7 What is employment? The word employment for people with disabilities is often used very loosely. When the majority of people go out to get a job, they do so expecting to receive compensation for their time and efforts. The federal government defines "integrated employment as jobs" in which people with disabilities are paid directly by their company, work in a typical environment where they can interact with coworkers who aren't disabled and have opportunities for career advancement. Unfortunately, when people with disabilities go out to get a job, they are often provided volunteer, or job experience. Supported and fully inclusive employment programs (where people with disabilities and people without disabilities) increase independence, productivity, community involvement and self-esteem of people with disabilities through real work in integrated settings. It enables people with disabilities to work and earn wages in the community alongside others who do not have disabilities. With the help of a job coach, who guides and prompts the worker as needed, the worker develops the skills needed for more independent work. Supported employment services may include outreach, case management, assessment, job development, job matching, job placement, participation in supported self employment, job coaching, evaluation of worker productivity, counseling, transportation, and long term supports to maintain employment and employer and community relations. Employment really means that a worker (regardless of disability status) should be in an integrated environment and workers should receive at least minimum wage or an equivalent wage to workers without disabilities. The Arc Downriver is doing a Little Caesar s Pizza Kit Fundraiser to help our Sports Program. All orders are to be TURNED IN NO LATER THAN Thursday, Nov.1, Please turn in all orders and payments to the Arc Downriver office, 1028 Oak St. Wyandotte.
