January 2017 Extra Years of Zest (XYZ) May you get a clean bill of health from your dentist, your cardiologist, your gastro-enterologist, your urologist, your proctologist, your podiatrist, your psychiatrist, your plumber and the I.R.S. May your hair, your teeth, your face-lift, your abs and your stocks not fall; and may your blood pressure, your triglycerides, your cholesterol, your white blood count and your mortgage interest not rise. Inside this issue: May New Year's Eve find you seated around the table, together with your beloved family and cherished friends. May you find the food better, the environment quieter, the cost much cheaper, and the pleasure much more fulfilling than anything else you might ordinarily do that night. Jean Jackson has been a member of the Centre and a volunteer for 16 years. What brought her to the Centre was she knew a few people here. When she was still working she would come for dinner and got to know a few people and knew it was a good place. She enjoys and is quite involved in the Mat Bowling. In the summer months the group move to Crescent Park for Lawn Bowling. Jean is one of our current board members. She jokes that someone keeps putting her back on the board. She was a board member previously for six years, and has been on the board of directors for 1.5 years currently. What Jean loves about the place is the social contact. The fact that everyone is friendly sticks most predominantly in her mind, as well as the various activities, and excellent meals is what keeps her coming back. She considers it a family, and a place where you feel you belong. Thanks Jean for being a part of our family of friends at the MJDSA, and thanks for the many volunteer hours you put in making this a great place to be a part of. Page 2

Whether you get up and dance or just relax and enjoy the music, you are sure to have a good time! Cost: Saturday January 7, :00-12:00 p.m. Music by: Al & Company Cost: $14.00 Get your tickets early and avoid disappointment PANCAKE BREAKFAST Friday January 13 8:00-10:00 a.m. Cost: $6.00 Harvey Ruehs is another of our long term volunteers and member at the Centre. Harvey joined the club 17 or 18 years ago after moving in from the farm. What originally attracted him to the Centre was the pool tables and playing pool. He remembers that there were so many people waiting to play that you had to put your name on the chalk board waiting list. People played two games and then had to let someone else play. Over the years Harvey has been an active member on the board. He spent 6 years as president, then another 6 years as a board member. Just this past year he let his name stand as a board member again. Harvey jokes that he was just trying to get through his term as president without a heart attack because the previous 3 presidents had heart troubles. Page 4 Harvey smiles as he talks about when he first joined. You could still smoke inside in those days. He recalls when it became a non smoking establishment and what a hub-bub that caused. Harvey was the president when the basement flooded. He recalls getting a call at home that night about 10:30 from Doug saying, you better come, and bring your rubber boots. There had been a fire on Main Street and the back pressure blew the pipe. Water came right in the front door and into the basement. When he arrived there was 6 inches of water in the basement. Sadly, the basement had just recently been updated and this meant starting all over. The basement had horse shoe pits with real sand and everything. Cardiaction used the gym and walking track daily. With the flood this was all lost. What Harvey enjoys most about MJDS is that it is just an easy place to be. There are so many nice people and you can relax and be yourself when you are here. He loves the variety of programs and remarks that we are the envy of a lot of places with our programs, café and facility. He has spoke to people from all over, and they all say that there is no other place that they know of for seniors like this. Thank you Harvey for your years of dedication and service. You make this place GREAT!

XYZ HALL Bring your 2017 Membership Card as we will be checking memberships of people attending the meeting. RENTALS & CATERING We have one large auditorium and one small hall for rent. Our facility provides on-site catering with an assorted menu, please note 5% GST is added to the cost of all rentals and catering costs. Call us for your next event! XYZ HALL A large hall that can seat up to 200, the facility offers a stage with flood lights and choice of round or rectangular tables. The rental fee includes linens and set up. There is on site catering available. Piano, overhead projector, podium, microphone and bar service available. 6 MARY STUART DIRECTOR OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS Even before she retired, Mary Stuart was a member of the Moose Jaw & District Seniors Association. What brought her here was Bridge. She is an avid Bridge player and rarely misses a tournament. It has been 18 years since she retired and she became a volunteer shortly after. In the beginning she volunteered in the kitchen in the afternoon as well as at banquets but found that it bothered her arthritis. Eight years ago, she started volunteering at the front desk and has been there ever since. Mary spent all of her 45 years of employment working for General Motors. She started right out of school at Central Motors, then Band City Chev-Olds and finally Murray GM. All of those years were in the office as the bookkeeper. She says it is hard to believe it has been 18 years since she retired. One of Mary s favourite things to do is to spend time with her family. Mary has 4 children, 4 grand children and 3 great grand children. Some of them are spread around Canada but it gives her another reason to travel. Mary has done a lot of traveling since she retired. She has visited Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Mexico, all multiple times. When you ask Mary what draws her to the Centre she says it is because it is a great place for people to gather. They can enjoy entertainment, spend time doing their favourite hobbies and just enjoy the company of others. Thanks Mary for sharing the gift of your time with us at Moose Jaw & District Seniors. You are the first person that greets new people as they come in the door, and you always make people welcome and leave a lasting impression. JUST A WORD OF THANKS... The Moose Jaw & District Seniors Association would like to thank the volunteers for the many hand made knit or crochet items they have donated to the Centre. You can find many of their creations in the Gallery and Craft Shop for sale. All the proceeds from these sales go directly to the Centre and help to offset operating costs and provide programs at the Centre. Thanks! Page 6
