The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department was very successful in the year The department had several new park improvements, new programs both in the athletic and non athletic sections and in the Therapeutic section of the department. ADMINISTRATION The Recreation Department renovated the former Worth property into what is now known as the Fairview Activity Center. The twelve tennis courts that are located at the Richard Craig Park were also renovated. New playgrounds were installed at the following parks: North Forty, Hidden Valley, Soccer Complex and N. Mt. Carmel. The Department also had a ground breaking ceremony for the new football complex at Warren Holder Park that includes a new access road crossing the creek, two new football fields, two multipurpose fields and more parking and football fields at J.P. Moseley Park. There were several Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies that were held throughout the year including; the N. Mt. Carmel Park Dutchtown Playground and the Fairview Activity Center. The county s skate board park was completed at Hidden Valley Park in Fairview. It features two 20 foot long quarter pipes, a five sided transfer box and grind rails with a heavy street influence. Funding was secured and the County began work on the design of the Recreation and Extension Service Administration and Classroom facility to be located at Heritage Park. Funding was also secured for athletic field lighting system upgrades to meet industry standards. This will allow for field lighting to be controlled through computers. Funds were approved to relocate, construct and light 3 softball fields from Franklin Rape Park to Sandy Ridge Park. The Department of Transportation assisted with restriping the parking lots at Cochran, North Forty and Hidden Valley Parks. The new Paintball Complex which is located at Windy Hill Park opened in April of 2006 is the 2 nd Extreme

Sport that is offered in the county and Henry County Parks and Recreation became one of the first recreation departments in the southeast to open and run a Paintball Facility. It s outdoors, fast, easy, and it s a team building activity. Two virtually unplayable softball fields on top of a landfill were replaced with paintball fields. The complex was built inhouse. It was completed for about 20% of what it would have been if a company had been hired to build the complex. The department has set its sights on hosting tournaments and reaping the rewards of increasing tourism. The J.P. Moseley Recreation Center opened in October and is the first county owned gymnasium with four classrooms and a community room. The Department recognized some people who have volunteered their time and efforts to the Department at the United Way Banquet. Henry County Parks and Recreation was awarded two awards from the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association for Volunteer of the Year and the Nash Farm Battlefield property.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION The Recreation Department hired a new Therapeutic Coordinator to begin in The Therapeutic division consists of: Special Olympics trainings/competitions, Social outings with Circle of Friends group, fundraisers, public relations, and Blaze Sports. The Therapeutic section attended State Special Olympic Indoor Winter Games in Cobb County in January. There were fifty-five athletes, coaches and volunteers that participated in Team Skills and Team Basketball. Also, the department took ten athletes and chaperones to Boone, North Carolina for a weekend of Alpine Skiing in February. During the month of March and April, the department was busy getting ready for Summer Games at Emory University and Volleyball Invitational. There were seventy athletes, partners and volunteers. The sports included Volleyball, Aquatics, Athletics and Soccer.

The Unified Volleyball team was chosen to attend a National tournament in New Orleans. Special Olympics Georgia held the 1 st Annual Athlete Congress at the State Capitol, and three of our Henry County athletes were chosen to attend. The Master s bowling tournament was held in July and thirty athletes attended this competition. Athletes began practicing for Fall Games which includes Softball and Bocce teams. Over 70 athletes and coaches attended Fall Games in Albany, Georgia. Several warm-up invitationals were held with Henry County traveling to Cobb County and Camille and bringing back several 1 st and 2 nd finishes. This year, Henry County participated in Southeast Sailing for the first time in Macon, Georgia. One athlete and partner attended a competition in Mobile, Alabama. Through Special Olympics Georgia, athletes attended an Atlanta Hawks games, Atlanta Braves clinic, and an Atlanta Falcons clinic. A Sports Banquet was held for all Special Olympics athletes to honor all their accomplishments. Each month the Therapeutic division provides programs and activities for the Circle of Friends group which includes athletes/clients with special needs. The members were able to put on their best outfits to attend the Formal held at the Hazlehurst House. Also, members enjoyed a Valentine s Dance, attended the Grease play, took a trip to Stone Mountain, and enjoyed a pool party and a nice day at the lake. The year ended with Holiday shopping, Magical Night of Lights at Lake Lanier and a Christmas party. The Therapeutic staff began an arts and crafts and a chair aerobics program at the Henry County Disability Center. The Therapeutic division was very busy in programs and activities to gain public awareness this year. Our Special Olympics athletes had their debut on the sports channel for two weeks. Our Blaze program was also on public radio and television this year. The Therapeutic staff participated in Exceptional Children s week, participated in the

Sunshine League Opening Day, Relay for Life and the Geranium Festival. The Therapeutic division also started a new club called Community Outreach Club, in which the special needs adults learn to give back to their community that continues to support them. In October, teddy bears were donated to the Fire Stations to go on the back of the trucks so that the little ones picked up in emergency situations could be comforted by a furry friend. In November we collected cans for a local food shelter. In December we collected toys to help needy families in our community. To end the year on a good note, our Special Olympics program took first place in the McDonough and Hampton Christmas Parades. Our Special Olympics and Blaze programs received donations from Summit Car Show, Jim Mora Foundation, Home Depot, Shriner s Club, Wal-Mart and the Atlanta Motor Speedway Children s Charities. Awards were received for the Youth Volunteer for the Year, Unified Partner of the Year, and Athlete of the Year through Special Olympics Georgia. Also, the Therapeutic Coordinator received the Therapeutic Recreation Professional of the Year by the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association and one of our long time volunteers received the Volunteer of the Year Award. Our Henry County Blaze Wheelchair program became one of the largest in the state under the leadership of a new Therapeutic Assistant this year. The wheelchair tennis program has grown to 10 athletes. Sports that are provided are soccer, tennis and basketball. The Blaze program was awarded the 2006 USTA Program of Year, through the state tennis association. The Therapeutic division relies a great deal on volunteers and we could not provide such a successful program without the much needed help.

RECREATION PROGRAMS In the Programming section of the Henry County Parks and Recreation Department, they held Day Camp for the Mid-Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall school breaks. This summer the Day Camp Program had two locations, Wesley Lakes Elementary School in McDonough and Fairview Activity Center in Fairview. All the children that attended were given the opportunity to take advantage of the free lunch program that was offered to the Summer Day Camp program. The Community Growth Enterprises Corporation sponsored the free lunch program. Pre packaged lunches were delivered to each site this summer daily. Each week offered a new an exciting field trip that included; the Yellow River Game Ranch, Atlanta Beach, Atlanta Braves game, Aquarium, and the World of Coke. During the Fall Break Camp in September, we opened a third location; J.P. Moseley Recreation Center in Stockbridge. The Georgia Parks and Recreation Association held a Day Camp Workshop and a Beyond the Basics Workshop that the Program Coordinator attends. The Department distributed 20,000 flyers twice a year to all elementary schools that advertised all of the Department s Spring and Summer, Fall and Winter Activities. In October, the Programming section began the Afterschool Academic Enrichment Program in two locations; J.P. Moseley Recreation Center in Stockbridge and Fairview Activity Center in Fairview. The Henry County School Transportation provides the program with transportation from elementary schools to these two locations. With the new two Recreation Centers in the County, the Programming section has plans to increase the amount of classes in conjunction with the programs that are already in place, to include a variety of interest for the citizens of the county. With Day Camp and the

Afterschool programs, they intend to increase the number of participants as well as expand locations to serve all of Henry County. There were two free outdoor movies; one in McDonough and the other one in Locust Grove. Other Special Events that the Department participated in were National Night Out in McDonough and the Locust Grove Days Festival. In July, the Department hosted two huge events. Thousands of people visited the Georgia Independence Day Festival at Nash Farm Battlefield. This festival was two days

and included actors that portrayed people that lived in the year 1776 and first hearing of America gaining its independence from the British. There were activities for the children, arts and crafts, food and entertainment all day long. The highlight of the each day was the biggest fireworks display in Henry County. Also in July, the Department hosted the 7 and 11 year old Dizzy Dean World Series in three of its parks. This baseball tournament brought children and their families from several of the southern states. Opening ceremonies were held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway were the baseball teams were paraded out on the track. Henry County saved the 204 acre Nash Farm Battlefield that marked the site of the largest cavalry raid in Georgia s history and a huge confederate campsite. Nash Farm Battlefield represents a step back in time to the final chapter of the Atlanta Campaign. A cotillion ball and dedication ceremony was held. During this dedication, which was held on the 142 nd anniversary of Kilpatrick s Raid, Civil War re-enactors participated in skirmish, cavalry, infantry and artillery demonstrations. Settlers offered a living history exhibit. In September, the Department hosted its First Annual Golf Tournament at Georgia National Golf Club. This tournament was to raise sponsorship money for our Special Events. This allows the Department to keep cost low for families who attend these events. In October, there were two events that were offered to the citizens of the County. The first was the 3 rd Annual Fall Festival held at the Heritage Park. This included arts and crafts, food and entertainment all day long. We held our annual costume contest and trick or treating around the village. This is a free admission festival with most events free for participants. The second event was the Department s Annual Haunted Trail; Terror

on Heritage Hill. This trail walks you through scenes of everything from clowns to witches and ended with a scene from Chainsaw Massacre. The Department also had time to help the Chamber of Commerce with their Arts Festival and held a tour for potential tournament directors with the CVB. Henry County held a County Employee Sports Challenge at Windy Hill Park in which the Recreation team pulled off a victory. The team also participated in a Paintball Competition with other County employees. Another free admission festival that Henry County Parks and Recreation Department held was the Christmas Festival in December at Heritage Park. Here families were asked to bring an unwrapped toy to place at the Christmas Tree to be given later to charities such as A Friend s House and Connecting Henry. This festival offered cookie decorating, Santa pictures, train rides, food, entertainment and hay ride to see scenes of Christmas. The festival ends the evening with the lighting of the village and the Christmas Tree. Tournaments and Special Events are good for our community. Hotels and restaurants are major benefactors of the events economic impact. Tournaments and events not only showcase the county, but also utilize our parks which are investments made by the county for the community and our local players. The department works closely with McDonough and the Henry County Convention Visitors Bureau (CVB) enlisting a formula that includes the number of players and coaches as well as the length and an average dollar amount expected to be spent by each. Henry County CVB estimated the World Series generated nearly $4 million for the local economy. Baseball, soccer, softball and football tournaments were held.

VISIBILITY and SPONSORSHIPS In March 2006, the Henry County Parks and Recreation Department created a sponsorship program for scholarships and special events held throughout the County. We created a sponsorship form for the 10 events and activities planned for 2006 and placed them in a presentation folder with pens and information on each event. Sponsorships begin at $275 for a single event and increase through $2,000 to sponsor all 10 events; we have collected over $8,000 since we began the program. For each sponsorship level companies will receive incentives such as advertisements in Recreation literature and reports, promotional materials and signage, passes to events and much more. A grant was awarded for wheelchair sport programs and funds were raised for Recreation Scholarships for camps. On April 15, 2006, the Henry County Parks and Recreation Department set up a booth at the Henry County Administration Building for National Association for Counties (NACo). We served Italian Ice, set up a T-Ball Inflatable for the children and handed out information and promotional items to participants throughout the day. On August 1 st, 2006, Henry County Parks and Recreation Department participated in the National Night Out sponsored by the Henry County Police Department. This event allows county residents to come out and see Fire Trucks, Police vehicles, have a taste test of local restaurants and receive several promotional items from several other businesses. This event was held in the parking lot of Target and there were several hundred of people and children there. On Saturday, November 11 th, 2006, the Parks and Recreation Department also participated in the Stockbridge Community Church s Health Fair. We had an

information booth set up for the public and promotional items that were given away. There were over 200 people that came out to see this fair. ATHELTICS Under the Athletic section of the Department, sports for both youth and adults were offered. Adults were offered softball, basketball, flag football and volleyball; youth were offered track and basketball. The Recreation Department registered 1,325 children for basketball and sent six teams for the first time to the Georgia Parks and Recreation 6 th District Tournament. The youth track team participated in three track meets before heading to the Georgia Parks and Recreation 6 th District and State Tournaments. On the District level of competition there were 72 children that qualified and 25 for state level. 110 children with 80 parents participated in the Track and Field Banquet. During the summer youth had the opportunity to take part in a basketball camp. This was a week long camp that had 55 children to participate. Adult softball had 81teams that played in the spring and two teams went to the Georgia Parks and Recreation 6 th District Tournament and won First Place and then competed in the State Tournament and won Second Place. Flag Football had six teams in which two teams also competed in the District Level where one team won First Place and also won at the State Level. There were 14 teams that participated in the adult basketball league. Two one-pitch tournaments took place in October. One was the Annual Christmas Toy Drive in which toys were given to A Friend s House and Connecting Henry. The second one was the Halloween Havoc, where teams donated bags of candy for the trick or treating around the village during the Fall Festival. Players were asked to dress in Halloween costumes and to make the games more interesting; teams would run the bases backwards and were allowed pumpkin picks that would help the team win.
