on Nov. 28, 1895, six motocycles left Chicago s Jackson Park for a 54-mile race to Evanston, Ill., and back through the snow. No. 5, piloted by inventor J. Frank Duryea, won the race in just over 10 hours at an average speed of 7.3 miles per hour. He earned $2,000, while the enthusiast who named the horseless vehicles motocycles won $500. Only two years earlier, Duryea and his brother Charles had built what they claimed to be the first American gasoline-powered automobile. Yet, as if by spontaneous combustion, more than 70 entries were filed for the Times-Herald race, a response so overwhelming that President Cleveland asked the War Department to oversee the event. Of course, history shows several American forerunners to the Duryeas winning vehicle. As early as 1826, for example, Samuel Morey filed a patent, bearing the signatures of John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay, for an internal-combustion engine. Remember Me? Much like its scenic beaches and hula dancers, Don Ho was an iconic symbol of Hawaii. Here are a few high notes in the life of the island singer. He was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Honolulu. In 1960, he took over his family s lounge, named Honey s, where he formed a band and began performing. Tourists enjoyed his baritone voice, easygoing style and repertoire of songs, jokes and stories of Hawaiian culture. After recording several albums, Ho s biggest hit came in 1966 with the breezy ballad Tiny Bubbles, which became his trademark song. His other popular standards included Pearly Shells and I ll Remember You. The entertainer earned the nickname the ambassador of aloha and was a regular guest on TV variety shows.
