On The Ball West Pymble Football Club Newsletter May 2014 Fair play and fun will bring success to our community football club From The President What a fabulous start to season 2014! Our Club held the inaugural TAGS or Team Allocation and Grading Sessions during February and March. Despite the pre-season challenges of wet weather the sessions were a fabulous success with all of our juniors enjoying the start of the football season. All sessions ran very smoothly and appeared to be enjoyed by all. A big thank you to Will Thom from West Pymble physio for running such professionally organised and well run sessions. Thanks also to our Football Subcommittee, our All Age Coordinators, our Grading Assessors and members of the Club who have delivered such a great outcome for the kids - a truly fantastic effort by all. The TAGS process is all about implementing the Club's focus on giving players the best opportunities possible to improve their football. Research conclusively shows that improvement is significantly more likely when a player is in a team with players at a similar level of football development. Our committee's objective is to provide all players in our Club with the maximum opportunity to improve their football. With this comes greater enjoyment from playing the game. I trust that you will see this plan in action and working in the 2014 season. Another fabulous initiative, which we have launched this year, is the Concept4 technical skills program on Monday nights. Gwynne Berry has coordinated and delivered these sessions which have been extremely popular with our members. Gwynne has over 30 years of football coaching experience including being part of the West Ham academy program. To that end, I am pleased to be working with Gwynne and Concept 4 in developing the most comprehensive technical development program available worldwide Alan Pardew - Manager Newcastle United F.C. At West Ham United FC we rmly believe that outstanding technical ability is essential for premiership success. The development in our academy players technique under Gwynne has been excellent Tony Carr - Academy Director West Ham United F.C. The focus on my technical development in those early years with Gwynne helped me become the player I am today Jack Hingert - Brisbane Roar F.C. 4
Continued from page 1..from the president We welcome Gwynne to WPFC and are delighted and privileged to have a coach of his experience and ability on board. We also encourage our members to enrol in Gwynne's sessions for Term 2. (see flier on previous page) These sessions provide fabulous technical training and are incredibly important for the development of our junior footballers. The sessions are designed to complement the weekly team training sessions, which naturally have a slightly different team oriented focus. I am sure that attendance at the Concept4 sessions will see a significant improvement in the technical footballing skills of WPFC players over Term 2, not to mention increased enjoyment of football from our members. The evening of Monday, 31 March, was a historic night for the Club as we hosted our first internal coaching course. Will Thom presented the FFA Grassroots Coaching Course to our junior coaches with the assistance of Jason Eagar, the Technical Director at the NSFA. The course was an outstanding success with our 20 attendees providing extremely positive feedback on the course content and delivery. Both Will and Jason were truly engaging throughout, awash with modern coaching ideas, good humour, and debunking some old strategies and myths about effective coaching for kids. Thanks very much to Jason and the NSFA for assisting with running the session and his support of WPFC in educating our coaches. Without question, our team of junior coaches are now better equipped to develop our junior footballers in the months ahead. We held another Grassroots Coaching Course (suitable for U6s-U8s) on Monday night following a successful an Introduction to SAP (Skills Acquisition Program) aimed at coaches and parents with children in the U8s-U12s age groups. We strongly encouraging other parents to attend any future sessions so that they too can see and appreciate our vision of coach education and player development, which is aligned to the FFA National Curriculum. The Football Subcommittee is strongly endorsing a style of football within the Club which rewards a passing and possession-based game for our juniors this season, and long into the future. We recognise that, initially, "results" achieved by our junior teams might appear to slip backwards as a new style of football is learned, developed and embraced by our juniors. It is important to remember however that small sided football (up to and including U11s) is centred on non-competition matches. Development of our juniors is our overarching goal, not individual match results. This is a football journey for the Club, for our kids and of course for our magnificent parents who attend and support the children each weekend. Our task together, is to develop more technically proficient and independently thinking junior footballers who can improve their football in a team environment. Parents of course have an incredibly important role to play in the development of our juniors. We ask parents to continue to provide fantastic encouragement to our players with a particular focus on praising effort and to allow our coaches to provide instruction and tactical direction for our teams. An important coaching appointment I would like to announce is Matthew Collins for the U11 Girls Diamond League team. Matthew has extensive experience in coaching juniors and has made some impressive progress with the girls who are one of the foundation teams for the inaugural Diamond League season, which has the objective of improving the standard of junior girls football in the district. 5
Several of our committee members met with the builder of our new Clubhouse at Norman Griffiths Oval over the Easter weekend. I attended this meeting and I am very excited at the progress being made and at how fantastic the completed Clubhouse will be for our members. We look forward to providing our members with the opportunity to enjoy the new Clubhouse in the second half of the season. Finally, thanks to our fabulous sponsors for their on-going support and to all volunteers within WPFC including coaches, managers, co-ordinators and committee members. I wish all members an enjoyable and safe season of football and I look forward to seeing all of our teams in action over the season. Kevin Johnson President Our Sponsors WPFC is a volunteer organisation and thus very dependent on the support of our sponsors. We would like to show our appreciation for the ongoing generosity of the following sponsors. We also encourage you to support to these fantastic sponsors. I want to be be a pymble player Continued 6
SKILLS SESSIONS FOR SENIOR PLAYERS Concept4 technical skills sessions for Over 35s players 7.30pm to 9.00pm at Norman Griffiths Oval The WPFC Committee have piloted these sessions since the start of the season with a view to ensuring that coaching opportunities were provided to the broader club members and not just juniors. Gwynne has been a professional football coach for the past 30 years and has worked all around the world including at the West Ham FC junior academy which is considered to be one of the best in England. Feedback that we have received from participants is that the sessions have been very well received and are a great way of improving football skills and fitness levels. The cost of the sessions is a maximum of $20 each reducing to as low as $15 per session depending on number of attendees. There is also flexibility offered as commitment and payment is only on a session by session basis. WOMEN'S ONLY TRAINING NSFA conduct all age women skills and fitness training in a non-competitive environment. Led by Gui De Souza (current Australian Beach Soccer player and ex Brazilian Youth International) the sessions are run on a Wednesday morning at 9.30am and Friday night at 7.30pm at the Willis Centre, Castle Cove. To register for term 2 visit the NSFA website. DIAMOND LEAGUE FOR UNDER11 GIRLS KICKS OFF Diamond League, a new girl's development league initiated by NSFA has kicked off. All teams competing in the League have fully licensed coaches and all follow the national coaching curriculum. Girls must train a minimum of twice a week. The concept is to create a more balanced competition with girls from all over the Association now having the opportunity to access quality coaching. The game of the round had to be the 3-3 draw between the fast improving Hornsby Heights girls against the might of the Northbridge A Squad. Clubs currently participating in the Diamond League include Lindfield, Northbridge, West Pymble, Hornsby Heights and North Turramurra.
How to watch your kid s game without being a jerk When we teach our kids a team sport there are really TWO LESSONS happening. There is the sport and then there are the deeper, truer, lessons. Lessons like how to be part of a team how to win with class and lose with grace how to show up, take risks, fall down, get back up, and how to treat friends and adversaries. Like my husband says, very few of his players will ever play professional sports but all of them will become citizens. And so what Craig is really trying to do as the kids coach is to USE SOCCER to teach kids how to be brave, kind and happy citizens. Keeping that end goal in mind, here are a few suggestions: 1 Please respect your kid s courage. Be in AWE of her. Look at what she s doing! She s out there on a big field in front of screaming adult spectators trying something new and scary and taking huge public risks. Can you imagine the COURAGE that takes a small child? Can you imagine how scary that would be for YOU? Have some reverence for every kid out there, especially yours. Don t wait till she scores ten goals to be proud of her. Tell her after every game that she was so brave and that you couldn t be prouder of her because life is about showing up, trying, being kind, resting, and then trying again. And that s what she s doing. So no matter how she plays hug her and tell her, YES, brave sister! Well done! 2 Don t trash talk the coach. If you have questions about his methods or vision call him up and ask to talk person to person. Be a grown-up about it because the way you handle your concerns teaches your child how a good citizen deals with conflict. Again we are not just trying to win soccer championships here we are doing something INFINITELY MORE IMPORTANT we are shaping hearts and minds. So behave the way you d like your child to behave. If you must complain about the coach maybe don t do it on the sidelines. Likely, his wife is sitting right next to you. It s awkward. Also and I wish this went without saying but my experience over the past few seasons has taught me otherwise never, ever trash talk any player on the field, from either team. The number of exceptions to this rule is zero exceptions. They are children. You are a grown up. That is all. 3 Yelling out directions to individual players during the game: please look down at your shirt first. If your shirt says the word Coach on it: Yes! Go for it! Yell away! But if your shirt does NOT say Coach: shhhhhhhh. All the yelling confuses the players they can t hear the coach, and so they re trying to PLEASE YOU instead of learning to PLAY SOCCER. For that one hour: you are not the boss of them. Sit back and enjoy it! And don t worry most of that one hour: you are not the boss of them. Sit back and enjoy it! And don t worry most of the directions you re calling out like: GET THE BALL! and FASTER! are unnecessary, really. The kids might not know much, but they definitely know they re supposed to run fast and try to get the ball. They re trying. It s just that they re kids and sports are hard. So give them some time to think and to listen for their coach instead of just constantly reacting to you. On Saturday mornings you are not the athlete and you are not the coach. You are a parent. So just parent just be a loving, supportive, encouraging cheer-er on-er. 4 If you need to make or take a quick call on your phone go for it! If you need to have a twenty minute business or personal call maybe step away from the sideline. This is a really special time for many parents and we re trying to take it all in. Signal that you think this time is special too by removing yourself if you have business to tend to.
5 Consider displaying appreciation for the other team. The big difference between THEM and US is that their names got placed on one roster while our kids name got placed on another. So, no difference. When trying to have compassion for both teams it s helpful to remember that most of these players JUST GOT BORN during the past decade. They re little. So we should be kind to all of them, not just the ones wearing the same color as our kid. I always pretend that a dear friend with a kid on the other team is sitting beside me. If I wouldn t say it with her there, I don t say it at all. 6 Ask your child how she d like you to cheer for her. My son likes me to be really quiet on the sideline. Tish likes me to call out her name a few times per game, but not too much. Amma wants me to cheer for everyone throughout the entire game as loudly and often as humanly possible. I LOVE AMMA S GAMES THE BEST BECAUSE I AM NATURALLY A CRAZY CHEERER. But I respect all my kids wishes. One player on Craig s team last year always wanted to play defense. When Craig asked him about this he said he was afraid to score because he knew his very vocal (and precious) dad would go crazy with loud pride and this kid was just too shy to handle that. He was afraid to tell his dad though, so he played beneath his ability all season. Find out what your kid needs from you on the sideline. Remember that you are there FOR your child, not the other way around. She s not performing for you, you are supporting her. 7 Consider broadening your definitions of wins and losses. Last season several parents became upset because Craig was playing everyone instead of just the best players. These parents insisted that Craig was hurting their chances to win. And Craig had to explain that at this age- his goals for the game were as follows: Everyone stays safe. Everyone plays Everyone receives both praise and direction from him at least once. Everyone shows excellent sportsmanship. Everyone s smiling. That s a win for him. With the younger kids- Craig usually can t remember what the score was- but he can always tell you who worked on her shooting and who helped up a player from the other team and who played keeper even though she was really scared. Victory, victory, VICTORY! 8 Your kid, more than anything wants to HAVE FUN and MAKE YOU PROUD. Please, please teach her that she can do both at the same time. Most of these kids just want to pull on their cool shin guards, pump their little legs up and down the field, test out their courage, and eat orange slices with their friends. Let them have that. They have the rest of their lives to compete and worry and strive and fret. Let s let them be kids and be free for now. Let s teach them that the victory is in SHOWING UP AND TAKING A RISK, not in the outcome 9 Win or Lose thank your coach. In front of the kids, shake the coach s hand and say Good Game, Coach. He deserves your public, sincere thanks because he works hard and loves your kid. And you never know his story. He could even be a former professional soccer player who learned during his twenty-five year soccer career that the best thing sports have Win to offer is CHARACTER BUILDING. And so what he s doing is more important than winning. He s BUILDING. He s helping to BUILD YOUR KID. Thank him for it. See more at:
Hello Goalkeeper, Hope you all had a good start to the New Year! A lot of positive momentum with Upper90 College, with some great goalkeepers who have come through our process to date going onto the US to play. We've also now become a strategic partner of the largest coaches organization in the world, the NSCAA (Upper90 College NSCAA - Strategic Partner). Keeping to the theme of goalkeeper development, I'd be up for training any of you who are interested before your season starts, so am kicking off goalkeeper training down at Rothwell Park, Concord (NSW) (many of you have trained with me at this venue previously). Sessions will be reasonably priced at only $12 per session over an 10 week training block (paid in advance), irrespective of age. Post the 10 weeks, each goalkeeper will receive an individual assessment from myself and one of my staff. I'm looking at a minimum of 10 goalkeepers per age group (2 age group blocks). I'll finalize times once we solidify numbers. John Stevanja Owner Keeper Skool; Co-Founder Upper90 College Mobile: Keeper Skool jstevanja@keeper-skool.com or jstevanja@u90college.com
