Lake Lenore School 525 Lake Ave. P.O. Box 40 Lake Lenore, SK S0K 2J0 PH: (306) FAX: (306) Wow, with the change in our newsletter format (every second month) time really does fly by and there has been a lot happening at Lake Lenore School. Our annual Terry Fox Walk was held on Sept 28 th. Once again, our students & community went over and above and donated over $1700 to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. This was our best year ever despite having fewer students and families. Many thanks to Mrs. Brinkman for organizing the walk and for treating us to some delicious apples along the way!! Our Cross Country team had an excellent season culminating with a 1A team silver and many outstanding individual results. Thanks so much to Naomi Prodahl for once again helping Mr. Strueby with the Cross Country coaching duties the team s success definitely has to be those breakfast snacks Mrs. Prodahl provides for the team!! Our soccer teams are once again having successful seasons. Our Jr. Girls battled hard all season to earn the District title!! Many thanks to Mrs. Kolbeck and student coaches Ashley, Jessie, Jocelyn & Laura!! Our Jr. Boys wound up their season with a mini-tournament defeating both Middle Lake and Muenster congrats on a great season boys many thanks to Mrs. Korte and student coaches Calder & Joel for helping out!! The Sr. Boys had a fantastic season throughout the regular season and were very fortunate to host both a Regional and the Provincial Tournament. The draw saw us on a crash course to the Gold medal game against Middle Lake, there was no doubt that it would be an exciting match!! Our boys scored early to set the tone for the match and although there were a few tense moments, our boys dug deep near the end of the second half to clinch the gold!! Great work all season boys and congrats on your wellearned gold medal!! Congrats also to coaches Mr. Strueby and Cole Meyer!! We are very fortunate to have the facility and community support necessary to host provincial tournaments and none of that is possible without the dedication first of all of our coaches and staff members but most importantly our parents many thanks once again!! Our Grade 8 students received training in the Beyond the Hurt program on Oct 5 th and Oct 9 th. The workshop, led by Horizon School Division Superintendent, Mr. Crandall Hrynkiw, taught our students how to facilitate workshops for younger students in our school around the topics of bullying, cyber bullying and exclusion. I am very proud of these students for taking on this very important leadership role in our school!! On Oct 15 th, Muenster School students joined us for a performance from OSAC (Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils). Hip Hop Hoop featured a fusion of modern day Hip Hop with traditional First Nations Hoop dancing along with a story line teaching the value of maintaining ones culture and traditions but also valuing that of others as well, discovering the similarities of all rather than focusing on differences. An inspiring performance indeed!! Oct 14 th -20 th was Education Week and we once again held our Annual Open House and Book Fair on Oct 18 th. We had a great turnout from the community for supper and lots of support for the Fall Bazaar/Bake Sale as well. Many thanks to all our families that donated items and especially for the donations we received from other community members. Thank you to Donna Nosbush that donated hand-made dishcloths and Pat (Gerry) Gerwing for the homemade bread!! Many thanks to Gina and Tom Ripley of Lake Lenore Meats for donating all of the smokies for supper!! Our Book Fair was once again a success with many donations from local businesses!! Thank you to Alison Gerwing and Jessie Wilson for their presentations!! Thank you to our Gr 3/4/5 class, Mrs. Kolbeck and to the Humboldt Rural North Band for their performances!! A very special part of the evening was the unveiling of a special memorial to all our former students and staff that are no longer with us. The memorial was created by a local metalsmith Tyler Dier, who was present at the unveiling as well along with Horizon School Division Director Kevin Garinger. Many thanks to our SCC members that had a vision for the project and made it happen. The memorial was
installed this past week in front of the school, if you can, make sure to stop by and have a look! Breakfast for Learning & Volunteer Reader programs both began in October. The success of the programs is due to the numerous and generous donations of time and funds from our community!! Over the past several years, our scores on reading assessments have steadily increased due in part certainly to both these programs!! The SRC has been busy as well this fall. Four of our student leaders and SRC Advisor Mrs. Hauser attended the Saskatchewan Leadership Conference in Langenburg earlier in September. It is great to see so many of our students willing to take on a leadership role in our school!! We held our annual Magazine Sales Campaign this fall and besides earning some fun prizes our students were looking to meet the school goals the SRC set out at the beginning of the campaign. Proceeds from Magazine Sales go toward SRC activities throughout the year such as Spirit Team activities and helping to offset the cost of bussing for our annual ski trip. Our Remembrance Day Service will be held on Thursday, Nov 8 th at 11:00 am in the gym. This year marks the 100 th anniversary of the Armistice, which lead to introduction of the Remembrance Day observance on Nov 11 th every year since. The entire community is certainly welcome to join us in commemorating the sacrifice of our Canadian Service men and women. Thank you to our Gr 8-10 students and Mr. Strueby for planning our service once again this year. Report cards for our K Gr 12 students will be sent home on Nov 8 th, with Parent-Teacher-Student interviews being held on the evening of Thursday November 15 th from 3:30 to 9:30 pm. Please make plans to join us on that evening but please feel free to make other arrangements with your child s homeroom teacher if you are unable to make it that night. New this year for our Gr 9-12 students and their teachers is the introduction of a planning app, REMIND, that should make planning for schoolwork and activities a little easier. All Gr 9-12 teachers are using the app and parents are invited to join the classes as well to get updates on homework and other important deadlines. Make sure to ask your Gr 9-12 student for the information needed to join the groups. Don t forget also that there is no school on Nov 9 th as this is our day off in lieu of PTS interviews and also Nov 12 th as Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday this year. 3 Grades 1 & 2 Our classroom has been a busy place for the last two months. I feel like we re off to a great start and have accomplished lots. As we head into November we will put the turkeys and goblins behind us and start preparing for Remembrance Day and the Christmas Concert. We will also have a chance to meet with parents to discuss the progress the children have made and to set goals for the future. The students are excited about their reading groups and most of them have already filled one incentive chart to receive a prize. The daily reading at home helps them to develop their oral reading skills as well as comprehension and language skills. This month we are working on making connections to what we read so this is another skill that can be reinforced at home. Our writing lessons in October have focused on A Book of our Favourite Things. These books are near completion and will soon be ready to take home to read to our families. In math each class has completed a unit on Patterns and is now working on Numbers to 20(Grade 1) and Numbers to 100(Grade 2). Unlike most adults I know, the children are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first snowfall. Each flake that falls creates excitement and anticipation. They can t wait to take out the super sliders and go to their first hockey practice. Hopefully their excitement will rub off on the rest of us. Have a great month! Val Bauml Grade 3/4/5 News October has come and gone and oh what a busy month it was! The highlights of the month were the Hip Hop Hoop Dancers, Open House/Book Fair and an Author Visit from Darwin Riendeau. Believe it or not, in amongst all the fun, we were still able to get some work done! The Grade 3 class is in the midst of their second unit in math on Addition and Subtraction. The Grade 4 class is currently completing their Whole Numbers Unit to and the Grade 5 class has just begun a unit on Multiplication and Division. The students are all working hard and I am pleased to say that each day either Mrs. Gerwing or Mrs. Schreiner is in our math class to offer extra support to the students. I am thrilled with the progress the students have made in their reading this far! The Fountas and Pinnell results were very impressive with many students achieving two or more levels since last spring. Please keep encouraging your child to practice reading each night the benefits are very evident! We will start practicing for the Christmas Concert next week. A more detailed note will be sent home outlining your child s costume needs. Thanks in advance for your assistance. I look forward to seeing you at Parent- Teacher Interviews on November 18 th! Have a great month and an enjoyable long weekend! Bonnie Kolbeck
Lancer Athletics Hello Everybody, Well the busiest time of the athletic calendar is gone just like that! And once again we had many successes! The Junior Girls soccer team took on Cudworth this season in league play. Unfortunately, those were the only two teams that could field a junior girls team this season. The girls played them four times. They started with a pair of losses and then tied them in the third game. The girls continued to get better and ended up winning the fourth game and therefore the league title this season! Great effort girls! Your improvement was very evident! Thank you to Mrs. Kolbeck for coaching once again this year. Also a big thank you to Jessie, Ashley, Laura, and Jocelyn for helping out! The Junior Boys also had a successful season. They played in the Horizon League and after league play was all said and done, the boys came away with a third place finish!! Great job boys! The boys ended their season hosting a threeteam tourney with Muenster and Middle Lake coming here one Friday after school! It was a great way to wrap up the junior soccer season for all three teams. Thank you to Mrs. Korte for organizing that tourney and once again for coaching these boys this season! Also, thank you to Calder and Joel for helping with the coaching duties!! Congrats on a great season! The Cross Country team had yet another hugely successful season. In total, eighteen student athletes came out to run cross country this year. The team practiced hard before taking part in the predistrict meet in Watson. It was here where the team took home first place for the ninth consecutive year with five points. Every runner ran incredibly well and contributed to the team win. Special congrats to Dalton, Jade, Carson Gerwing, JC, and Claire for winning their respective races. The next week saw the team head to Watson once again for the District Championship. Once again, the team did not disappoint as every student ran very well. The team amassed eight points to win the team title their seventh in eight years. Special congrats to Joel, Jade, and Claire for winning their races! Also special congrats to Hanna, Carson Gerwing, Dalton, Calder, Mark, Jade, Carson Voz, Joel, and Jamie for advancing to the SHSAA Provincial Championship in Delisle on October 13 th. The team headed to provincials looking to earn a team medal for the eighth straight year and also to run as well as they possibly could as individuals. After it was all said and done, on a brutally cold day, the team ended up with eighty-six points, which was good enough for a team silver medal in the 1A Category! Great effort once again team! A big thank you to all the graduating members of the cross country team for their time and effort over the years Carson Voz, Madison Kolbeck, Erica Gerwing, Jamie Davis, and Joel Schemenauer. Once again, a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Prodahl for coaching the team this season!! The Sr. Boys soccer team had a fantastic season to say the least. The boys took part in the Horizon League and finished second with a 4-2 win/loss record behind Middle Lake. We had the good fortune of hosting regionals here on October 19 th! The boys defeated St. Brieux 5-0 to advance to the Regional final against Middle Lake. Two days prior Middle Lake soundly defeated our boys 5-2. However, with the boys buying in to a completely new game plan they beat Middle Lake 2-0 to capture the regional title. With the win, the boys were the #1 seed going into provincials, which were held once again, here in Lake Lenore! The boys played Lanigan in Game one and defeated them by an 8-0 score. This advanced them to the semi-final where the boys came up against an old provincial rival, Osler VCA. After dominating the first half and leading 2-0, Osler came out flying and scored three quick goals, to go up 3-2. The score remained the same until Calder Gerwing scored to tie it with five minutes left. With two minutes left Carson Voz then scored the winning goal after a perfectly executed play by the team! This put the boys into the final against the number two seeded team from Middle Lake. The final did not disappoint, as it was a close game once again. Our boys scored early on a goal by Jamie Davis and Middle Lake tied it up on a penalty kick near the end of the first half. The second half was much the same with not a lot of scoring chances until Jamie Davis once again scored with approximately seven minutes remaining to put the boys up 2-1. That s the way it would stay, as the boys would capture the SHSAA 1A Provincial Championship. This game was a total team effort as every member played near flawless defense and stuck to the game plan. The boys did
what they had to do to win, with every team member doing what was best for the team! Congrats boys thanks for buying into the game plan! It paid off for you in a big way! I want to say a big thank you to Cole Lewis, Jamie Davis, Cody Bauml, Carson Voz, and Joel Schemenauer for their years of service towards the soccer team here at Lake Lenore School. Also, thank you to Cole Meyer for helping me out this season on the sidelines! I would like to say a HUGE thank you everyone who came out to support our boys last weekend. The community support was incredible. We had people with no connections to the team, donating food for our booth! Also the crowd for the final on Saturday was very large, which was great to see. You helped provide our boys with an experience they will never forget! Thank you to the officials for all their hard work last weekend as well. Many people worked as linespeople including current students! This was very much appreciated! Thank you to the staff and students here at school for putting up with me while I planned the event and also for the immense amount of help you provided to make this a hugely successful event once again! Thank you to the parents of the boys. The work you put in was such a big help. I did not even have to think about running the concession and the gate as this group of parents took care of every aspect of it for me. Your hard work and support is so very much appreciated. For fear of missing somebody, I did not name names when thanking everyone. I just want you all to know this there is a reason the SHSAA continues to award us hosting duties this reason is the support we get from staff, students, parents, and community members! I truly am thankful for what we have here! On that note we are co-hosting the 1A Boys SHSAA Provincial Volleyball Championship on November 23 rd and 24 th! I will be talking to a lot of you sometime soon I m sure! Curtis Strueby Until next time.go LANCERS!!! P.S. Follow the Lake Lenore Lancers on SHSAA 1A Boys Provincial Volleyball Championship November 23 rd & 24 th Middle Lake School AND Lake Lenore School There will be ten teams from throughout the province coming to Lake Lenore and Middle Lake to take part in this championship!! If you are willing to donate food (either a dessert or soup/chili) or your time (work a shift at the gate or booth) please contact Curtis at school (306) or on his cell at (306) This is the third time in the last ten years we will be co-hosting this event! It has been hugely successful in the past due to the help and support of our school and community members!! Thank you in advance for your continued support!
Library News October has been a very busy month and just like that, it is over! One of the main events in the library in October is the Book Fair and getting ready for it is always a big job. Nevertheless, thanks to my trusty sidekick, Mrs. Haeusler, things got done! As always, she was a huge help to me. So, a big heartfelt Thank you Donna! goes out to you Mrs. Haeusler. As usual, the book fair was a great success. Since we achieved our goal of $1500 in sales, we received about $750 worth of Scholastic books for our library. Thank you to all who supported this very important fundraiser. A special thank you goes out to our corporate sponsors: Affinity Credit Union, Lake Lenore Coop Agro, and Lake Lenore Knights of Columbus, Lake Lenore Coop Grocery, Lake Lenore Lions Club, and Lake Lenore Lioness Club. Your continued support is so important to our school. The new books purchased with the funds from the fair will be on display by the end of November. A donation plate placed in each book will recognize the above sponsors. With Remembrance Day drawing near, I have put a group of books in the library display case as a reminder of how lucky we are to live in a free country, and to help pay tribute to all the veterans who fought for this freedom that we have. Please stop and take a look and feel free to pick up one of the books and read it. They are all very good books and, for the most part, are very short reads. I have several more books in the library that may be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more of Canada s involvement in some of the great historic wars as well as some of the more currant wars. I would be happy to assist anyone in finding these books. As always, I look forward to your visits. Until then... Happy reading, Mrs. Brinkman
