This Annual report is part of our effort to communicate how we measure and actively promote the benefits of parks and recreation services, including economic development benefits. Each member of the Recreation Board is extremely proud of the achievements and efforts of the hard working staff as well as our participants. 4

5 We are excited about Recreational opportunities and successes. This year our department improved in several areas that include communication, brochures and budget as well as recruitment and retention of quality staff both part time and full time. Some of the highlights from 2005 are as follows: Repainted pavilions and concession stands county wide, Increased the number of youth and adult tournaments, Built the Sunshine League Complex, Built an 18 hole Disc Golf Course, Resurfaced tennis courts at Richard Craig Park. Some other highlights of the year were funded by SPLOST and these include the following: Began to build J.P. Moseley Park Activity Building We coordinated park projects for Hands on Henry in conjunction with Spruce Up Henry. We welcomed several volunteers such as United Way and the Scouts. Our department acquired sponsorships in order to bid on tournaments to increase tourism and the economic benefits for Henry County. In 2005, our department increased visibility by participating in the following events: Henry County Fair, Special Populations Day at the Fair, free Movie Under the Stars, Fall Festival, free Tennis Clinic, Atlanta Motor Speedway Legends Race, Truett s Grill Back to School Blast, Special Olympic Softball Invitational, and A Friend s House. Our department addressed the need for vehicles and was given some relief in that area. We were given a design for a community center and created a Master Plan for vision and planning. Additional land was acquired at J.P. Moseley, Richard Craig and Hidden Valley Parks. 5

6 Goals for Henry County Parks and Recreation include the following: Hidden Valley Park add skate area and playground. Richard Craig Park add baseball fields. North Forty Park add playground. North Mt. Carmel Park add 8 softball fields for adults and youth tournaments and playground. Sandy Ridge Park add 3 softball fields and a concession/restroom stand. Warren Holder Park add football complex to new addition of park. J.P. Moseley Park recreation center under construction and add a football complex. Henry County Soccer Complex add playground. Fairview Road Property acquire land for entrance to park. Identify future park land in Kellytown area. 6

7 Our maintenance crew currently services 19 parks, 802 acres, and 88 athletic fields along with 15 walking tracks, 48 restrooms, 20 tennis courts, 12 basketball courts and 20 playgrounds. Each park is serviced every week, which includes the following: Mowing, Weed eating/trimming, Spraying weed control, Empty trash cans and pick up trash, Spread pine straw, Spread infield mix on baseball/softball fields, Top dress and aerate football and soccer fields, Replace mulch in each playground once a year, Clean restrooms, and Blow off walking tracks, pavilions and parking lots We also check basketball goals and nets and tennis court nets, playground equipment for safety. We also keep pine straw/mulch in beds and around trees as needed and keep trees pruned. Some special projects that took place in the parks this year included: Built the Sunshine League Complex, Built 4 new baseball fields at Richard Craig Park (1-9/10 field, 2-5/6 field, and 1-3/4 field), Painted interior and exterior of all park buildings and pavilions, Sandy Ridge BMX installed new playground, and Sod projects: Sandy Ridge Park 13/14 baseball infield North Forty Park around baseball fields and concession stand Heritage Park next to service road going to softball fields 7

11 The Grounds Department has paid numerous visits to the 27 designated facilities for maintenance. The practices demonstrated at each of those facilities occur once a week and are as follows: Weeding Edging Weed Control Trash Removal Mowing Blowing Selective Pruning In addition to the routine maintenance, we were able to place pine straw or mulch at each facility, design and create new bedding areas, as well as, take on several large projects. Those projects include: Christmas trail and décor, Halloween trail and prop construction, Took over 2 new buildings: Locust Grove Library and Department of Motor Vehicle Services, Laid sod around new jail fencing and leveled dirt, Rebuilt pavilion area at Administration Building, Assisted with Sunshine Field and new Richard Craig Baseball Fields, Edged all bedding at each facility, Landscaped at the Animal Control Building, and Took over chemical and fertilizer program. 11

13 Volleyball The Recreation Department had approximately 120 players to participate in volleyball. Volleyball games were played in a local church gym. Flag Football The Recreation Department had 360 players to participate in flag football. There were a total of 8 teams and three of those teams went on to District and one won District and one came in second. Both of those teams went to State. Flag football games were played at Avalon Park. Basketball The Recreation Department had 1395 players to participate in four leagues. There were a total of 15 teams. Basketball games were played in a church gym. 3 teams went on to participate in District. Softball This year the Recreation Department had two seasons of adult softball. Within the spring season there were a total of 8,848 participants in six different leagues. In the fall season, there were a total of 2,490 participants in four different leagues. Three teams went to participate in District. Softball games were held at Heritage Park. Friday Night One Pitch The department held 1 Friday Night One Pitch Tournament with a total of 165 people participating in this tournament. Friday Night One Pitch tournament was held at Heritage Park to benefit A Friend s House and Connecting Henry s Christmas Programs. Field Rental and Tournament Youth baseball and softball and adult softball were held in 3 different parks. Tournaments give a boost to the local economy by filling up hotels, restaurants and shopping. There were a total of 15,043 participants that were involved in these tournaments. 13

16 Baseball There were a total of 3,877 participants that were involved in 341 teams throughout the county over the spring and fall seasons. Baseball was played in the following parks: Big Springs, Richard Craig, Cochran, North Ola, North Forty, Warren Holder, Sandy Ridge and Hidden Valley. McDonough Youth Baseball hosted the World Series for the fifth year in a row. Softball There were a total of 1,248 participants that were involved in 101 teams throughout the county over the spring and fall seasons. Softball was played in the following parks: Alexander, J.P. Moseley, Hidden Valley, North Forty, Warren Holder and Ola 81. Football There were a total of 1,606 participants that were involved in 98 teams throughout the McDonough, North Henry and Locust Grove communities. The following parks were the host of these games: Avalon, Warren Holder and Mickie D. Cochran. Cheerleading There were a total of 733 participants that were involved in 61 teams throughout the McDonough, North Henry and Locust Grove communities. The following parks were the host of these games: Avalon, Warren Holder and Mickie D. Cochran. Soccer There were a total of 2,133 participants that were involved in 226 teams for the spring and fall seasons. Soccer was played at the Henry County Soccer Complex, Mt. Carmel and private fields at Vulcan Materials. BMX There were a total of 3,400 participants that participated in 34 races. All races were held at the Sandy Ridge Park. Basketball There were a total of 1,620 participants that were involved in 162 teams throughout the county. Basketball games and practices were held in the surrounding county school gyms. Track & Field There were a total of 100 participants that were involved in track. They participated in 5 track meets and also District. This year, HCRD hosted the District track meet at Union Grove High School. Swimming There were a total of 82 participants that were involved in swimming. These participants participated in District as well as State. 16

19 Step Aerobics Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights at Wesley Lakes Elementary, East Lake Elementary or Austin Road Elementary Schools, there is step aerobics taking place. All of these classes combined had a total of 1909 men and women who participated in this type of exercise. Yoga Monday nights at Wesley Lakes Elementary School is were yoga took place this year. During this year there were 161 people who took advantage in this exercise. Line Dancing This activity took place at the Windy Hill Activity Building on Tuesday and Thursday nights. There were a total of 1392 people who participated in this program. Karate On Monday and Wednesday nights you will find karate going on in the Windy Hill Activity Building. This program had a total of 219 participants. Dog Obedience On Wednesday nights you will find dogs and their owners learning how to be obedient. There were a total of 117 people and their dogs that attended this program. Baton Georgia s Youth On Parade held baton and pom pom classes in the Windy Hill Activity Building and at Stockbridge Elementary School on Monday and Wednesday nights. There were a total of 943 girls that participated in these classes. These girls also had the opportunity to march in the McDonough and Forest Park Christmas Parades. Tennis We had a huge success for tennis lessons this year. There were a total of 920 students that participated in tennis lessons over the spring, summer and fall. All classes were held at the Richard Craig Park Tennis Complex. Clogging On Thursday evenings at the Windy Hill Activity Building, you will find some very loud dancing taking place. This type of dance is called clogging. This year there were 66 children and adults who took this class. Day Camp This was the first year for Summer Day Camp. The camp was for six weeks and was full each week with children ages In addition to the summer we also hosted a Fall Day Camp. The two camps combined gave the department 1847 participants. Kindermusik A new class called Kindermusik began this year. This class is for children ages birth to 5 years old and their parents to learn different types of music and rhythms. There were 214 participants in this class. Golf This year HCRD began golf lessons for children and adults. These lessons were seven weeks long and were huge success for the first year. There were 260 participants in these lessons. Square Dancing This class was for 23 weeks and there were 122 participants for this class. Abrakadoodle This was the first year for this class for children. This class taught children how to explore with art. There were a total of 10 participants in this class. 19

22 Hands On Henry On April 16, 2005, there were approximately 1,000 people who showed up to volunteer to help clean up and repaint some of the parks buildings. Jac Roth Tennis Clinic This year marked the 5 th year to hold this event. This is a free event and opened to anyone who wished to learn more about the game of tennis. There were 100 people who came to Richard Craig Park Tennis Complex to learn. This clinic took place on August 13, Movie Under the Stars On May 21, 2005, HCRD showed Shark Tales at Avalon Park and on September 10, 2005 the Henry County Recreation Department with Star 94 hosted Movies Under the Stars. This event took place at the Henry County Soccer Complex and the movie was Shrek 2. There were approximately 1,850 people that showed up for both events. Georgia Independence Day Festival On July 3 and 4, 2005, HCRD hosted an Independence Day Festival that included crafts and men and women dressed in period attire. These people showed 3,000 the people what it was like in 1776 when Georgia first found out about the Declaration of Independence being signed. A huge fireworks show highlighted each evening. Dizzy Dean World Series July 14 18, 2005, HCRD hosted the 7 year old Dizzy Dean World Series. This tournament brought 3,675 players plus parents to the county and played in Heritage and J.P. Moseley Parks. ISA World Series July 20 26, 2005, Henry, Newton and Rockdale Counties hosted the ISA Fastpitch Softball World Series. This tournament brought 6,300 teams to the county and played in Heritage, J.P. Moseley and Windy Hill Parks as well as in the other two counties. Heritage Park Fall Festival On October 22, 2005, the Recreation Department, Henry County Community Gardens and Henry County Humane Society put together a Fall Festival. This event took place at Heritage Park and there were approximately 7,000 people that came for arts and crafts, food and entertainment. There was a children s and pet costume contests as well as trick or treat around the Village. Haunted Trail October 20 22, 2005, HCRD spooked a trail at Heritage Park for the 500 people to walk if they dared. Christmas Program On December 3, 2005, HCRD hosted a Christmas Program at Heritage Park. There were Christmas crafts for children to make, face painting, signing Christmas Banners for Georgia Troops oversees, Santa Sleigh Ride, Santa pictures, entertainment and a trackless train. At the end of evening, the Historic Village was lit as well as the 25 foot Christmas tree that was donated for the event. There were about 3,000 people that came out to get in the Christmas Spirit. Breakfast with Santa On December 10, 2005, Santa visited and had breakfast with 30 children and their parents. Santa arrived on a Fire Truck and took some time out of his busy schedule to take pictures with each child. The children also share their Christmas list with Santa. 22

25 Special Olympics - The Henry County Special Olympics again had a successful year and won many more medals. In terms of participation, fun and the implementation of new athletes we were very successful. We added 15 new athletes. Two Henry County Hurricane Basketball Teams and one Hurricane Basketball Skills Team participated in the 2005 State Winter Games January in Marietta, GA. We also had a Fans in the Stands group who cheered our teams to victory. The Special Olympic State Summer Games were held June 3 5 at Emory University in Atlanta. Henry County brought one unified and one traditional volleyball team to the competition. We also had athletes who competed in Athletics (track and field), Aquatics and Tennis. Our 2005 Special Olympic Softball Invitational at Heritage Park went great. We had 30 teams for a total of approximately 800 athletes. Both of our Henry County Softball teams did a great job. The Big Dogs brought home the gold and our Funky Dogs took the silver. The Henry County Softball Teams and Rolling Thunder Bocce Teams participated in the State Fall Games on October 7 9 in Albany, GA. The Big Dogs brought home the bronze medal and Funky Dogs brought home a fifth place ribbon. All of the Bocce Teams, which consisted of one traditional and two unified teams, also received medals. Circle of Friends - The Circle of Friends group continues to grow. They attend outings and special events throughout the year. Among events attended in 2005 were a Georgia Force game, Cosmic Bowling at Fun Bowl and a Holiday Party at Pilgreen s. The annual formal, the biggest and most expensive event of the year, was held at the Cotton Fields Golf and Country Club. Over 150 participants dressed in their finest, ate and danced the night away. To make the night extra special they rode to the event in a limo. Blaze Sports - We are providing a wheelchair tennis team through Blaze Sports. The team is doing a great job and has participated in several tournaments and brought home several gold medals and trophies. Special Population Day - Over 400 students, athletes and volunteers attended the Special Population Day at the Henry County Fair. This event, sponsored by the McDonough Kiwanis Club, Special Olympics and the Recreation Department, continues to grow each year. Fundraisers - The Southern Cruisers held a car show fundraiser to help raise money for our S.O. program. They raised over $2,000.00, which will be used for travel, uniforms, and equipment. They also donated $ at our annual Christmas Party. The Henry County Special Olympics Program also raised money with a Coca-Cola fundraiser which brought in approximately $1, for the program. Share the Joy Day was held on December 3, This fundraiser brought in over $3, in one day. Needs - The T.R. Department is in dire need of an SUV or fifteen-passenger van with a lift to transport wheelchair athletes to various sporting events. In view of the fact that the average wheelchair for basketball cost $ $2500 and the costs for travel, i.e. motels, meals, etc. is very expensive; we are requesting as much money as possible initially to cover these expenses. 25
