1 MB Senior News May, 2015 OLDER AMERICANS MONTH Older Americans Month is an annual event started when President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizen Month. It was later renamed Older Americans Month to honor Older Americans and their contributions. Each year there is a theme and this year s theme for May is Get into the Act. The Older Adult Program encourages all older adults to Get into the Act by engaging in social, recreational and wellness activities. Call, go online, or visit us in Joslyn Center to discover programs and activities to help you Get into the Act. Theatre Night Out Enjoy an English Pub style dinner at The Whale & Ale restaurant followed by an evening of Scottish, Irish and American folk music at The Grand Annex. The Grand Annex is a 150-seat cabaret concert venue part of and down the street from the Warner Grand Theatre, a beautifully restored historic art deco theatre in downtown San Pedro. The entertainment, the band the Syncopaths is a talented Celtic/folk band that brings a fresh, contemporary spin to music and songs rooted in the Scottish, Irish and American folk traditions. Enjoy spirited vocals, fiddling, and picking on the mandolin. Take the Dial a Ride bus to Mira Costa for a campus tour on Wednesday, May 20, including a stop at the art gallery to see the FACES Art Exhibition. The bus will leave at 3:00 pm from Joslyn Community Center. Reservations required, call Residents invited to apply for Senior Advisory Committee Manhattan Beach, CA The city of Manhattan Beach will accept applications until May 22, 2015 from residents interested in serving on the Senior Advisory Committee. Three vacancies exist due to the expiration of terms, though members may reapply for another term. Terms are a two year commitment. The nine-member Committee works in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department s Older Adult Program to make recommendations regarding the delivery of senior programs, activities and policies. 2 MONDAY ACTING OUT AGAIN Acting Out Again begins with a half hour of acting instruction followed by 90 minutes of reading 10-minute plays aloud. Time permitting, all get an opportunity to read.
