Fisher Flyer Submissions Please your school related article, event or volunteer requests to newsletter@fisherhsc.com by Mondays at noon. The week of April 16 signals the beginning of the California Smarter Balanced Assessment window for the state. As such, our staff has correspondingly designed a testing schedule that will allow students to do their very best in representing what they have learned and mastered. Our intent is to minimize any distractions that might inhibit our students from doing their best. This requires providing reasonable time blocks for conducting the actual testing, minimizing the impacts of additional homework during this time, and helping our students understand the importance of rest, proper nutrition and bringing a positive attitude to the testing arena. In past years, the testing time schedule lingered over the span of several weeks, which tends to disrupt the flow of daily instruction and makes it difficult for students to sustain their focus. We have condensed the testing schedule to one week this year, April 30 through May 4, while providing reasonable testing blocks, and teachers have made a commitment to not assign homework during the scheduled week of testing. In addition, we adjusted our Open House schedule on Thursday, May 3 to be a full day with the intent of having Friday, May 4 scheduled as the minimum day at the conclusion of testing. Students will expend a significant amount of mental energy throughout the week of testing, and we felt it would be beneficial to shift the minimum day to the end of the week wherein we plan to acknowledge our students and have planned activities to celebrate as a school. As such, students will have completed all testing by 2:45 pm on Thursday, May 3. Please make a note of the designated minimum day change for future planning. One additional challenge of the previously weeks long testing schedule is providing for student make-ups should they miss a portion of the SBAC testing. We also deduced that if we condense the testing schedule to a week, we can count on parents to plan any appointments, etc. that require missed schooling outside the testing window to reduce the need for make-ups. Continued on page 2

2 Page 2 Principals Corner continued from page 1 Silicon Valley Math Field Day We are confident that this new format will continue to serve our students in putting their best foot forward, and we appreciate your support and understanding with regard to the scheduling impacts. We also hope you will encourage your son/daughter to do his/her very best, while also minimizing any anxiety related to testing in general. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at Sincerely, On Saturday, March 24, fourteen Fisher students went to West Valley Junior College for Silicon Valley Math Field Day. These brave students tackled challenging problems in Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, Probability and beyond. In addition to building perseverance and problem solving skills, the team brought home a 2nd place trophy and numerous individual awards and honors. Congratulations to all! School Bus Feasibility Study In February, the Town of Los Gatos began a School Bus Feasibility Study. The first parent survey revealed an overwhelming positive response from the community. As a recap, the primary goal of the project is reducing traffic congestion near schools. This work is being conducted in coordination with, but independent from, the schools. To further refine where the service will be offered and what features are most important, in a more in-depth survey is underway. The survey was sent last week to all families in the Los Gatos Union School District. The survey closes April 8. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and stay informed. If you have questions contact schoolbus@losgatosca.gov.

4 Fisher Sports Corner Page 4 Girls Volleyball Varsity Girls - March 27 The Fisher Varsity Girls Volleyball team faced off against a laser-focused CT English team on Tuesday. They played hard fought games, but A and B lost in 2 games each. The A team continued its solid team play with great passing and communication. Katie Wright gave us some kills with her hits while Hemani Patel added 7 points to our score with her consistent serving. Elvira Lundberg made some saving passes to keep the ball in play and gave us a chance at the W. The B team benefited from some huge digs from Avery Murphy and Kaela Mason who put their bodies on the line for the team, but CTE s system and serves proved to be the winning combination. Varsity Girls - March 28 Fisher s Varsity Girls Volleyball team played their hearts out against Moreland on Wednesday. The B team started the afternoon and had great success from the serves of Darya Hajiseyedjavadi. Kayla Mason and Avery Murphy made impossible plays tight on the net. Izzy Garcia flew into a dig from her knees and the whole team communicated amazingly. Moreland, however, barely squeezed out successive wins in 2 games. The A team started a flurry with powerful serves and a huge leaping kill by Katie Wright. Elvira Lundberg found the seam between two blockers to spike down another point, while Izzy Awdow covered the entire court making beautiful sets for her team to hit. Gianna Golino nailed the back corner with another hit. The serving of Reed Ankaitis tallied a lot of points for the Trojan girls who fought through 3 games against Moreland but lost 2-1. JV Girls - March 27 On a beautiful spring afternoon, the JV Girls Volleyball team played CT English in the cascading mountains of Santa Cruz. The A team came out on fire winning the first set, but the sleeping Cheetah giants woke up and rallied point for point in the second and ultimately winning the third set. Shout-outs to Karissa Elliot, Allison Black, and Hana Wright with great play at the net. And for those solid serves from Valeria Gonzales and Ellie White. The B Team kept their winning streak rolling, handling the CT English Cheetahs in two sets. The girls were ready with sharp hits and precise serves that kept the Cheetahs on their heels. Notables include Katie Steiner at the net, and Alli Sherdroff, Ella Nguyen, and Avery Closser with brilliant serves. The final game of the regular season is this Thursday against Redwood on our home court. Good Luck Ladies. JV Girls - March 29 As the shackles of winter s frost were replaced by the warm spring sun, the JV Girls Volleyball team took on the mighty Griffins of Redwood on Thursday. The B Team started the games with a blistering round of serves, shocking the Griffins and taking the first set. The Griffins attempted to rally in the second, but the B Team held off their offense with quick bumps and perfectly placed sets. Ashley Gold, Kate Sherry, and Ally Sheroff led the way, along with Belle Bramer s consistent play, to win their fifth team victory. The A Team finished the night with a challenging game of their own. The Redwood A Team came out fired up and ready to play with 10 unanswered points. But the Trojans did not lose faith. They battled back but came up short in the first, then were unrelenting in the second, and with renewed confidence finished a tight match in the third. Solid play by Sasha Bins and Teagan Fogerty led the charge, but it was Ilona Estrin s power serve that won the day. Play-offs began on Tuesday, April 3 at Fisher s Gym. Good luck Trojans. Boys Soccer March 27 The Fisher JV and Varsity Boys Soccer teams got an opportunity to play at Los Gatos High School under the lights. The JV team won 6-0. Chase Hooper did a fantastic job on and off the ball. Alberto Lasso played a more advanced role as forward and showed some great touches. Chase Hinson was very smart with his play. He handled the ball well and was aggressive moving the ball forward. Coach Davies said, It was a great game for us and the boys seemed to love the experience. Fisher Sports Column continued on page 5

5 Page 5 Fisher Sports Column continued from page 4 JV Boys - March 29 The JV Boys Soccer team beat Redwood 6-0 with Makoa Sniffen showing great effort, attitude and dedication to the game. He restricted the opponents long ball attempts and played safe and smart upon gaining possession. Ryan Novinsky always plays with a smile and a competitive attitude. He was smart with the ball and stopped the opponents from advancing up the field. Collin Wentzein always impresses with his dedication and attitude to play any position. He competes well and never gives up. Varsity Boys - March 29 The Varsity Boys Soccer team beat Redwood 4-0. Liam Ruvane had a goal and put in a lot of work on both ends of the field. He looked to complete passes and played smart. Ethan Choe and Ian Moore worked together very well in the back, limiting the Griffins attack. They were monsters in the air, winning every 50/50 ball. Luke White held it down in the midfield, playing superbly. He helped create an array of chances offensively as well as stopping the opposition from creating their own.
