Mrs Quartermain Star of the Sea Spelling Bee This year Star of the Sea will be running a Spelling Bee Competition. This competition is open to all students in Years 4 to 6 who wish to participate. Children that are interested have received the words from their class teacher. If your child did not get a word list and you would like one, please see your child s teacher. Year level finals will be held in Week 8 or 9 this term. The three winners from each year level will be representing Star of the Sea at the South of the River Interschool Spelling Bee on Thursday 25 October West Coast Eagles jumper. Want to win a signed 2018 West Coast Eagles Jumper? Now on display in the school office. You could be the proud owner of this very special jersey signed by the Eagles players. Simply purchase your raffle tickets. All funds will be going to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. They operate a project in South Sudan and the funds raised will help towards the building and running of a college training and educating young adults to become teachers. 3 THE ARTS AT SOTS Term 3 is such an exciting time in Music at SOTS. We participated in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival in the Contemporary Band and Dance sections, attend One Big Voice with our choir at Perth Arena and have SOTS Got Talent. BAND On Wednesday the 2 nd August our talented school band went to Corpus Christi College to perform two songs as part of the Contemporary Band section of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. The first song was our version of the song Yellow by Coldplay. We renamed the song Stars and rewrote the song to celebrate Nature. Look at the stars.. how they shine for you. Look at the trees.. how they shelter you. Look at the flowers.. how they bloom for you. Nature, so beautiful! The second song was our original song about Rockingham. Our talented guitarist (and youngest band member), Oliver Skinner, came up with a fantastic riff and melody. Then after much research asking people why they love Rockingham and looking at information from the local council and tourist information centre, our lyrics were completed. The song Rock City has a jazzy, upbeat vibe and the students at SOTS are always keen to join in the chorus We love this City. We love this City called Rockingham. (Hopefully the residents of Rockingham will be too!) CHOIR The before school and recess band practices definitely paid off as the judge (Shaun Street a former SOTS student) was very impressed and rewarded the SOTS band with an excellent score card; complimenting the band on their cohesion, drumming, vocals and originality. An awesome performance by our band members: Oliver Skinner, Shania Italiano, Gypsi Rabeling, Taryn Miles, Tayah Farrington, Myca Villanueva, Gabriel Colemenares & Clain Noguerra. A huge thank you goes to Adrian Hoffmann for his role in supporting the band and helping with the practice & getting the students performance ready. One Big Voice is an annual event at Perth Arena which should never be missed! On Friday the 17 th of August 4,000 students from over 80 primary school choirs sang together to create an AMAZING performance like you have never seen or heard before. All schools learned different parts of uplifting and positive songs to create beautiful harmonies. Seeing 4,000 students sing together is both astounding and mesmerising. Our school choir had been preparing 11 songs for One Big Voice since the beginning of the year. They learnt their words and parts with dedication and commitment. I continue to be so impressed with their enthusiasm, talent and passion. It was an extremely long day, travelling up to Perth Arena by bus (singing all the way of course!). We were very thankful to have Mrs Boyle, Mr Da Silva, Mrs Glass and Miss Girling to help with 55 choir members. Once at Perth Arena we had a full rehearsal of the songs with the other schools, a snack before we watched Young Talent and then our performance started at 7pm. The SOTS choir were AMAZING; not only with their angelic voices and big smiles but their impeccable behaviour right up until their parents collected them after 9pm. I m sure they will remember this experience forever. As part of the One Big Voice I could nominate students to audition for solo singing parts, young talent, to compere and to play instruments. Shania Italiano was selected for Young Talent to showcase her skill as a vocalist and performed a song Beautiful Disaster on her own to over 6,000 people before the choirs started. Shania was also selected for a major solo part in the final song This Is Me beginning the song before 4,000 others joined her, spectacular! She was also a soloist in Child Of This World and was one of the rappers on stage for the song We Celebrate. Shania is a gifted singer and her talent far surpasses her 11 years so get your autographs and sunglasses now as her future looks bright!! Jack Illich, one of our SOTS Music Leaders, auditioned for a compere role and won the Welcome To Country part. Jack s enthusiasm and positivity is contagious and his well rehearsed and executed speech and his super smile dazzled the audience. He also was one of the rappers on stage for the song We Celebrate. Oliver Skinner, our talented and passionate SOTS band guitarist auditioned and won a guitar part in the Skye Boat Song where he performed with other primary school instrumentalists. We are very blessed to have Oliver at SOTS another year next year and if you haven t seen him in action you need to! Oliver regularly busks at the SOTS markets on Friday mornings and his skill on the guitar has to be seen to be believed.

4 SOTS GOT TALENT ABORIGINAL INCURSION On Tuesday 21st of August, all year 2 classes as well as Aboriginal students attended an Aboriginal incursion. Actors from Yirra Yaakin Theater Company did a performance called Kaarla Kaatijin (which in Noongar means to 'Understand Fire'). The actors used Noongar knowledge and storytelling to deliver traditional stories about fire in an exciting and engaging way. Students went on a journey into the lives of Djitty Djitty (Willy Wagtail), Kulbardi (Magpie), Yonga (Kangaroo) and many more familiar friends as they explored the importance of Kaarla (Fire) in the next chapter of Yirra Yaakin s immersive Kaatijin series. Travelling through four different stories, audience members learnt about Meeka, Kaarla and Djitty Djitty the Brave, How the Magpie and Crow Got Their Colour and Songs and How We Made Fire. Through a mix of traditional Noongar dreaming stories and contemporary Indigenous storytelling, Kaarla Kaatijin explored the importance of religious education, as well as unpacking what it means to be a strong, centered individual learning about the world. Students and staff alike enjoyed this captivating show of the rich and diverse history and culture of Australia s Noongar people. DANCE The Year 6 dance group for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival did us proud in their amazing performance of "The Case Of The Missing Gnomes" at the Perth Convention Centre on Wednesday 22nd August. They received a fantastic report especially with creativity of choreography expression and audience interaction, originality and clarity of message and overall impact. The Year 6's, Sally Shanassy and myself got the bus to Perth Conventio Centre in the morning for a rehearsal and then we all went and had a delicious lunch at Elizabeth Quay. The afternoon was spent exploring Elizabeth Quay, playing cards and board games, having hair and make up done and then putting on costumes before meeting excited parents before showtime! It was a HUGE day but everyone was in good spirits and we had lots of fun and laughs. The Year 6 group had impeccable manners and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of this wonderful, memorable experience. A massive THANK YOU to Sally Shanassy, SOTS Mum and Kolbe Dance Teacher, who very generously gave us her time and talent to make this happen. She choreographed the performance, came in twice a week for months and assisted with props, lighting and stage plan, costumes, hair, make up. We could not have participated in this event without her. This term students have an opportunity to showcase their talents in Music not only singing, dancing, playing instruments but also performing magic tricks, telling jokes, performing circus acts, showing off soccer skills or karate moves whatever their talent may be. Some of these acts will be selected for our SOTS Got Talent concert on the last day of this term and if you are able to come we would love to see you there!

5 NAPLAN ONLINE School Readiness Test You may have heard that NAPLAN Online was introduced in 2018, with 274 schools Western Australian schools participating. Our school will be transitioning to NAPLAN Online in NAPLAN online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. Your child s results will be returned to the school faster, within a few weeks rather than a few months. This trial, called the School Readiness Test (SRT), will enable us to assess our technical readiness to implement the new online assessments. In addition it will gives us a chance to try out the new national online assessment platform in a real-life classroom environment During Week Seven of Term Three, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in a trial of the assessment platform, by undertaking two online readiness tests that include examples of the new NAPLAN online questions. Each test will take about 45 minutes to complete. Participating in this trial is important as it will help us ensure we have adequate internet connectivity, and whether students have access to sufficient number of devices for NAPLAN Online testing. During the trial, our teachers will have the opportunity to practice managing the classroom logistics for an online assessment and the new test administration processes. The readiness test has not been constructed to assess curriculum knowledge, but rather to provide students with an opportunity to experience the types of questions that will be included in the new online assessments. As such, reports will not be provided. Participation in the SRT is a key step to ensuring a successful NAPLAN online experience in 2019.
