WMS WORD! Issue 2, June 17, 2013 Woodstown Soccer Kicks it Up a Notch! By: Jake Rattigan The three Woodstown soccer teams that competed in the latest spring season of aggressive game play, all did fairly well. However, there will be a number of changes amongst the players and teams, whom are obliged to endure them if they wish to keep playing the sport. Not to mention that there is a new summer competition team coming about. To begin, let us discuss the most recent season, Spring. To the surprise of many people in our area, there were only a few middle school soccer teams that traveled; in fact, there was a boy lineup and two girl squads. The male group made up Woodstown s U-13, or seventh grade, soccer team who played in the bottom flight. They call themselves the Woodstown Sharpshooters. This time, they were playing to win the greatest amount of games possible, which in effect could determine if the young men could compete in more difficult matches against highly skillful teams. That is much easier said than done because the boys were put in flight seven with teams that are usually in higher classifications. In this case, the Woodstown players went up against teams such as; the Penns Grove Bull Dogs, a group of boys that are usually in flight six, and the Franklin Township Strikers, whom are generally in a flight near the second. Jokes What did one wall say to the other wall? I will meet you at the corner! What time was it when Sir Lancelot looked at his bellybutton? The middle of the knight! Even so, the Woodstown Sharpshooters performed with fine talent and preparation, which let to their placement of fourth, almost third, place in their category. The boys managed to receive the same record as Penns Grove: five wins, four loses, and one tie. What put the opponent in front of Woodstown was the goal differential, which is the amount of goals scored subtracted by the amount of goals given up. The Bull Dogs had a difference of thirteen goals and the Sharpshooters only had seven. Furthermore, the boys were the only ones to ruin Franklin Township s standings, which became nine wins, zero loses, and one tie due to the Woodstown boys. Now, it is the point in this era, in which the Woodstown Sharpshooters are to argue for a placement in a superior flight. Now, do not forget the other female soccer team, Woodstown Dynamo in the U-14 and Southern (B) grouping. This collection of players did just as well as the rest of the Woodstown teams, yet the only difference was the fact that they played eight games instead of the typical ten. This team was one that may have let their head down on a couple accounts, but still put everything into the sport. Due to that, the Woodstown Dynamo team ended the season with one win, six loses, and one tie. On a side note, be aware of how the girls are categorized by location rather than ability. That is not only discriminating to the female component of the human race, but it will inevitably prevent players from improving if they are on a struggling team against their area s bone-crushing teams. If the girls league was categorized exactly how the boys teams are, scores would definitely be different.. Lastly, there is a brand new soccer team that performs only in the summer for many tournaments. This team is titled South Jersey United and just as it says, it brings players together. The SJU team is specifically for boys, especially at this point in time because it is only the first year. It collects players from as many places and teams as possible and comes together to practice in Woodstown and compete in various places every month. However, only the best people are selected to play and everyone will find out how well this team will work soon enough. In conclusion, there was only three soccer teams this Spring Season and each had victorious moments and troublesome times. Even so, they all strived to do their best and will eventually become amazing teams as time goes on. Additionally, there will be some changes to the teams such as a boys group having a female player. Not to mention the brand new South Jersey United team rising from several towns in New Jersey. All in all, soccer has become successful in Woodstown and will continue to prosper. 3

WMS WORD! Issue, 2 June 3, 2013 The 8th Grade Formal Dance By: Hanna Lindstrom The 2013 grade eight formal dance recently occurred at the high school cafeteria with a theme of Alice in Wonderland. It was decorated with props and treats looking like they belonged in the movie. Traditionally the girls wore dresses of all colors but many of the 8th grade boys were part of the lavender crew. The idea originated from boys in the Two Penny development but others wore lavender as well. While at the dance everyone was laughing and taking pictures that you can find all of social media. Obviously there was the usual music and dancing. It was like any other dance to someone on the outside, but it was these 8th graders last dance! This is what makes the eighth grade dance so special. Dance Favs! What were the most memorable moments from the 8th grade dance this year? We asked 8th graders and this is what they said! The decorations! The theme was unbelievable! The cafeteria was unrecognizable! The food! There was so much food. There was even a candy buffet! The live band! This was the first dance in many years that had a live band for the students to enjoy!

WMS WORD! Issue, 2 June 3, 2013 Mrs. Baum Retires! By: Mackenna Brody and Jacqueline Bates As a young college student, Mrs. Baum determined that she wanted to become a teacher. In response to that, she began her career as a substitute teacher. She also attended college at Rowan and majored in elementary education, minored in English, and earned a masters degree in student personal services. Mrs. Baum said that she will indubitably miss watching the students grow from fifth graders into young adults entering high school, and "blossom." Also, she will miss seeing her fellow colleagues everyday. She explains that teaching made her realize that, "any job you do needs to be done well". And that the most exciting part of being a guidance councilor is feeling the gratification of helping students to resolve their own problems. Because she has been working with Woodstown Middle School for 46 years now, she has decided to retire in order to try new experiences. When she retires, her goals and plans include spending more time with her grandchildren and family, traveling, reading more books, and taking a course to become a CASA (court appointed special advocate) volunteer that assists in being the voice of children involved in court cases. All in all, our wonderful guidance councilor would like to express her last goodbyes by making all aware that she will miss Woodstown Middle School! 6

WMS WORD! Issue 2, June 17, 2013 Spirit Week By: Colin Bailey Recently, the Woodstown Middle School participated in Spirit Week. Spirit Week lasts for one week and asks students to participate in different themes each day. Each classroom is counted for the amount of students participating. The numbers are determined by the amount of students in that homeroom. At the end of each day the winning results are announced for all to hear. All grades in the school participate in this enjoyable activity. The theme for the first day this year was, Dress Up Day. Students were asked to dress up in their nicest clothing. The attire included ties, collared shirts, dresses, and suits. The amount of students that participate was exceptional. The overall winner for the day was the fifth grade. The theme for the second day of Spirit Week was Hat Day. Students were permitted to wear a hat of their choice. It was one of the only days that students were allowed to wear hats in the building. There were large hats, tiny hats, character hats, and cartoon themed hats. Once again, the fifth grade won the competition. Thirdly, Wacky Wild was the theme for Wednesday. Students were asked to dress up as crazy and weird as possible. Some of the outfits worn on the day were hilarious. The clothing ranged from crazy socks, backwards shirts, and mix-matched shoes. Although many students dressed up the fifth grade won again! The last theme of this special week was Team Jersey Day! Students were able to wear any sports attire to be counted in for Spirit Week. The fifth grade swept the school with their fourth win in a row! Mrs. Mullison s class had 100% participation! Way to go. All in all, every student who participated in this week had a blast! It was great to see the teachers enjoying the fun as well. Thank you WMS Student Council! 9

Field Day 2013 By: Matthew Ryan 9:05am, May 17, 2013 marked the start of Field Day. The race for top dog began. Could blue extend their winning streak to 3 years? Well, lets find out! Everyone was cheering and shouting. Celebrating the win. But lets start from the beginning. The activities commenced at 9:05. That was the start of something beautiful. The order of events differed but included things like the water balloon toss, a slip-n -slide race, an obstacle course, and the sack hop. As well as, the lacrosse toss, the hula hoop challenge, the soccer dribbling challenge, the sponge relay, the cup relay, the bowl relay, the clothes line, and everybody s favorite TUG-O -WAR!!! After about an hour and a half of complete awesomeness, it ended. Then, there was lunch. You could have a hot dog, a bag of chips, and a water bottle. Boy, was that refreshing! Then we had about two hours of relaxation time and watched a movie until it was time for the scores to be announced. As Mr. Fargnoli walked out, the crowd quieted. Hello Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Did you enjoy yourselves today? We responded with a roaring YEAH!!! Mr. Fargnoli started up again and finally said, The winner of Field Day 2013 is EVERYONE! WMS WORD June 3, 2013 WMS WORD 15 Lincoln Ave Woodstown, NJ
