2 Spring 2016 Issue We want to thank all of you who opted to receive our newsletter sent via vs. snail mail. This has saved us a lot of money in stamps! If you are receiving this as snail mail and would like to receive this as an , please me and let us know. The Alumni Association held the bi-annual Athletic Hall of Fame this past October at the Crow Canyon Country Club. We had a great turn out and four fantastic inductees. They shared so many memories and even brought some of their memorabilia. Let s congratulate Karen Peterson Huether 85, Erin Kellar-Hill 99, Christopher Rodd 03 and Roy Helu Jr. 07. Homecoming 2016 is happening this year on Friday, October 14. The week is always filled with fun class spirit like the class floats which are always fantastic with such creative ideas. The floats gather at the high school around 2:15PM and then travel throughout downtown. There s always a great turn out from the community, all cheering them on, so come and spend part of your Friday afternoon in Danville and enjoy the parade! At the Homecoming game, the Alumni Association has been doing something fun and have offered bleachers, set up at the end zone for any alumni who want to sit away from the high school kids. It is a little bit quieter and easier to climb those steps. LOL! The Class of 1966 will be celebrating their 50th class reunion on Saturday, October 15. So many memories and fun times! The class has a lot of exciting plans! Go to and check out the Alumni/Reunions link to see what things are going on. Fun, Fun and more Fun. The Alumni Association continues to offer scholarships to two SRVHS seniors. $250 is awarded to a student planning to attend a two-year college or vocational school and $500 to a student planning to attend a four-year university. We receive our donations from the Athletic Hall of Fame dinner, selling of our SRVHS 100 year centennial book as well as regular donations. We are still looking for those who would love to help us out this year for a great cause. We always welcome people to join our committee, too. If you d like to be a part of a fun group, please just give me a jingle or send me an . This is not a big time commitment and an opportunity to give back to your school. Sincerely, Karin Raitz SRVHS Alumni Director kraitz@pacbell.net

4 Updates and Changes to SRVHS Campus and School Schedule Almost all of the single story wings across the campus will be knocked down, and in their place there will be a three-story building occupying the current footprint of E, F and G wings. There will be more parking on campus when this project is completed and an entirely new classroom building parallel to the D hall. While construction is underway, all the classrooms being displaced from the single story wings will be relocated on the practice field next to the Iron Horse Trail. This field will be closed this May to allow the laying of utilities and the placement of the portable classrooms. Most likely, the construction will be completed in time for the new building to open at the start of the school year. In addition, in January of this year, a new district calendar was adopted that will place high school final exams before Winter Break and bring an earlier start to the school year (August 15). This moves SRVHS registration up to early August. They are also working on adjusting the Daily Bell schedule. One of the major reasons for making a change is to find way to provide time to better support students who struggle academically within the school day. The other is to lower the stress level of students by adding time into the school week where students can get homework done and study outside of their regular classes. Data from Stanford Challenge Success Survey shows very clearly that we need to make some changes in order to make the daily school experience more manageable for both staff and students. 6 Around Danville: Brass Door eatery closing chapter, opening another By Georgia Lambert (San Ramon Valley Times) After 42 years, Danny Basso is closing the door on his restaurant career. The owner of San Ramon s renowned Brass Door Restaurant -- which in turn has operated since Basso s retiring around the middle of March, but the restaurant will stay open under new ownership. A family from Martinez bought the restaurant, he said, but everything -- the staff, the menu and the décor -- will remain the same. Danny s father, Dick Basso, and Mick Schlesinger originally opened The Brass Door. I ve lived in Danville my whole life, Danny said. I worked in the restaurant all through high school (San Ramon Valley High School Class of 1966). I was a Danville fireman for three years, then came back to work here in My dad retired in 1978, and I took over from him. Now I m going to retire and get to the next phase of my life with my grandchildren and spend some more time with my wife. He ll also have more time for fly fishing, golf and gardening, he added, and will enjoy being able to spend holidays with his family instead of being away at work. Danny and his wife, Denise (nee Becker), were high school sweethearts, married on Sept. 5, They are the parents of two sons and a daughter and have three grandchildren. Their oldest son, Dan Basso Jr., died in a motorcycle accident last March. Danny said his son s death really brought on his decision to retire. I d like to thank the entire community for all their support, and thank my staff for the great job they ve done in taking care of our guests in such a professional manner. They re the ones that make the place what it is, he said. The Brass Door, located at 2154 San Ramon Valley Blvd., grew right along with the San Ramon Valley. It started small, but, after several remodels -- including an eight-month closure after a 1994 fire -- it now accommodates more than 200 guests. The signature dish, prime rib, features cornfed Midwestern beef. They also serve steaks, chicken, fresh seafood, sandwiches, soups and salads. Photo credit: Brassdoor.com. Article taken from the San Ramon Valley Times. Letter from the Editor Hi fellow alumni! Caption: My Dad, me and my brother Austin ( 13) after a Sacramento Kings basketball game. I can t believe it has been almost 10 years since I started at SRV. Some of my favorite memories from high school were attending Friday night varsity football games, being a varsity track and field athelete, starting the Photo Club on-campus, hanging out in the darkroom and of course the teachers! What are some of your favorites memories?
