That s right I said people, that means each and every one of you that are members of RRC HOG that were in attendance made this I just wanted to give a big thank you to all who attended the membership mixer and the first chapter meeting of And, of course, we can t forget Bryan and everyone at TNT who always help make the meetings a success ~ thanks! 4 Page 4 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group Start Thinking Warm Weather? What s in Your Planner Jim Wolf - Road Captain I am sure by this time every year; you have heard it a zillion times, when is the warm weather coming Even though we are still in February, ride planning has begun. If you are like most of us, the ride planning never really takes a winter break. Every time I open a magazine, or turn on the TV, I see a picture of a road I would like to be riding on. So, as I sit in my warm house, after checking on my two-wheeled friend in the barn, my list of places to ride starts to grow. Here is what I have in mind, for HOG chapter rides. The All Harley Drags in St. Louis, and the Illinois state HOG rally in Effingham, both in mid-april. Let us not forget the Harley Davidson 105th, and HOG 25th events in Milwaukee this summer. 5 Volume 20, Issue 2 Page 5 Rear View Mirror Mike Fleetwood Historian One of the things that still bring me pleasure through my membership and active attendance within River Roads HOG is watching and welcoming our new members. Recently at our Membership Mixer I saw many new faces, which is often difficult because I know no stranger. I was very impressed with the planning and effort that went into this event. The rejoining and recruiting membership through this event has evolved into a great time. To all that helped with the event Thank You I had a great time! As Historian I reflect on past practices and strategies to increase our membership and make friends. Many people comment to me that I seem to know everyone. When we are out it is a joke among my family and friends that I can t go anywhere without knowing somebody. That is an effort that I am proud of. We have had some very cute jokes related to the biker wave but years ago the wave represented an acknowledgement that people on bikes shared the same love and passion for motorcycling that we do. There was always the common bond between motorcyclists because we dealt with the same prejudices, road dangers, weather difficulties and overall lifestyle which made us brothers and sisters. I often would see people out riding that I hadn t seen at a HOG or ABATE Meetings. I would follow them until they stopped at a gas station or a bar so that I could make a special personal invitation to attend our functions. I would also approach strangers at TNT and ask if they knew about River Roads Chapter. We would invite them to a meeting and tell them we would save them a seat so they would know that if they showed up they would be comfortable and welcome. How many of us still do that today? How many of us make a special effort to sit with new members or to invite them to sit with us? Another way we interested potential new members was through a simple Picture Album. TNT had a picture album on a pedestal at the dealership. This picture album was full of posters and pictures from our event. The pictures were mostly of us having fun and enjoying each others company. This painted a clear view of what we were about, getting together, riding and having fun. In this high tech new world of and cell phones let us not forget that it is companionship with people whom share your passion and good times that has gotten us here and will keep us growing. Trivi a Question: What year did River Roads HOG Chapter start moving their monthly meetings and start having them at the dealership? Please send your rsponses to mfleet@adams.net Harley-Davidson has announced the dates of it s 105th Anniversary and also HOG s 25th anniversary party. August at Milwaukee, WI. Trivial Pursuit Milwaukee or Bust A lot of great entertainment such as Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, and the E Street Band, Buddy Guy, Puddle of Mud, ZZ Top, just to name a few. For the complete list go to harleydavidson.com and check out the events scheduled for that weekend. Don t miss a great time.

6 Page 6 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group Think Safety- Be Safe!! The Safety Corner John Deemer- Safety Officer. I would like to say a few words about what clothing we wear when we ride as it relates to safety. If you will recall when and if you took a riders course to get your motorcycle license, some type of safety clothing was required. They are shoes above the ankle, long sleeve shirt or jacket, full fingered gloves, helmet and full length jeans. Why in the world would you want or need to wear something like those items many riders may ask. It is simple, they are trying to cut down on injuries. The biggest safety item other than the rider is the helmet and probably the least popular. While I always wear a helmet and always have, a lot do not and that is their choice. However, it can save your life. I have yet to see a sanctioned race where all the drivers or riders do not wear helmets. I can t find any data that says wearing a helmet while riding is dangerous or a real case of a broken neck caused by a helmet. Just a lot that says if they had had one on the head injury would not have been as bad. The gloves are a pretty obvious thing. They can be hot in the summer, but are pretty good about keeping the skin on your hands as you slide on the ground. They also can help keeping the machine vibrations from bothering you. I wear gloves with gel pads in the palms and it does help a lot. I don t get why someone would wear sandals or flip flops while riding a motorcycle. I would leave one or both at the first stop sign. The asphalt is hot in the summer and my feet would rather not touch it. The long pants while will help protect you from the asphalt as you may skid across. They also help keep the heat off the legs. I can think of at least twice while on trips with the c hapter, riders hav e dropped there bikes and been caught underneath and not hurt because of the shoes and long pants. Venora and I stopped at a dealership in Ohio last year and they had two jackets on display that were light armored ones. The story is a couple on a Ultra was merging on the interstate and a car pulled into them, tore the bike up but the walked away due to helmets, and these armored jackets. Remember: to join River Roads HOG Chapter 0912, you must first be a current National HOG Member. Getting anxious for warm temps? On a recent Friday afternoon while I was out and about (and all bundled up fighting the 20 degree temperature which seemed all the colder due to a brisk wind), I thoug ht I heard a motorcycle. Sure enough, as I conti nued to search in the direction of that unmistakable sound, I spotted the brave rider heading north on 8th Street. He was soon out of sight, so I didn't g et a good look at the rider or the bike, but it appeared to be around a 600cc model of some sort. "Man," I thought, "that really takes moxie to ride in weather like this." Assistant Director Rich Keppner later he came back the other way. This time I observed him from inside the house while standing by the window next to my roaring fireplace. As for me, I am not that brave or crazy or desperate (whichever one fits). For now, my iron steed feeds contentedly on the trickle charger in the relative warmth of my garage ready to hit the roads once the weather does warm up. If we should get one of those days, as we did a few weeks ago, give me a call and lets get out there to chase away the wi nter blues. Keep in mind some up-coming events: T he Wide Open Motorcycle Magazi ne Bike Show in St. Louis on Feb 9-10th. More info at wideopenmag.net or call The next RRC/HOG Chapter meeting will be at Sprouts in Quincy on 02/06, and looking far ahead, the HOG Illinois State Rally will be in Effi ngham on June 6th and 7 th. Rich But less than twenty- four hours later, that incredulous rider was out-done. On Saturday afternoon with the temperature hovering in the single digit rang e, as I rushed out of my front door to retrieve the mail from the box at the curb, I once again heard what appeared to be an approaching motorcycle. Soon a rider. maybe the same rider from the day before, came puttering east on Harrison between 36th and 48th. And as if to let me know that he was truly out there riding, about fifteen minutes
