OCTOBER 31, DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE EVENT CALENDAR Dear NSA Parents & Guardians, Oct. 29- Red Ribbon Week (See Below) Oct. 31 Halloween Parade 8:45am Nov. 1 Boys Salem 4:30PM (Rescheduled) Nov. 2 Early Out 1:10pm 2. Wear comfy shoes - Make sure you and your children are in comfortable, well-fitting shoes. Girls in dresses should avoid heels, and all shoelaces should be double-knotted to avoid tripping in the dark. Nov. 5 Boys Lehi 4:30PM 3. Make sure all costumes are short - Long costumes that drag on the ground can be dangerous, especially at night. After purchasing your child?s costume, make sure it?s an appropriate length, and hem anything that?s too long to avoid tripping. Nov. 7 Boys 4:30PM Nov. 9 Veterans Assembly 9am Thank you to the many parents who joined us for the Halloween parade and/ or helped out during the elementary parties. We love our families. Please remind your children to stay safe this Halloween. If your family celebrates this holiday, please take some time to read through these wonderful tips to keep everyone safe. 1. Plan a route in advance - Trick or treating could take you several streets away from your house, which can cause sore feet and tired legs. Avoid long treks by mapping out a route before leaving the house. Stick to paths that you and your child are familiar with to avoid getting lost. 4. Avoid masks - Masks can make it difficult for your child to see or breathe. If possible, skip the mask altogether and use non-toxic make-up to complete the costume instead. 5. Check your child?s sweets - When sorting through sweets at the end of the night throw away any sweets that are not in their original wrapping, or that look as though they may have been opened. Better safe than sorry! Nov. 12 Boys 4:30PM 6. Houses to avoid - Ensure your kids only visit houses that have their lights on, and preferably only those that have some sort of Halloween decoration outside. Make sure your kids know to never go inside someone?s house. 7. Let there be light! - Make it a rule to trick or treat only in well-lit areas. Stay on streets that you are familiar with, and avoid shortcuts through dark alleys. If you're not sure where a street goes or whether it is safe, don't take a chance on it. 8. Fill up - A hungry zombie can be a scary thing. Prevent your kids from overloading on sweets and chocolate by feeding them a healthy and filling dinner before trick or treating begins! ~Oct ober Healt h y Habit s ~ Try wearing a pedometer when you trick or treat! this year. Make it a family contest and see who can get the most steps!! 9. Driving? - Watch out for fast moving monsters! If you?re out in your car keep your eyes open for excitable trick or treaters. Stick rigidly to the speed limit in any residential areas. You always want to make sure you have extra time to brake if a child darts in front of your car. 10. Pets alert - No matter how much they beg don?t feed any Halloween treats to your pets. It will make them ill - make sure your children know this too. The focus should be on the men and women that have served our country and our gratitude for them. We will be judging them on creativity, quality, and subject matter. First graders wrapped up our Geography unit with a close look at our beautiful state of Utah. Mrs. Duke came in for art enrichment and showed us how to paint the Delicate Arch rock formation that you see when you visit Moab or look on Utah license plates. First grade also had a fun time making a Utah map with graham crackers, frosting and candy! We used blue sugar to identify the Great Salt Lake; a candy star to mark our capital, Salt Lake City; candy corns for the Rocky Mountains; and a Twizzlers string to show main roads in Utah. Of course the best part was being able to eat our map at the end. Utah is so much YUM!

On October 29th, 2018, North Star Academy students celebrated Farm to School by trying a fruit that was locally grown. Last year we did apples, this year we did pumpkins. Learning about and trying new ways of eating local fruits and vegetables is a fun way to get excited about delicious local produce. This also helps students understand where their food comes from and support local farmers. We are familiar with pumpkin pie and pumpkin cookies.. Families can continue this learning opportunity at home. Here are a couple of ideas. * Visit your local farmers?market. Buy something you?ve never tried before, cook it and share with your family and friends. NSA) PUMPKIN FACTS Scientifically speaking, pumpkins are a fruit (they contain seeds) but when it comes to cooking, they are often referred to as vegetables. Pumpkins are grown on every continent except Antarctica.There are more than 45 different varieties of Pumpkin. Pumpkins are usually orange but can sometimes be yellow, white, green or red. They?re good for you.?pumpkins are packed with nutrients, especially beta-carotene and fiber. Our bodies use beta-carotene to produce vitamin A. In fact, half a cup of pumpkin provides 200 percent of the current recommendation for vitamin A, along with pigments that promote eye health. Pumpkins are rich in potassium, which helps our muscles contract and nerves fire. Pumpkin is low in calories. Even pumpkin seeds prove very nutritious.
