1 GFWC/CFWC Marina District #18 Ship s Log Volume 59/10 April 2015 President s Message -Mary Linn Coleman The Call to Convention GFWC CFWC 112 th Annual Convention was mailed out on Friday, March 20 to Club Presidents, District President, District 1 st Vice President, CFWC Chairmen and CFWC Committee Members. Credential cards were included with the Call. Club Presidents received the number of Credential cards for their Club delegates. It would be great to have as many members from Marina District as possible. We hope to make a lot a noise when the Awards are announced. Hopefully, our District will be included on the winners list. The Workshops include Leadership/Protocol/PR, CFWC Membership Clubhouse Grants and Program Chairman s Trade Show. And you must visit the Art Exhibit room and view the Art, Crafts and Photography 1 st place winners from the Districts. We will be rooting for the entries from Marina District. There will also be lots of Vendors for your shopping pleasure. Hope to see you there. Our own Annual Convention is being held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Torrance DoubleTree Hotel. We are currently working on the Agenda and Program. Flyers have been distributed to our Club Presidents with the details about time and amount. Members will pay their Clubs the $40.00 cost and the Club Treasurer will complete the Reservation form to include with the Club check. The form and check is sent to Deanna Hanson, Convention Chairman. The speakers will be Toby Kahan, CFWC 2 nd Vice President, Dori Kelsey, CFWC 3 rd Vice President and Heidi Ashcraft, Councilwoman, City of Torrance. Our Young Musicians winners will perform for us, which is always delightful. The Awards will be presented for Reports, Volunteer of the Year and the Twin Dolphin Award. Vendors will be present with their display of items we all love. Hard to believe that next month is the end of the first year of this Administration. What a ride it has been! Time flies when you are having fun and that describes being President of Marina District. Speaking of having fun, we have arranged to have our Summer Social Picnic again at Chevron Park. Please mark your calendars and Save the Date Friday, August 14, Details and flyer will be distributed with the details later. First Vice President/Dean of Chairmen Gina Radocchio Hello Ladies! Well the time is fast approaching - time for the big reveal - time for our Club Awards Presentations! This is one of the most exciting events of our District year. All of your hard work and exceptional projects are going to be celebrated with our award/certificate acknowledgements. Please try to attend to cheer for your Club and your sisters in District. 2 has pulled out all the stops to give us a great lunch, vendors, and a beautiful room high in the clouds of the Penthouse at the Doubletree in Torrance. Hope to see all of you there, Saturday, April 18th. Also during our Convention we will be awarding the Volunteer of the Year Award. One exceptional lady will be awarded this high honor for her devotion and work in her community. She will be given the beautiful trophy to place on display in her home for one year. Come and cheer her on! Second Vice President/Membership Jane Thomey With the emphasis on enrolling new members to our clubs we should not lose sight of the importance of retaining existing members. During this renewal period it is important to reach out to all your members, especially the ones who are slow to respond. Personal contact or handwritten notes might persuade a reluctant member to sign up for the coming year. A membership composed of both retained and newer members will strengthen our clubs and make them grow. The results of the annual Twin Dolphin Award for the club with the highest percentage of new members for the period September 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015 will be announced at the Marina District Convention on April 18. Please send your results to me by April 2. This annual prize is a fitting finale to our membership efforts this year. It is an event to look forward to and I hope to see many of you there. Welcome to the Parliamentarian Corner. DUTIES OF DELEGATES; When a club member accepts being elected as a delegate to convention from her club, she has the obligation to attend the convention, listen to what is being discussed and vote if necessary, and report back to her club. An alternate should not be asked to serve in her place except for a serious reason. At the convention, she has the duty to be present at the business meetings. Upon arriving at the convention she needs to check in at the credential desk to register or if preregistered to identify herself as the delegate from her club. A delegate is free to vote as she sees fit on questions at the convention, except she must vote in accordance with any instructions from her club with regard to particular matters scheduled for consideration. It is her duty to prepare an information report of what transpired at the convention to her club. ALTERNATES; In most cases the same number of alternates are elected as delegates. When a member is elected as an alternate, her duty is to be available in case a delegate is unable to fulfill her duties. If a delegate has already registered for the convention, an alternate may replace that delegate. This can be done only when the Convention Committee is presented with proper evidence of the delegate s withdrawal and the re-registering of the alternate as the new delegate. A delegate s temporary absence from the convention hall does not entitled an alternate to vote, speak, or make motions in the delegate s place, even with the delegate s authorization. Joan Harmon/ Marina District Parliamentarian Don t Forget The Marina District Convention on April 18th at the Double Tree Hotel in Torrance AWARDS, VENDORS, GOOD FOOD, and FRIENDSHIP Foster Children Resource Project Gina Radocchio I am starting this article with such gratefulness in my heart for all of our wonderful, generous Marina District Clubs and ladies. The clothing organizing and folding project that took place at the Wilshire DCFS office was a huge success. Previously to our ladies going to work in the offices the Social Workers had to plow through piles of unorganized clothing for the children that were brought into the office for help. Now, thanks to you ladies, the clothes have been sorted according to size and gender, put away in marked cabinets and on shelves leaving the Social Workers freedom from an already very stressful situation. Also, the children are so delighted to have

3 new clean clothes that they are proud to wear! Thank you so much ladies. You are so appreciated by many people and especially the children! I would also like to thank the very generous Santa Monica Bay Woman's Club for their loving donation of $750 to the DCFS Welcome Center for young children. This Welcome Center is, unfortunately, home for many children when a foster home could not be found. Often siblings are separated and must stay for sometimes months until a placement can be found. In the meantime they need clothing and most of all be kept occupied during what must seem to be long days. I have contacted the woman in charge of the center and am purchasing the most needed items for the children. A tour is being set up for Joe and me to view the Center where I have been given permission to take pictures of the facility to share with our Marina ladies. This is being allowed since we were fingerprinted and background checked with the FBI. Again I thank you from my heart for all of your caring and generosity.
