3 Season

4 President s message Welcome to the culmination of what I believe has been one of our most successful seasons in many years for the club. While our numbers have declined from our all-time high of more than 290 (post the 2012 Olympics) to around 240, it has meant we have been able to run both effective and efficient programs that keep our athletes busy. I believe a lot of the success we have achieved during the season has been down to our hard-working committee and coaches, the age group coordinators, and the attitude and commitment of our athletes. In previous years one of our bugbears was the unwillingness of parents as a whole to become involved, in part due to being unsure as to what to do. This has definitely not been the case this year. As one of the executive stated a week or so before the end of the season, we have never had a more active parent group, something that gives us all a great deal of pleasure. We have also seen an excellent season weather-wise, with only one club meet cancelled due to rain and that was a tight decision made only at 8.30 am when we were all but set up. I would like to publically acknowledge the sensational efforts of the following committee members: Lucy Boom Lucy as Registrar is someone who does an enormous amount of work behind the scenes. Until you have been involved in the running of the club you do not appreciate how much work she does in not only ensuring the registrations are accurate but also in recording athletes performances each week. This year Lucy has been ably supported by Sarah Dunn who has helped with the recording of results, and this support has been most welcome by Lucy. Lucy is also always actively involved on Saturdays looking after the committee table and helping with timekeeping. Lucy has indicated she will be stepping down this year and we will no doubt miss her incredible energy and high levels of common sense. Ingrid Takken Vice President. While I hog the limelight every Saturday morning, Ingrid prefers to stay in the background; but you can be sure she is heavily involved in the success of our club. Ingrid is always happy to help, whether it be attending ACTLAA meetings, helping set up on each Saturday morning, timekeeping, assisting other committee members when they are under the pump, assisting in managing the carnivals and championships and on and on. Giles Lamb Treasurer. Giles took over the position this season and has been very diligent in keeping me and the committee up to date on our finances. Giles has also been our co-ordinator of the timekeeping (which is such an important role in keeping our Saturday morning meets running smoothly) and enjoyed taking on On-Track one Saturday morning. Sharon Blandy Secretary. This was one position that was always going to be tough to fill with Nerys finishing up after 5 years in the job. Sharon definitely has her training wheels off now and she is actively involved in just about anything that needs doing. Now all we have to do is stop her paid job flying her around the country so she can focus on her real job (ha ha). Sharon coordinates all the committee meetings and is also actively involved each Saturday. While not on the executive the following committee members have played a key role in the running of the club and their contributions should also be acknowledged: Catherine Brady, Website Manager. Cathy does an incredible job keeping our website up to date. Often I receive something from the Association and am about to ask Cathy to put it up, but before I get a chance to, it has already been done. If you ever need to know anything about the club the website is truly the place to go. Bernard Nutt, Equipment Officer and our representative as Equipment Officer at the ACTLAA events at the AIS. Ming Yung, BBQ Manager and general committee (more about Ming later). Geoff Griffiths, First Aid Officer (fortunately having a very quiet year this year) and part-time starter. Sarah-Louise Owens, Awards. Francis Crimmins, Carnivals Manager. Selina and David Canavan, Publications. The culmination of their efforts is our yearbook which comes together in a very short but intense period of time. David is also one of our key starters.

5 We, as a committee, have been very conscious of the need to provide an environment that encourages good sportsmanship, supporting each other at all levels, and balancing the competitive nature of Little Athletics with having a go, having fun and achieving personal bests. Under the tutelage of our wonderful Head Coach John Hunt and Assistant Coach Ming Yung, we had a regular group of between 20 and 30 athletes each Monday and Thursday who took advantage of John and Ming s experience and dedication to improve the performances of athletes. The results of this training were there for all to see at the ACT Championships with 37 medals gained and quite a few club records being broken as well as many, many PBs achieved throughout the season. John s commitment to the sport is unparalleled, especially remembering that he has no children still involved in LA and he is always one of the first to Dickson each Saturday to help set up. Supporting John and Ming at training we had Ingrid, Ruud and Rainer. While on Ruud, his contribution to the club is enormous. Last year s winner of the John Hunt Award has continued to contribute to the success of the club, managing the On-Track Program (ably assisted by Melissa Lawrence). He also acted as our club representative as the Championship Manager at the ACTLAA championships, Assistant Manager at the Northside Regional Championships and Relay Carnival, and Carnival Manager for the Multi-event (each demanding and largely thankless tasks). He spent hours marking out the hurdles positioning each time that came around, and together with Ingrid, was always one of the first that turned up on Saturdays to help set up. To all the parents that have been actively involved this season, thank you so much. From those parents who stepped up and acted as age-group coordinators on a regular basis, to those who regularly helped on the BBQ and setting up and putting things away each week, and to those who went above and beyond the call of duty at the ACTLAA carnivals and championships, a big thank you! While I believe the season has gone very well, it only sets a benchmark that we will want to exceed again next year. While we expected a drop off of members this year, we would at least like maintain if not increase that number slightly next year. Other challenges include increasing the numbers of male athletes in the older age groups. And on the older age groups, I am particularly excited to see the girls age group that I used to manage many years ago reach Seniors next year. This group, together with those already there, will ensure our seniors group will be at the strongest it has been for a long time. The biggest thanks must, however, go to our very special group of athletes. We, as a committee, are absolutely delighted with how our wonderful children performed at weekly meets, and at the ACT Championships, the Relay and Multi-event carnivals as well as the small groups who attended the other club carnivals. This is not only with respect to their efforts on the track and field, but also with respect to their sportsmanship regardless of how they performed. Seeing our children cheering on someone struggling through the longest distance races or Seniors encouraging the Juniors is something that I regard so, so highly. I can t recall a better year in this regard. Athletes, congratulations on all your efforts throughout the season, but a special well done to those who secured medals at the ACT Championships (18, with many of them achieving multiple medals) as well as those who achieved personal bests, of which there were also plenty! To our representatives at the National level, (Shannon Nutt. Claire Yung, Simon Yung, Elizabeth Caddy and Lizanne van Scheppingen), well done on your various achievements. Finally, the committee and I are very proud of our club and we feel we have a wonderful platform to continue to improve in years to come. We certainly adhere to LA s motto of Family Fun and Fitness and this was demonstrated at the Christmas party (apologies for the shaving cream relay) and throughout the season with lots of encouragement for each other to achieve the goals of faster, longer and higher. Thank you, enjoy the break and see you all again in October. Andrew Sutton President April 2014
