1 What s New at Eaton s? Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association Inc Main St, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 3K3 Office Phone: Sports Level Phone: Fax: mjsenior@sasktel.net A TIME TO REMEMBER November 2017 Extra Years of Zest (XYZ) On November 11, especially, but also throughout the year, we have the opportunity to remember the efforts of special Canadians. In remembering, we pay homage to those who respond to their country's needs. On November 11, we pause for two minutes of silent tribute, and we attend commemorative ceremonies in memory of our war dead. Following the First World War a French woman, Madame E. Guérin, suggested to British Field- Marshall Earl Haig that women and children in devastated areas of France could produce poppies for sale to support wounded Veterans. The first of these poppies were distributed in Canada in November of 1921, and the tradition has continued ever since, both here and in many parts of the world. Inside this issue: A Time To Remember 1 Edmonton Bound 2 Christmas Hearing Health 3 3 Monthly Menu 4 Marlene Ariss Years of Volunteering Poppies are worn as the symbol of remembrance, a reminder of the blood-red flower that still grows on the former battlefields of France and Belgium. During the terrible bloodshed of the second Battle of Ypres in the spring of 1915, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, wrote of these flowers which lived on among the graves of dead soldiers: In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. John McCrae The flowers and the larks serve as reminders of nature's ability to withstand the destructive elements of war by men, a symbol of hope in a period of human despair. In Canada, traditionally the poppies which we wear were made by disabled Veterans. They are reminders of those who died while fighting for peace: we wear them as reminders of the horrors of conflict and the preciousness of the peace they fought hard to achieve. The two minutes of silence provide another significant way of remembering wartime while thinking of peace. Two minutes are scarcely enough time for thought and reflection. As we pause and bow our heads, we remember those brave men and women who courageously volunteered for the cause of freedom and peace. 2 Edmonton Bound We recently said goodbye to a couple of long standing members and volunteers at the Centre. Fran & Bob Brand. Fran and Bob became members of the Moose Jaw & District Seniors over 11 years ago. They had moved to Moose Jaw from Edmonton and were looking for a place to meet people and find things to do in their spare time. It wasn t long before they were coming a couple of times a week to meet friends or to volunteer. In her spare time Fran loves to paper tole. She also enjoys painting and loves to take an old garden figurine, give it a new coat of paint and put it out in the garden brand new! Fran has volunteered at various banquets and events helping in the kitchen. Bob was a member of the Board of Directors for several years. Once he was finished his term he continued to volunteer to do security twice a week. Bob is quite the woodworker and has donated a number of his creations to the Centre to raffle off for fundraisers. Fran & Bob are moving back to Edmonton to be closer to family. We will miss you both! If you are planning to attend, please R.S.V.P. to Carol Gustafson by calling (306) or carolturner325@gmail.com. LINE DANCING EVE- RY TUESDAY AT 10:00 A.M. MARLENE ARISS 20+ YEARS OF VOLUNTEERING Marlene Ariss came to the Moose Jaw & District Seniors Association over 20 years ago. She and her husband Larry had moved in from the farm in the Coderre/Courval area and she was looking for something to do. When she first wanted to join the minimum age was 55 and she wasn t quite that age. But she started doing some activities and has stayed here ever since. She started out in the painting class but over the years she and the others she had painted with slowly stopped painting. Marlene however, continued to come each day for coffee. Marlene volunteers in a couple of areas at the Centre. She helps make sandwiches for various card tournaments and special events as well as doing work with the memberships. While that isn t an every day job, she makes a point of checking each day to see if any memberships have come in. Over the years, Marlene has met a lot of great people. And that is what keeps her here. She has made some nice people and enjoys volunteering. Marlene & Larry have two children one in Gravelbourg and one in Lloydminster. They also have 6 grand children and 10 great grand children with one more soon to come! Thanks Marlene for all you do at the Centre! It is because of dedicated volunteers like yourself that the MJDSA is a great place to be! Page 5

7 THE SHUFFLEBOARDS COURTS ARE BUSY TWICE A WEEK AGAIN JOIN US FOR CARPET BOWLING MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS AT 1:00 P.M. Thanks to Sandy Ramage, Cheryl Wowk, Wayne McGregor, Terry Laroque Richard and Earl Berard for all their hard work getting the shuffleboard courts stripped and refinished for the shuffleboard tournament this summer. We had nothing but compliments about how nice the courts were and as a result a group of avid shuffleboard players approached us to see if they could shuffle here twice a week. Since then we have had shuffleboard going every Tuesday and Friday afternoon. Earl has spent many hours trying to make playing shuffleboard as inviting as possible to the players. For instance, he has secured free parking in the Rexall parking lot for the players, and is working on sponsors as well. Do you enjoy spending time with others and having fun? Then Shuffleboard is for you! Join us any Tuesday or Friday or both days from 1:00-3:30 in the lower level. Join us every Friday morning at 10:00 for a Jam Session. Local musicians come together to provide a morning of music, song and dancing! Whether you get up and dance or just relax and enjoy the music, you are sure to have a good time! Everyone is welcome! Denise Davidson is one of our volunteers that you don t see around as often as she used to be, but she is still there whenever we need her to lend a helping hand. Denise used to be a front desk volunteer and was a board member at one time as well. Now she just stops in for the occasional coffee and volunteers at specific functions such as fashion shows and at the flu clinics. When asked what brings her here and keeps her coming back she says the people! I just love the people. I believe that Seniors need a place to go that is designed for them and the Moose Jaw & District Seniors is that place. Thanks Denise for all you do! We appreciate you! Page 7
