Parent / Spectator Code of Conduct Special Olympics are committed to the highest ideals of sport and expect all parents and spectators to honor Sport and Special Olympics. All Special Olympics parents and spectators should observe the following code: Remember athletes are participating for their enjoyment. Encourage participation, but do not force it. Applaud good performances and efforts from all individuals and teams. Congratulate all participants on their performance, regardless of the game s outcome. Focus on the athletes effort and performance, rather than whether they win or lose. Encourage athletes to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence. Never ridicule or yell at people for making a mistake or losing the competition. Remember that athletes learn best by example. Appreciate good performance and skillful plays by all participants. Respect the decisions of officials and teach athletes to do the same. Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials, teachers and administrators. (Remember, without them there would be no participation). Condemn the use of violence in any form, whether it is by spectators, coaches, officials or players. Show respect for your team s opponents. Without them, there would be no game. Encourage athletes and coaches to follow the rules and the officials decisions. Swearing and/or inappropriate language will not be tolerated at Special Olympics Michigan events. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. Obey all federal, state and local laws, facility and venue rules and Special Olympic rules. Special Olympics Michigan reserves the right to dismiss parents and/or spectators from any Special Olympics Michigan event if the Parent and Spectator Code of Conduct are violated. 1st Violation: distribution of the Parent and Spectator Code of Conduct warning. 2nd Violation: removal from Special Olympics Michigan event for the remainder of the day. 3rd Violation: removal for remainder of the season. 4 Special Olympics Michigan

Special Olympics Project UNIFY Special Olympics Project UNIFY is an education-based project that uses the sports and education programs of Special Olympics to activate young people across the U.S in order to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics believes that through sports, young people can make a difference in friendships, schools and communities. PROJECT UNIFY KEY CHARACTERISTICS Youth Leadership School/Community Collaborations Unifying Programming Creating Sustaining Relationships CORE ACTIVITIES Inclusive Sports: Unified Sports provides opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities to participate in sports activities alongside one another and which have been found to be among the most conducive activity for breaking down stereotypes. Youth Leadership & Advocacy: Each school forms a Youth Activation Committee (YAC) comprised of students with and without intellectual disabilities that gives them opportunities to take on leadership roles in promoting Project UNIFY activities in their schools and in the community. Whole School Engagement: Provides opportunities for all students in the school to participate in Project UNIFY through schoolwide activities (e.g. R-word campaigns, Fans in the Stands, Polar Plunges). 14 Special Olympics Michigan

Special Olympics Project UNIFY PROJECT UNIFY OUTCOMES The magic of Project UNIFY is manifested in the inclusive friendships formed, seeing paired youth in action as leaders, creating communities of caring and respect. Youth become core leaders in their school communities using Unified Sports and Spread the Word to End the Word as the catalyst for impacting change in a school climate. Administrators and teachers take the educated risk to support the vision and insight of youth to create inclusive environments in their schools through Unified Sports and youth leadership opportunities with a clear vision of impacting school environments. The inspiration and passion that comes from experiencing Special Olympics sports motivates young people to seek a world of unity, and then provides students with and without disabilities with the skills and opportunities to create social change. Policymakers and education leaders develop policies and support quality practices to encourage positive school climates with safe and nurturing learning environments for all students. For more information to get Project UNIFY in your school, contact Special Olympics Michigan projectunify@somi.org, call or visit State Basketball Finals 15

Presenting Sponsor Amway would like to welcome all Special Olympics Michigan athletes, coaches and volunteers to the 2016 State Basketball Finals. Special Olympics Michigan congratulates Amway on 14 years of community involvement! Good Luck Athletes! 16 Special Olympics Michigan 16

Thank You to Our Generous Supporters THANKS TO YOU Just as it takes a large number of people to run a successful company, it also requires a large number of people and community support to run a successful Special Olympics Michigan State Basketball Finals and Skills Competition. More than 150 volunteers are recruited every year to run the event. All have a place to be, at a certain time, with a specific objective in mind. The Grand Rapids Jaycees make up part of the volunteer force, but other companies, community organizations, and members of the community generously donate their time and services. Without each and every one of these people, the Special Olympics Michigan State Basketball Finals and Skills Competition would not be the great event that these inspiring athletes deserve. On behalf of the Jaycees Tournament Committee and Special Olympics Michigan, we extend our sincere thanks to the following organizations for their generous contributions and assistance to help make this year s tournament a true success: Bid 2 Benefit Youth D&W Food Centers Juliet Dragos Gazelle Sports Grand Rapids Jaycee Foundation Marge s Donut Den S.A. Abraham & Sons Wolverine Worldwide This tax season, do something Special! This tax season do something Special by donating to Special Olympics Michigan. Donating is as easy as checking a box on the Voluntary Contributions Schedule (Form 4642) when you file your state taxes. Your contribution will help to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in 22 Olympic-type sports to 23,317 athletes here in Michigan. Through programs in sports health, education, and community building, Special Olympics is changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Leadership gifts from Peter & Joan Secchia and Mike & Sue Jandernoa total $1,000,000. Their gifts are a challenge to Special Olympics Michigan to raise an equal amount for the basketball fund. Our 2016 Athletes like Audrey fundraising luncheon for the State Basketball Finals will be held Tuesday, June 7 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.
