Please see the above calendar as a reminder of the day your child s activity will run. It is important that students are picked up at 4:00 p.m. A staff member will wait until students participating in Excels are picked up or a note is sent in allowing the student to walk or ride their bikes home. As such, any student that is repeatedly not picked up by 4:15 p.m. may not be able to continue to participate in their activity. Philadelphia/Washington DC Trip The Philadelphia/Washington, DC trip is filling up fast! February 15 is the deadline to secure your child a spot for the 2019 trip! (Note: Students may continue to sign up after this date but only if there is room on the trip.) Registration material are posted on the MS website. 2 Project 351 Project 351 is a youth driven service organization made up of one 8 th grade Ambassador from each town/city in Massachusetts. Ambassadors are nominated by teachers and are chosen based on their values of kindness, compassion, humility and generosity of spirit. The Ambassadors serve a term of one year and take part in service projects giving back to the community at the local or state level. This year s Ambassadors are Vanessa Basame- representing Middleton, Madeline DiNardo- representing Topsfield and Pearce Deal- representing Boxford. Left to right: Madeline DiNardo, Topsfield; Pearce Deal, Boxford; Vanessa Basame, Middleton Future City On January 26th a group of students representing the Masconomet Middle School STEM club attended the New England Regional Future City Competition in Watertown. The program challenges students to think of problems that cities may face in the future and solve those problems. This year the challenge was focused around power grid resilience after disasters. The massive power outages in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria served as inspiration. Masconomet sent two teams to the competition. Team Peluang placed 2nd overall, took home the awards for best essay, best city model, and best health system. Team Kokoronashi took the award for best transportation system and 4th place in the preliminary round. Masconomet Middle School Newsletter 2

Bottom Left Jocelyn Dumouchel and Max Therrien. Math Team The Masco Math Team excelled again at the most recent meet. Masco Team 1 came in first place with a decisive lead over all other competitors. Masco Team 2 came in third, battling neck-and-neck in a tight race against several other teams. 8 th graders Michael Tran, Evan Zeltsar, and Henry Liu all had perfect scores, and Joey Ellard was the highest scorer among Masco 7 th graders. The next meet is at Masco on February 28. Masco Chainbreakers Mountain Bike Club/Team Season The Masco Mountain Bike/Club Team is open to any child in Grades 5-12 and is typically broken down into a Development Group and a Race Team. Being a Masco student is not required. The main objective is to get kids out on their mountain bikes and to have some fun on the local trails. Kids who are interesting in racing are encouraged to participate in the New England High School Cycling Association (NEHSCA) race series or to just try a race and see if they like it. Practice rides on local trails typically run April-June and September-October on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and occasionally on weekends (attendance is not mandatory ride when you can!). The group also likes to volunteer to help with local trail maintenance and clean-up efforts. The team is coached primarily by parents who have backgrounds in road and mountain bike racing and share the ultimate team goal of having fun on bikes while developing new skills and friendships! A team meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday February 7:00 pm (Location: TBD). This is a great chance for kids and parents to meet the coaches, learn about the team, and ask questions. Please note that this is currently a primarily parent-run club/team and is not yet directly affiliated with Masconomet Middle/High School. 6 M MASCONOMET REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT 20 Endicott Road Boxford, MA (978) Gwen Lemire, BSN, RN, NCSN Middle School Nurse s Office Extension January 2019 Dear Parent or Guardian, Postural Screenings and Height & Weight Measurements for all Seventh Grade students will begin the week of February 4th as follows: 7 RED will be screened during Health on Feb. 5 th and 6 th 7 WHITE will be screened during Art on Feb. 12 th and 13 th 7 BLUE will be screened during Geometry Lab on Feb. 28 th and March 1 st The purpose of this screening is to find early signs of possible spinal problems in children (Grades 5-9). This is not a diagnostic service but a screening mandated by the state to identify young people who should have further medical evaluation. If you do not want your child to be screened for reasons other than on religious grounds, please provide written documentation from his or her primary care physician prior to the screening. If your child has any unusual postural findings, you will be notified by letter and asked to take your child to his or her primary care provider as a precaution. The majority of students exhibit no findings. If nothing unusual is found, you will not be contacted. Female students are encouraged to bring a two-piece swimsuit or a halter-top to school for the postural screening. This type of clothing permits a more accurate observation of the back. 8 Vape pens and e-cigarettes are not harmless, yet 20% of MA high school students report currently using them, and 40% have tried them at least once. And, according to the latest national survey, Monitoring the Future, increases in adolescent vaping from 2017 to 2018 were the largest ever recorded in the past 43 years for any adolescent substance use outcome in the U.S. Learn about and access resources on what these products are, why they are harmful, and how to protect our kids from this latest trend.
