From our School Nurse Halloween health and safety tips For many people, autumn events like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties, and eat yummy treats. These events are also opportunities to provide nutritious snacks, get physical activity, and focus on safety. Below are tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests. Going trick-or-treating? S Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible. A Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. F Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. E Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat. H Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. A Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation. L Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. L Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses. O Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. W Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. E Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook well. 2
3 E N Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Otherwise, stay outside. Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes. This information was obtained from the CDC. For more information on Halloween Safety go to Dear Parent or Guardian, The Dr Kevin Hurley Middle School will be doing an annual Postural Screening beginning November 1st. The purpose of this is to find early signs of possible spinal problems in children in grades 5-9. It is not a diagnostic service but a program to identify young people who should have further medical evaluation. If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified and asked to take your child to a physician as a precaution. The majority of students exhibit no findings. If nothing unusual is found, we will not be contacting you again until the screening next year. If you do not wish to have your child screened at school, written documentation provided by your child s physician must be submitted to the school nurse. This documentation must include the date of screening, results and physician s name. The screening will take place during PE class in a private area of the girls and boys locker room. Because the student s back should be bare for optimal viewing of the spine, girls are asked to wear a halter top and shorts or a two piece swimsuit. If you have any questions, please contact me at ext Sincerely, Jill M. Dumont, RN, BSN School Nurse Guidance News Just a reminder that the 8th grade students will be visiting Tri County Regional Vocational Technical High School on Friday, November 4th. Students will depart promptly at 8:10 and they will be returning by 1:45 pm. Please be sure to get your children to school on time so that they do not miss the bus. Students will be eating lunch at Tri County. The cost of lunch is $2.50. If your child receives free or reduced lunch they will be receiving a lunch ticket and will pay the same price at Tri County that they do at HMS. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the field trip, please contact Mrs. Czech. Yellow team News On October 25th the Yellow Team recognized their On A Roll Students to receive awards. The following students were recognized for good citizenship, exceeding expectations, and positive attitudes. Congratulations to these students! Tyler Moreira Azurae Cruz Alexia Desrochers Correy Hammond 3 Gabrielle Blum Julia DiPietro
4 Collin McDermott Peter D'Ambra Adreanna Burke Eliza Dantas Courtney McCaughey John Anghinetti Sports News MA revised the Head Injuries and Concussions in Extracurricular Athletic Activities (105 CMR ) this school year to prevent and manage students who sustain a head injury in sports or other activities. Any student who has had a serious head injury or concussion must document that on the updated Pupil Information form received on the first day of school. The School Nurse and coach must be notified of any previous or present head injury/concussion before participating in PE, organized sports, or any extracurricular activity.
