1 PERRY TOWNSHIP Perry Meridian Schools Musical Theater Production Fall 2016 Information Packet For students interested in working in the technical crew or cast

2 Dear Parents and Students, August 1, 2016 Thank you for your interest in the fifth collaborative musical theater production for Perry Meridian High School, Middle School, and Academy students. This year, we will be performing the musical Disney s High School Musical (One Act Version). The application at the end of this packet is due to Miss Walsh in Choir Room 5C or the PMMS / PMA front offices by Friday, August 12 for students auditioning and students applying to work on the technical crew. Auditions for middle school and sixth grade students will occur on Monday, August 15 from 2:45-5:30 p.m. at the Perry Meridian Sixth Grade Academy in the Orchestra Room. Auditions for high school students will occur on Tuesday, August 16 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room. Some students may also be invited to attend the callback audition on Thursday, August 18 from 2:45-5:30. The cast and technical crew list will be posted on the musical website on Friday, August 19. Please be aware that only a select number of students will be chosen to participate in the production. If your child is not selected, this does not mean that he/she had a poor audition or is not talented. There are simply a limited number of available spots in the cast. Detailed information about the audition procedure is explained in this packet. Once the cast is announced there will be an informational, mandatory meeting for parents and students on Thursday, September 8 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium at Perry Meridian High School. Before submitting the application, make sure that you are aware of the large commitment involved in participating in this production. The rehearsals occur all weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for the entire duration of Fall Break, except for the first Monday (Columbus Day. The three performances will occur on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m., Sunday, October 23 at 2:30 p.m. and Monday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Performances cost $5 for children and seniors and $8 for adults. Since there are only two weeks to prepare this show, students must attend all of their scheduled rehearsals. However, during the first week, not all students will be called to attend all hours of rehearsal each day. A student s individual rehearsal schedule is based on the role that he or she is playing in the production. There will be very few, if any, excused absences from these rehearsals and all conflicts must be written on the audition form. An unexcused absence from a rehearsal may result in removal from the show. Additionally, students and parents are responsible for their own transportation to and from rehearsals and performances. Although the rehearsals for this musical occur over Fall Break, students must still comply with standard school policies for behavior. Failure to behave in an appropriate manner during the rehearsal and production period will result in removal from the show. While there is no cost to participate in the musical, cast members will have to purchase some costume and makeup items and may have to provide prop pieces. Detailed information will be given at the parent meeting. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. All information in this packet is also available on the Perry Meridian High School Choirs and Musicals website: I look forward to seeing your child on audition day! Miss Melissa Walsh Director of Choirs and Musical Theater Productions Perry Meridian High School mwalsh@perryschools.org

3 Audition Procedure for Disney s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL (One Act Version) The auditions for Disney s High School Musical will occur on the following dates: - Monday, August 15 from 2:45-5:30 p.m. for PMA and PMMS students at the PMA Orchestra Room - Tuesday, August 16 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. for students in the Choir Room - Thursday, August 18 from 2:45-5:30 only for students invited to the Callback audition in the PMA Orchestra Room Parents are not permitted to sit in on auditions. You are responsible for transportation from the audition. The initial audition will include three portions: 1. SINGING AUDITION All students auditioning for High School Musical will individually sing an excerpt from the musical with provided accompaniment. You must perform from memory. You will be singing in front of one another and you may also be asked to sing in small groups, in addition to your solo. There are four song options from which you may select your audition excerpt. The music for these excerpts is attached and audio samples may be heard by going to the Perry Meridian High School Choir website ( and selecting the tab labeled Fall musical. For excerpts that include a solo in an uncomfortable range, you may choose to sing in a different octave. If characters change within your excerpt you should sing all of the solos. Song Audition Options: Counting On You Start of Something New We re All in This Together When There Was Me and You 2. ACTING AUDITION All students will prepare and perform from memory a short monologue from the show. Select one of the monologues on the next page to memorize. 3. DANCE AUDITION At the audition, you will be taught a short dance routine and will perform it in small groups. The final cast list will be posted outside of the Choir Room and on the musical website on the afternoon of Friday, August 19.

7 GABRIELLA AUDITION MONOLOGUE OPTIONS I know what you mean. At my other schools, I was always the freaky math girl. I hated it. Remember how fun kindergarten was? You d meet somebody and ten minutes later you were best friends, sharing secrets, having fun. (pause) So you really want to do the callbacks? SHARPAY Is this some kind of sick joke? They didn t even audition! Someone s got to tell the new girl the rules. Rule Number One: Pick the right clique. Two: Act like your clique. Three: Dress for your clique. Four: Know where your clique clicks. And Rule Number Five: Stick to the status quo! TAYLOR You re a genius! Look, our Science Decathlon team has a big regional match on Friday. We ve never won it before, but with you on our side, we might stand a chance. Promise you ll think about it? We d love to have you on the team. We meet almost every day after school. JACK / JACKIE SCOTT Yo, welcome back all you crazy Wildcats. This is Jack Scott, the Velvet Fog of East High with the Homeroom 411 bringing you the morning announcements: The Science Decathlon finals are coming up this Friday, so see Taylor Learning Curve McKessie for more skinny on the hooey. All for now, Peeps. ZEKE Dude, you are so totally awesome! If you can come out in the open about singing, then I can tell my secret too. I love to bake. Scones, strudel, even apple pandowdy. Someday I dream of making the perfect crème brulee. COACH BOLTON Darbus the Deranged just chewed my head off because she thinks you re plotting something about her auditions. In case you ve forgotten, you have the biggest game of your life coming up in two days. Without you completely focused, we won t win. Championship games don t come along every day. They re something special. MS. DARBUS Well, once again, they forgot to announce the auditions for the winter musical, Juliet and Romeo, written by our very own Kelsi Neilson. It s a delicious adaptation of Shakespeare s classic tragedy of star-crossed lovers with three count em, three tap numbers and a brand new happy ending! (noticing Chad whispering) Mr. Danforth! This is a place of learning, not a football court!

12 Disney s HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Synopsis On the front steps of East High, it's the first day after winter break ("Wildcat Cheer"). The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques. Basketball team captain Troy and new student Gabriella each recount meeting the other while singing Karaoke on vacation, and the rest of the students express their excitement in the new year ("Start of Something New"). In Ms. Darbus' homeroom, Troy discovers that Gabriella has just enrolled at East High. When he calls her, the eccentric drama teacher quickly confiscates all cell phones and assigns detention. Between classes, Gabriella and Troy look at the audition sign-up for the school musical, but the drama diva, Sharpay, discourages them. At basketball practice, Troy tries to shake his desire to sing at the urging of his best friend, Chad ("Get'cha Head in the Game"). Taylor, the science club president, discovers Gabriella's intelligence and encourages her to join the upcoming science decathlon. While the students learn how to "act" at detention, Troy's dad, Coach Bolton, faces off with Ms. Darbus his star players can't miss practice because Friday is the championship game! The next day, hopeful Thespians audition for the winter musical for Ms. Darbus ("Auditions"), but they're no match for Sharpay and her twin brother, Ryan ("What I've Been Looking For"). Troy and Gabriella arrive too late to audition, but Kelsi, the show's composer, plays the audition song her way and encourages them to sing ("What I've Been Looking For Reprise"). Ms. Darbus overhears and gives them a callback, which turns the school order upside down! Sharpay is furious, and some students try to break out of their cliques during lunch ("Stick to the Status Quo"). The Jocks and Brainiacs devise a plan to trick Troy and Gabriella into forgetting about the musical and committing to their respective competitions ("Counting on You"). Thinking each one has betrayed the other, Gabriella and Troy are crushed ( When There Was Me and You ) Against Ryan's advice, Sharpay convinces Ms. Darbus to move the callbacks to conflict with the science decathlon and championship game. Chad and Taylor put their heads together to make things right again ("We're All in This Together"). On the big day, while the Brainiacs and Jocks compete, Sharpay and Ryan pull off a polished callback performance ("Bop to the Top"). After Taylor's laptop shuts down the electricity, Troy and Gabriella rush to the theatre, but are too late for their callback. When the East High students arrive to rally behind them, Ms. Darbus relents, and they sing their way into the lead roles ("Breaking Free"). Back at the gym, the Wildcats win the game, and the whole school comes together as winners ("We're All in This Together Reprise," "High School Musical Megamix Bows").
