2 Happy Mother s Day Earliest History of Mothers Day The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Mothering Sunday The more recent history of Mothers Day dates back to 1600s in England. Here a Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) to honor mothers. After a prayer service in church to honor Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers. On the occasion, servants, apprentices and other employees were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honor them. Traditionally children brought with them gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a simnel. Yugoslavs and people in other nations have observed similar days. Custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely by the 19th century. However, the day came to be celebrated again after World War II. Present Day Celebrations Today Mothers Day is celebrated in several countries. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. The day has become hugely popular and in several countries phone lines witness maximum traffic. A mom s hug lasts long after she lets go. ~Author Unknown Page 2 Sunday, May 8th is the day we honour our Mother s and pay tribute to their love, resilience, patience and unending understanding. It is a day where Mom can sit back and have her family take her out for a well deserved meal and we at the Moose Jaw & District Seniors have a real feast for the occasion. The festivities will begin at 9:00a.m. until 2:00 p.m., here at Timothy Eaton Gardens. The first 100 Moms will receive a flower and all Moms. Purchase two brunch tickets and you will receive a coupon for 2 For 1 All Day Breakfast (held on Mondays) The cost is only $15.00 for Mother s Day Brunch adults and $7.00 for children of ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under. 3 Golden Voices Spring Concert Cribbage Tournament Saturday April 30th 9:30-3:30 Muffins & coffee in the morning and soup & sandwiches at noon are included in the tournament price. Adele Dixon is a retired nurse who joined us as a volunteer in She started out relieving at the reception desk on a casual basis and during the winter. Recently she fully retired and is now working from 2:00-4:00 in the kitchen twice a week as well as at the front desk. Before coming to Moose Jaw, she was very involved at Regiknew she needed to meet people and be involved. She tried out both senior s clubs in town and decided she liked the Moose Jaw & District Seniors more so decided this was the place to join. Adele loves to work with her hands. She is a talented knitter and seamstress she even makes clothing without a pattern! She is an avid walker and loves to spend time gardening. Thanks Adele for sharing your time and talents with us. 4 SOCIAL DANCE Saturday May 7th, :00-12:00 p.m. Music by: Prairie Pride Cost: $14.00 Get your tickets early and avoid Eva Williams Team Leader disappointment The flood of 1973 gave Eva Williams her first taste of Moose Jaw. She and her husband came from Brandon, house hunting. She remembers seeing the old Scout Hall sitting on the railroad track, where it had been carried by the flood. Luckily that never scared her away, as today she has become one of the Centre s active volunteers. After retiring from her home daycare business, Eva and her husband moved to the Timothy Eaton s building in Two years later she started volunteering at the Centre. Eva is the team leader for the Sandwich Gang who prepare all the sandwiches and open faced buns for any catering events. When asked what she loves about the place she says it is how it is central to everything. She is in walking distance to doctors, drug stores, grocery stores and even the hair dresser. What she loves about the club is the café and the friendships she has made here. So next time you are at a card tournament or a special event where there are sandwiches or open faced buns being served, be sure to thank Eva and her team for making the sandwiches. You may have noticed some new faces in the Café over the last few weeks. Welcome to Alin and Ahlven our two new Cook s Helpers. Be sure to say hi and introduce yourself when you get the opportunity. Starting May 1st we will be having All Day Breakfast Café Highlights available on Mondays. So, if you are looking for something different from Soup and Sandwiches, try the All Day Breakfast for a change. At only $5.25 for members it is a deal! As usual, you can always order off the grill as well. Thank you to everyone for bearing with us as we have been transitioning in the kitchen. Our new menu and delicious meals make it all worthwhile. Cost: $5.00 Join us while we celebrate: Cyril McIntre s 80th Birthday COME & GO CAKE AND COFFEE Wednesday May 11, :00-3:30 p.m. Timothy Eaton s Cafeteria Every Thursday you will find one of our dedicated volunteers, Betty Lys, at the reception desk. Betty started volunteering here in She says what brought her here was her dad. He used to attend a seniors drop in Centre in another city and loved it. He was 94 years old and spent hours doing latch hook rugs. Betty thinks that is what kept him spry for so long. When he passed away she knew how much the Centre he attended meant to him so she knew she wanted to give back in some way. About the same time a friend asked her to come to the walking track with her. You had to be a member to use the track so she joined our club and checked off that she would be interested in volunteering. Before she knew it Phyllis Johnstone was calling her to see if she would volunteer at the front desk. That was 2003 and she has been a faithful volunteer since. Besides working at the reception desk each week, she comes in for the card tournaments that are held on weekends to collect the fees and help out. Seeing and spending time with all the people here is what keeps Betty coming back. Thanks Betty for always being there for us! Page 6

They say when you have a job to do, ask the busiest person. Wayne McGregor is one of those people. He is the kind of person who is willing to make sacrifices, go that extra mile and do what it takes to get the job done. When you ask Wayne how long he has been a volunteer here, he can t tell you...to him that is not important. What is important is that he IS here. Wayne is our newly reelected President of the Moose Jaw & District Seniors that he volunteers at banquets and was a team leader as well as being a general handyman around the Centre. What brought Wayne to the Centre was his wife Carol. They were members here first and then Carol started volunteering at the reception desk. Being someone who was always doing community service, becoming a volunteer at MJDS was just natural for him. Wayne is not just a volunteer here, he is a long time volunteer with the local Lions What keeps him here as a volunteer is the people. He loves socializing and helping whenever he can. He says there are so many who can t do it, so I do. Thank you Wayne for all you do! Page 7
