The financial support of our donors can often be the difference in being good or being great. There are few programs in the nation that can boast the success of Old Dominion University s athletic program. Since 1975, Monarch teams have won 28 national championships and four individual titles, while graduating over 90 percent of the student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility. The Big Blue Club has helped in this championship effort since The organization has grown from one that was primarily an annual fund with a social component to one that retains the annual fund as its top priority and provides support in the form of endowments, capital projects, coaches retention and enhancement funds, while maintaining a social component. Over the years we have had many sport specific booster organizations which created a splintered identity among our fans. The time is right to create a new brand that celebrates ODU s championship efforts and better reflects the unified role of the University, Intercollegiate Foundation, our foundation board, Big Blue Club and ODU Athletics. This brand is the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation (ODAF), and we are Building a New Foundation for Success. Our long term goal of privately generating funds to cover our entire athletic scholarship bill of $5 million is attainable, but not without you. We will need to double our annual giving and membership to achieve this lofty goal. We are asking our student-athletes, coaches and staff to give a Championship Effort on behalf of ODU. I hope you will consider providing the same championship effort as well. Two ways you can help support our mission is by taking part in our 110% Club and Power of One initiatives, which are explained in this brochure. I would like to thank you in advance for your loyal support and I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our ODU athletic events. All the best, and GO S!!! Dr. Camden Wood Selig Athletic Director Old Dominion Athletic Foundation: Ticket Office:
2 Transition to Old Dominion Athletic Foundation New in 2011 In 1964 the Old Dominion University Intercollegiate Foundation was formed to financially support the athletic program. In the initial year, 30 donors helped raise $5,000. Several years later the Big Blue Club was formed in 1971 to add a social component to the foundation. Over the years we have evolved into an organization that still retains the annual fund as our top priority, but now provide support through endowments, capital projects, coaches retention, enhancement funds all the while offering social opportunites and special events. This growth as well as a desire to unify under a single brand identity that is more closely tied to the university, its mission and athletic department led to formation of the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation. The following is a timeline of the evolution of the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation: ODUIF is formed by the late Athletic Director Bud Metheny Big Blue Club is formed Priority Seating and hospitality benefits begin for Big Blue Club Members at Norfolk Scope and the ODU Fieldhouse Ted Constant Convocation Center opens and priority points system is implemented and endowed scholarships becomes a primary focus of ODUIF 2005 & Reseating occurs for men s and women s basketball utilizing priority points system ODU football begins with naming rights secured for Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium, Ainslie Football Complex and the Alcaraz-Weinstein Family Plaza a record number of members (2,576) donate a record $2.7 million to the annual fund March ODAF (The Old Dominion Athletic Foundation) is formed Young Alumni Program This initiative builds on our membership goals while reaching out to ODU young alumni from the class 2007 and forward. Alumni who qualify receive double the membership benefits, providing a jump-start on earning priority points and it s a great way to get involved with the ODAF. Be sure to mark your pledge card for enrolling in the Young Alumni Program. The Power of One - Referral Program We ask our players, coaches and administration to always put forth a Championship Effort, and are now asking you to do the same. The athletic department recently completed a five year strategic plan and we will be asked to support these initiatives by increasing our annual fund by an average of 10% each year for the next five years. A copy of the plan will be posted on-line at It will take a Monarch team effort in order to reach these lofty goals. This is one area where you can make your Championship Effort. IF 2,576 current ODAF members each sign up one new member, THEN the new number of ODAF members will double to 5,152. IF each of the new 2,576 ODAF members contributed $100, THEN ODAF will increase its annual fund dollars by 9.5% or $257,600. To reward those who participate in this membership drive, the ODAF will reward each donor with 25 priority points for every new donor (minimum of $100) they sign up. Every active donor can sign up to 4 new donors, which would result in a total of 100 new priority points. In order to verify the referral please fill out the name in the referral space on the attached pledge card. We cannot thank all of our former Big Blue Club members and now our Old Dominion Athletic Foundation members enough for their loyal support over the years. Moving forward, we hope everyone understands our new name change to the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation and we can all continue to make ODU Athletics stronger than ever before. 3 4
3 Mission of the ODAF Ways to Give The ODAF is integral to the success of Old Dominion University Athletics, and is the channel through which our fans and alumni can partner with our coaches and student-athletes for the advancement of the athletics program. With the ever-increasing cost of competing at the NCAA Division I level, a dynamic donor base is critical to putting the strongest possible teams on the field and court. The mission of the ODAF is to raise financial support for Old Dominion University athletics and to ensure that our coaches and studentathletes have everything they need to compete for national championships. Members of the ODAF also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that their gifts are ultimately investments into the lives of our student-athletes, helping to provide them with the academic foundation and character traits learned through athletics competition that are essential to success in life. Cash Donations Most gifts to the ODAF take this form and it s as easy as writing a check or using your Visa, MasterCard, or American Express card. Checks should be made payable to the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation. Payment plan options are available; please contact the ODAF office for additional information. Payroll Deduction Please contact the ODAF if you are an ODU Faculty / Staff and interested in the convenience of payroll deduction to make your gift. Securities It may be possible to eliminate paying capital gains tax and receive an income tax charitable deduction for gifts of long-term appreciated securities. Please consult your tax advisor and contact the ODAF for further information. Gifts in Kind Gifts of goods or services can be of great financial assistance to the Athletics Department while offering the donor a tax deduction for the fair market value of the gift. Please consult your tax advisor and contact the ODAF for further information. Matching Gifts Many companies will match your contribution to the ODAF. Submit your company s matching gift form with your contribution and it can significantly increase your support and associated giving level. Per IRS Publication 526, the IRS 80/20 Rule relating to charitable contributions from which a donor receives or expects to receive benefits (the right to purchase parking passes, priority seating for events, etc.) must also be applied to the matching gift claims as well. If benefits are related to a ODAF contribution, the matching claim could only be submitted for 80% or the portion of the contribution, the matching claim could only be submitted for 80% or the portion of the contribution which is considered truly charitable and tax deductible. Please make note of this IRS policy when considering your ODAF contribution. Memorial Gifts Remember a friend or a loved one with memorial gifts to the ODAF. Estate Planning You may donate through will provisions, life insurance and other bequests. Estates gifts may be made by donating a designated amount, a real asset or making a residual bequest. If you are interested in including ODU in your Estates Plans please contact our ODAF staff. Online Giving You can make a gift online at 5 6
4 Why I Chose ODU Why Give? I chose ODU because I felt it gave me an opportunity to get a great education and to become a better person on and off the golf course. I also saw a great chance to play golf for a top Division 1 program and for such a great gentleman like Coach Rudisill. Eric Onesi ( 10) Men s Golf Bear, Delaware I came to Old Dominion because I wanted to get a quality education and play basketball for an outstanding coaching staff. I was very impressed with the program, the university community and the surrounding Hampton Roads area. Who wouldn t want to play their collegiate career at the Constant Center. Gerald Lee ( 10) Men s Basketball / Forward Uusikaupunki, Finland The ODAF is the sole fund-raising vehicle for Old Dominion University Athletics. Through its annual fund drive, the ODAF raises contributions in support of student-athlete scholarships. The long term goal of the ODAF is to fund all ODU athletic scholarships on an annual basis. The ODU Athletic Department receives no state funding and relies heavily on season ticket sales, sponsorships and advertising, student fees, and private contributions from our ODAF members. With your help we will continue to work to reach our goal of funding all athletic scholarships, which in turn, will allow us to continue to invest in our programs for them to remain competitive in the CAA and nationally. The ODAF is very pleased with our recent success and the generosity of our members. In 2010 we were able to reach a record high of 2,576 donors contributing $2.696,329 million. Although, this is a high water mark for our program, we need everyone s support to reach our goal of being fully funded, with a scholarship bill of over $5,000,000. Your Donation s Impact Here are examples of how the gifts made to the ODAF are used to support the education of ODU student-athletes. ODAF Total Membership ODAF Annual Growth 2,420 2,576 2,808 1, M 1,443 I chose to attend ODU for several reasons. The academic reputation of the university was strong and I felt that I could be a successful student-athlete. The professor / student ratio was smaller than most schools and the support system in place for student-athletes made me very confident that my academic needs would be met. The Lady Monarch basketball team was a premier program nationally and I wanted to compete with the best for a National Championship every year. 1, ODAF Total Annual Fund Dollars Raised 1.18M JMU M 1.82M 2.37M 2.69M 7 Anne Donovan ( 83) Basketball Hall of Famer 2008 Head Coach USA Women s Basketball Olympic Squad W&M 10 8

The intent of our system is to reward loyalty and support, while enabling new donors to acquire appropriate benefits in recognition of their financial support of the ODAF scholarship fund. The Priority Points System is used to determine priority when allocating seat assignments at home, away, neutral and post-season games, parking, seating improvements and other special athletic events and activities. Priority points are awarded based on contributions to ODAF, and, are only active with an annual minimum gift of $100. The information below shows how our priority points are calculated. A: With the cost of in and out-of state tuition continuing to rise, every gift to the ODAF is important as we strive to build our programs, award aid to our studentathletes, and continue to win championships. Q: How will my gift to the ODAF be used? A: Donations are primarily used to provide scholarship aid to our eighteen varsity sport programs. Gifts are also utilized to support facility improvements and programmatic needs of the ODU Athletic Department. Q: How do I get better seats for ODU games? A: By joining the ODAF, members receive priority seating for season tickets, away games, and for tournaments based on their giving level and priority point total. Current members can also improve their seat location by upgrading their giving level and priority point total. Q: How does one join or renew the ODAF? A: Any size donation makes an impact on ODU Athletics, but to enjoy the benefits of the ODAF, a gift of $100 or more must be donated. Use the pledge card included with this brochure, sign up online by visiting or call All gifts to the ODAF are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Important Re-Seating Information The ODAF re-seats everyone for both men s and women s basketball every three seasons and every four seasons for football. It is important to make note that we will be re-seating for basketball prior to the basketball season. Expect to receive further information on this process during the summer of 2011 and appointment times to begin in September, Seating Key Season Tickets Premium Sideline Seating Students Family Plan Tickets Visitors Reserved-Univ. / Athletic Dept. Loge Seating / Suites Seating Key Hospitality Suites Club Level Seating Priority Seats Family Plan Sections Student Sections Group Section Appointment times are based on your total number of priority points. For instance, the donor with the most priority points would receive the first appointment time to select their seats and so on. Re-seating helps provide everyone a fair opportunity to receive the best seats possible. Once one selects their seats they will keep those seats until the next re-seating, as long as they continue their ODAF membership level and purchase their season tickets. It is also important to make note when football re-seating takes place after the 2012 season, any football season ticket holders who are NOT current ODAF members are NOT guaranteed football season tickets for the 2013 football season. Those who do have football season tickets and are not current ODAF members are highly encouraged to join the ODAF; by doing so you have a greater chance to continue purchasing football season tickets. For those who have further questions on re-seating or joining the ODAF, please contact Reminder - Basketball re-seating is September,
