An Mhaigh Tír na nóg G.A.C. Notes (week commencing 15/06/09) 2009 Summer Camp An Mhaigh G.A.C. will be hosting a 2009 Club Tyrone/VHI Summer GAA Camp on the week of July 13 th 16 th. This camp will be open to children from the Moy and surrounding areas, provided they are already registered with a GAA club. The fee this year will be 25 per child. Summer camp application forms and details have been circulated to all primary schools in the County. Application forms can also be downloaded from the Tyrone GAA website (click under County Board section). Parents are urged to register their children as soon as possible. Any child who is not registered by the close of the school year will not be able to participate in next month s summer camp. Meanwhile, any coaches wishing to work at the 2009 football and hurling summer camps should note there will be a training day in the Dean Maguire, Carrickmore this Saturday (20 th June) starting at 10am. It is essential that all coaches wishing to be considered for summer camp coaching attend this day. All coaches are required to bring a photocopy of the following certificates if they haven't already sent them to the Tyrone GAA offices on the day: Access NI; Child Protection; and Foundation/Level One Coaching. Irish Classes Basic Irish language classes will continue at An Mhaigh G.A.C. Clubrooms each Wednesday evening from 7.00pm to 8.30pm. This beginners course has been attracting an increasing number of people and will continue for the next four Wednesday nights, finishing on July 8th. The classes are open to all club members who can join the course at any time and have a bit of craic while learning our native language. For further information, please contact our club s cultural officer Marty Kernan on USFC: Tyrone v Derry Members are reminded that the Tyrone v Derry Ulster Senior Football Championship semi-final match at Casement Park this Sunday (21st June) is NOT an all-ticket event. The Stand will be ticketed but admission to all other parts of the stadium will be by payment at the turnstiles on the day. Children aged under sixteen will be admitted free of charge. Good luck to Colm, Philip, Ryan, Sean and the entire Tyrone senior squad and management as they strive to reach another provincial decider. Senior ACL Division 1 Ard Bó 0-15 An Mhaigh 0-5 An Mhaigh senior footballers slipped to their third consecutive league defeat, last Sunday evening, as Ardboe proved too strong at the loughshore. Moy were severely hampered by the unavailability of our four county stars and a number of other players, but did at least produce a battling display for the most part. Moy s vastly understrength side started well and were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the first quarter. However, it was Ardboe who finished the half strongest to lead 0-6 to 0-3 at the interval. Heavy rain, mixed with incessant thunder and lightning, was a feature of the second half. Ardboe adapted best to the conditions and ran out comfortable winners. Final Score: Ard Bó 0-15 An Mhaigh 0-5.

Team & Scorers: Nathan Brady; Brendan Kelly, Colm Jordan, Adam Currie; Francie McQuade, Niall Kelly, Mark Jordan; Tommy McNicholl (captain) and Niall Conlon; Martin Conroy (0-1), Anthony Rafferty, Ryan Mallon (0-2, 1 free); Ryan O Neill, Tommy Conlon (0-2, 1 free), Ciaran Conroy. League Position: Played 8, Won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 3, Points 7. Remaining Fixtures: v Killyclogher (home) on Sunday 28 th June; v Loughmacrory (away) on Sunday 5 th July; v Trillick (away) on Friday 10 th July; v Carrickmore (home) on Sunday 9 th August; v Kildress (away) on Sunday 30 th August; v Omagh (home) on Sunday 6 th September; v Aghyaran (home) on Sunday 13 th September. Reserve ACL Division 1 Ard Bó 5-13 An Mhaigh 1-6 A makeshift Moy reserve team fell to another heavy defeat, last Sunday, when succumbing to the powerful challenge presented by home side Ardboe. The loughshore club s greater strength in depth was very much in evidence as they swept aside an unsettled Moy outfit which included a number of new players to first division football. Ardboe were rampant in a one-sided first half and built up an unassailable lead by the break. However, to Moy s credit, the players dusted themselves down for the second half and provided much greater resistance. The Tír na nógs were outscored 1-4 to 2-6 during the final thirty minutes and will hope to be in a much stronger position when the teams meet in the championship later this week. Team & Scorers: Talal Jomar; Dirar Jomar, Gary Jordan, Adrian O Neill; Colm Quinn, Philip McQuade, James Kavanagh; James Devlin and Aaron Donaghy; Martin Kernan, Conall Laverty (0-4, 4 frees), Francie McKeown; Aidan Coleman (1-1, 1 pen, 1 free), Peter McKearney, Paddy McKeown (0-1, 1 free). Moy s next reserve game is away to Ardboe in the first round of the Division One Championship this Thursday evening (18 th June) at 7.30pm. Under 18 League An Mhaigh 0-13 Ard Bó 2-10 An Mhaigh minor team s season came to an end at Pairc Thír na nóg last Friday night, when losing to Ardboe by three points in their final Grade Two league game. This result meant the Sky Blues, who were short a few key players for this match, narrowly missed out on qualification for the knock-out stages of the competition. In a very free-flowing encounter that produced some excellent passages of football, the Moy lads will reflect on a number of missed scoring opportunities that cost them a place in the quarter-finals. As well as kicking a total of thirteen wides, the home side also struck the crossbar and had two shots on goal saved by the Ardboe goalkeeper in the second half. An Mhaigh enjoyed no luck on the night with a penalty decision going against them late in the first half. That helped Ardboe turn a four point deficit into a one point lead at the break (1-4 to 0-6). The sides were then level with seven minutes of the match remaining but a second Ardboe goal, which had an element of good fortune to it, paved the way for an away victory on a scoreline of 2-10 to Team & Scorers: Nathan Brady; Jack Kelly, Jim Kelly, Adrian O Neill; Conor Kelly, Eunan Deeney, Daniel Beaddie; Ryan Mallon (0-4, 3 frees) and Aaron Donaghy; Ryan Nugent, Peter Mallon (0-7, 1 free), Stephen Beaddie (0-1); Shane McKeown (0-1), Matt Dynes, Mark Gribbin. Subs: Harry Loughran (55 mins) and Tiernan Donohue.

Final League Position: Played 7, Won 3, Drawn 1, Lost 3, Points 7. Despite the disappointment of not finishing in the top four and reaching the league quarter-finals, our minor players and management can still look back with some satisfaction on what was a good campaign in Grade Two. They competed well against some very tough opposition and many of these players will no doubt go on to make a big impression at senior level. Under 12 Go Games An Mhaigh Under 12 footballers played host to two Armagh clubs last week in preparation for the start of their Tyrone Go Games. Both our A and B teams recorded victories over St John s (Collegeland, Clonmore and Annaghmore) on Wednesday 10 th June and Maghery on Friday 12 th June. Players of note in both games were Rory Magee, Ryan Coleman, Eoghan Kelly, Mark Regan, Patrick Mackle and Tom Loughran. Meanwhile, on Monday evening past, Moy s Under 12 footballers welcomed the boys of Coalisland Fianna to Pairc Thír na nóg for round one of the Tyrone Go Games. Played in glorious weather conditions, both the A and B matches served up some great football and provided the large attendance with some terrific entertainment. Under 10 Blitz A total of nineteen young An Mhaigh players attended the Under 10 Go Games Blitz in Coalisland last Saturday morning, allowing our club to field two teams in this event. The Tír na nóg boys were in for a treat as they had been drawn against top clubs like Errigal Ciaran, Carrickmore and Kildress. The array of skills that was shown by both Moy teams was encouraging and the coaches were pleased with the commitment and effort of all their players. One of the games in particular, Carrickmore v Moy, was a joy to behold. The tackling and the blocking by both sides was great to see, leaving scoring opportunities at a premium. There were some great scores taken from out on the wings, fast free-flowing football and some wonderful passing movements. All three matches provided a good test for our lads and they will certainly have benefitted from the experience. The coaches would like to thank all the boys who gave their all for Moy and the parents who were there to provide support. Indeed, the coaches would like to welcome all parents to come and watch these blitzes. The next one is in Errigal Ciaran on Saturday 27 th June. An Mhaigh mentors and players would like to thank Coalisland for their hospitality and an enjoyable day all round. Training will take place on Saturday as normal, with players to be at pitch for 9.20am. Any parents who requires further information on Under 10 training and matches should contact Liam Lynch, Brendan Farmer or Gerry Fearon. Under 8 Blitz An Mhaigh youth team mentor Martin Magee gave the following account of Moy s participation in last Saturday s Under 8 Blitz in Clonduff, County Down: Summer weather and the month of June always arouse marvellous memories of the picturesque Mountains of Mourne and of course the excitement of the Under 8 s Clonduff tournament in God s Own County Down. How long the memories will remain of last year s victory when Captain Marvel Michael Conroy lifted the trophy aloft, higher than Slieve Donard herself. But a year is a long time in football and this year s tournament just wasn t to be as fruitful for the young boys from An Mhaigh Tír na nóg. The 20 strong squad were in good voice as they sang their way down the road. This high pitch followed them through the league stage as the Blues strolled into the knock out rounds.

The Tinkerman Adrian Jordan had the boys well drilled early on. Drumgath, Bryansford, Ballyholland, The Bridge and Clann Eireann provided tough opposition in the league stages. There were defeats to Bryansford and Ballyholland but the other teams in the group had no answer to the Cat-like goalkeeping skills of Padraig Watters, who will definitely have County star John Devine looking nervously over his shoulder. The wizardry of Mark Hagan was immense in the front line and this was in good company with the stamina of Jamie Coleman, the tenacity of a fearless Ryan Conroy, the mesmerising skills of the Boss s son Michael Jordan and the net busting goals from Daragh Gildernew. Adam Donaghy and his younger brother Steve stood tall in the middle of the field during the league stages. Steve topped the scoring stakes despite a disabling arm injury early on. Also on the mark were the skilful Pod Hamill who played with a smile on his face all day, the versatile Miceal Mackle and the highly strung Ciaran Campbell. Moy s defence was as solid as a rock early on too. Shane The Rock Mackle was sturdy in defence, the ever present Patrick Harvey was all over the place and Jack Laverty showed signs of things to come next year with some basketball like fielding. However it just wasn t to be for the Tyrone men. Down side Warrenpoint showed the Moy men the early exit door in the quarter final despite fine displays from Lucas, the international, the hardworking Mathew Johnston, the relentlessness of an ever improving Dara Fox and the je ne sais quoi of Aidan Fearon. Neither the chemistry of Jarlath Swail nor the red hair dye of the tireless Scott Donaghy, were enough to delay the long walk back to the bus. All said it was a gallant performance from the very young side who still showed their hunger on the journey home making light work of McDonalds happy-meals. Maybe next year! Moy Under 8 squad: Patrick Harvey, Shane Mackle, Michael Jordan, Steve Donaghy, Matthew Johnston, Lucas, Dara Gildernew, Jarlath Swail, Dara Fox, Aidan Fearon, Scott Donaghy, Mark Hagan, Jamie Coleman, Ryan Conroy, Padraig Watters, Adam Donaghy, Ciaran Campbell, Jack Laverty, Miceal Mackle and Padraig Hamill. Ladies Intermediate Championship An Mhaigh 2-13 Loch Mhic Ruairí 2-11 An Mhaigh ladies senior team advanced to the semi-finals of the Intermediate Championship by virtue of a dramatic two point victory over Loughmacrory at Dunmoyle, last Saturday night. This first round tie served up some wonderful entertainment and, with the sides deadlocked at the end of sixty minutes, it was Moy who eventually took the honours after two exciting periods of extra-time. The Tír na nóg girls looked to have done enough in normal time to record their first win of the season, when leading by three points with time almost up. Nina Murphy had scored the only goal of the game and that is what separated the teams up until the final few seconds when Loughmacroy were awarded a penalty. The spot-kick was duly converted to level the contest on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-9. Although An Mhaigh had victory snatched from them at that stage, the Sky Blues were not to be denied in extra-time. Two Maeve McKearney points and a goal from young Sophie Lavery in the first period gave their side a five point advantage. Despite another brave comeback by Loughmacrory in the second period, Moy showed great determination to hold out for a 2-13 to 2-11 win. Team: Eimear McKearney; Jade McGee, Colleen McCance, Michelle Gribbin; Frances Bigley, Patricia Conroy, Ashlene McCann; Alice Murphy and Sarah Rafferty; Leona Gallagher, Kelley Fay, Eimear Swail; Michelle Clancy, Nina Murphy, Maeve

McKearney. Subs used: Jenna Hagan, Sophie Lavery and Grace McCormack. Other subs: Ellie McCance, Mairead Mitchell and Katie Murren. An Mhaigh ladies will now play Cill Iseal in the Intermediate Championship Semi- Final at Galbally this Friday night (19 th June). Throw-in time will be 8.15pm. Girls Under 12 League An Mhaigh Under 12 girls played two games last week, both away fixtures to Carrickmore on Wednesday 10 June and Killeeshil on Saturday 13 June. The first of these games proved exceptionally tough with Carrickmore fielding a particularly strong team. The home side dominated from start to finish, running out comprehensive winners on the night. The game away to Killeeshil was a much more balanced affair with Moy establishing an early lead and playing some free-flowing controlled football. In a tight contest, the Moy girls managed to consolidate their half-time lead and run out winners on a scoreline of 3-5 to 1-4. Representing Moy were: Caoimhe Corr, Ciara O Hanlon, Caoimhe Magee, Shona Jordan, Alice Kelly, Anna McDonald, Lauren McCaffrey, Niamh Jones, Cara Corr, Caoilainn Doherty, Aileen Jones, Niamh Armstrong, Yasmin Fitzpatrick, Megan Davidson, Aoibheann Swail, Molly Young and Emer Currie. For more information on Under 12 girls training and fixtures, please contact either Martin O Hanlon or Patricia Conroy. 6 Club Calendar A list of upcoming training sessions and fixtures for each of our teams can be viewed by logging onto our club website: New Arrival Congratulations to our club member Kelly Grimley and husband Brendan who were blessed with the birth of their second child, a baby boy, last Saturday. The new arrival, named Ryan, is a little brother for James. We look forward to the young Grimley brothers playing for the Moy in the not too distant future! Fr. Darragh s Golden Jubilee Members of An Mhaigh Tír na nóg G.A.C. were among those who joined in the celebrations last Saturday evening to mark the momentous occasion of Fr. Vincent Darragh s fiftieth year in the priesthood. Some of our club s young male and female players, along with a number of youth team mentors, formed a guard of honour outside St John s Church while other club members participated in the special Golden Jubilee Mass and reception afterwards in Moy Parochial Hall. A presentation was also made to Fr Darragh on behalf of our club. Since becoming parish priest in Moy and Clonfeacle, Fr Darragh has taken a keen interest in the affairs of An Mhaigh G.A.C. and given our club great assistance at various times down through the years. He is one of our Honorary Vice-Presidents and has been a good friend and valued supporter of the GAA in this locality. We congratulate Fr Darragh on reaching this wonderful milestone and thank him most sincerely for the immense contribution he has made to our club and parish over many years. May God bless him and reward his good work. Colin Mackle (P.R.O.) Ceann Ban, Kilmore, Moy, Co. Tyrone Tel: *********
