3 Team Featured - SEA U11 Boys Barcelona The U11 Boys SEA Barcelona team is the first Sparta Academy team and is forging into new territory The boys and the coaches have put in a lot of work over the past year and the result is a high quality team, playing in the top flight of MCYSA. However, the style of play, commitment, competition level, sportsmanship and coaching structure is very different and takes some getting used to by all involved Style of Play: Team Possession, Passing and Moving are paramount. Eg: Barcelona FC Commitment: Players at this level are focused on becoming very good soccer players on a year round basis. Playing 5-6 times per week is not uncommon. Competition Level: Currently the team plays at MYSCA Flight 1, Leading the flight with 18 points, and will be evaluating MAPS as well as highly competitive level tournaments in the Spring season. Sportsmanship: Our players have been taught to have tremendous respect for the game, including all associated with the team, coaches, fans, officials, & opponents. Coaching Structure: The coaches and trainers have advanced licenses. What others say about us...the following are comments from an opposing coach: "...I have to tell you how incredibly impressed I am of your team. Your boys have obviously put in a good amount of work on their game and it truly shows. They were precise and calculated and a joy to watch. On top of all of that, they showed great sportsmanship." Every team faces challenges however, this team meets everything with teamwork, work ethic, and a competitive spirit. Their record currently, is The record of the team is nice and well earned, however, watching them play is most exciting. Before the start of every game, the players participate in the Academy Circle - before they start to play, the team gets an opportunity to inspire each other. Page 3
4 Sparta Soccer Club Training Q&A By Dennis Specht, SSC Director of Training Q: What is the mission of SSC Training? A: To provide S.S.C players and coaches, soccer education and skills training, which constantly and consistently raises the level of soccer quality for both our travel and town programs. Q: What training does SSC offer? A: We have recently increased our investments in training. Currently, the club provides the following training for our town program; PreK and Kindergarden training, Monday Night Footskills (First and Second Grade) for Division 6, and individual team sessions for third grade and higher. For our travel program we provide; Footskills training every Monday Night, Individual Team Training, and GK training. On Monday night, over 100+ players are out in Station Park improving by practicing footskills with professional trainers. Q: Why are Footskills important? A: Footskills the ability to control the ball, with your feet and/or body. Footskills are really the most fundamental building block for soccer players. Please take a look on Soccer training for kids. Q: This year for travel teams each team has a licensed trainer, and we had to pay to for it. Why? A: In recent years, teams and clubs that have invested in training have increased the rate of player development dramatically. We have experienced this first hand, and have implemented training to improve the quality of our program. We leverage professional trainers with advanced coaching levels to provide our players a great opportunity to learn the game rapidly with quality. Q: Do Goal Keepers need special training? A: Yes they do. Goalkeeping requires additive training. Specific skills such as catching, boxing, distribution etc. are all specific skills. However, in our younger age groups U8-U11, it is important to let all players play in the field. This is important so footskills are developed. So it s important not to label someone a goalie too early in his or her soccer development. Q: What can my child do to improve at soccer? A: Work on footskills in the backyard. Soccer Juggling How to juggle a soccer ball part one basics, participate in available training sessions, and play A LOT. Q: What does great soccer look like? A: Soccer is called the beautiful game. Games that leverage great skills, passing and moving are viewed as great soccer. Many believe Barcelona FC are the world s top team. barca 30 pass is a great example of great soccer. Q: Does watching soccer make a difference? A: Yes, we believe so, we recommend watching professional games, MLS, Premiership, La Liga, College etc. Watching good soccer provides lessons and inspiration. Page 4
5 Eagle Scout Project Builds new walkways at White Lake Fields Chris Neurohr, a senior at Sparta High School and a member of Troup 150, has built 3 handicapped accessible ramps at White Lake fields for his Eagle Scout project. Previously it was very difficult to navigate from the parking lot to the fields with pushchairs, prams and young children. Additionally when it rained, it created a muddy mess to walk through! There were many design changes along the way and a small battle with the rocks in Sussex County! but Chris prevailed. The SSC board would like to thank Chris for his hard work and dedication. These ramps are a real upgrade to the fields and will make it easier for everyone to enjoy our new facilities. We are ordering plaques and will have a small ceremony when they arrive that we hope you will all be able to attend. Page 5
6 Soccer Coaching SSC would like to thank all of our coaches for giving up their time to coach our teams. Below are some coaching quotes and a couple of drills to help you all as you work with your players to improve their soccer skills. Most importantly, remember to Play Hard, Play Fair & Have Fun. THE GOLDEN COACHING RULE AVOID THE 3 L'S LINES, LAPS, AND LECTURES How would it feel being the twelfth kid in a line. No laps. Train sport specific. The kids came to play soccer. Not to hear a lecture. Kids don t care how much you know, they only know how much you care Together Everyone Accomplishes More. I don t expect you to be the best player on the field, I just expect you to do YOUR best Professional Coaches measure success in Rings. College coaches measure success in Championships High School coaches measure success in Titles Youth coaches measure success in Smiles A mistake is not a mistake unless you repeat it Below are a couple of very popular drills that teach good passing and ball control Page 6
