DAR representative Lynne Atkinson met with Principal Ford and students in Mrs. Dorman s 3rd Period Social Studies Class. Student representatives Chris Ashley and Shira Reaves signed the proclamation along with Principal Ford. This occasion marks the 228th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention. Homecoming Week Next Week! Constitution Week Observed Gentlemen s League The JMS Gentlemen's League is up and running again this year. Under the leadership of Mr. Leroy Bell, students are engaged in beautifying our school. Currently, they are working in our Butterfly garden off of the Media Center. The members for the school year are: Jimmy Baxley, Jyrese Fore, Trey Buie, Antonio Vaught, Matthew Walters, Tristan Perkins, Dejuan Williamson, David Moore, Justin Allen, Markeish Williams, Hykeye Woodberry, Johnny Crawford, Terry Thompson, Jymori Jones, Gregory Hopkins and Rashaan Patton. 2 Mrs. Dorman Nominated for Oustanding Teacher of America History! Congratulations to Mrs. Annette Dorman for being se- lected as the DAR Blue Savannah Chapter's nominee for Outstanding Teacher of American History. Please wish her well with the competition. The winner will be an- nounced later this year! Good luck, Mrs. Dorman! The Pretty Little Town of Marion Mrs. Rosanne Black, curator for the Marion County Museum, visited Johnakin Middle School s eighth graders on September 4th. This visit was part of a South Carolina history lesson on the history of Marion County. Mrs. Black showed a slide presentation which she narrated with interesting facts about Marion and the local people from the late 1700s community known as Gilesboro to the newly named community of Marion in the middle of the 1800s. Mrs. Black also shared facts, pictures and other items from the late 1800s into the early 1900s era. Many local people, who are featured in the museum, came to life with stories and anecdotes shared as part of the presentation. The Johnakin eighth graders received knowledge of their own town and how it fit into the events of the history of South Carolina. We thank Mrs. Black for sharing her time and knowledge with us. Our football team and cheerleaders showed Fox Pride in their game against Green Sea Floyds last week. The team was unable to pull off a win but fought hard and are much improved over last year! The team defeated Palmetto last night, 16-14! Congratulations to the coaches, the players and the cheerleaders for cheering them on despite the rain! Way to show your Fox Pride!

3 JMS Homecoming is Next Week! Students and staff are excited about our upcoming Homecoming Week. The culmination of the week s activities will be our football game Thursday, October 1st on Fox Field at 6:00. The football team will play Creek Bridge. We have 17 8th grade players who are sponsoring JMS Lady Foxes. The Homecoming Court will be presented at half time. A complete list of all players, candidates and escorts will be in our next newsletter along with pictures. We have different activities planned for each day leading up to game day. Homecoming Week Activities Monday, 9/28 Tuesday, 9/29 Wednesday, 9/30 Thursday, 10/1 Crazy Hair Day Dress for Success Day Jersey Day Spirit Day Google Crazy Hair Day for ideas! Students wear uniforms. See page 19 in the Student Agenda. Wear your favorite team jersey with khaki bottoms. Students may wear maroon and gold or a school shirt with khaki bottoms. Junior Beta Club Inducts New Members In a ceremony of dignity and honor, the Johnakin Junior Beta Club inducted new members Tuesday, September 15th. Member Kiyauna Garner welcomed the large group of parents and family members. Sponsor Chrissy Ouzounian recognized this year s officers who participated in the candlelight ceremony. Officers are: Trey Buie, President; Reagan Atkinson, Vice President; Armani Sanders, Secretary; T.J. Sanders, Treasurer; and Antonio Vaught, Reporter. Each officer explained the meaning of the candle they lit. All new members recited the Junior Beta Pledge. Sponsor Ouzounian, Sponsor Stevi Morris, Principal Rebecca Ford and Assistant Principal Milton Brown presented certificates and congratulated each new Beta member. Those inducted were: 8th Grade: John Cox, Davion Davis, Megan Elliott, Ri Kea Narciso, Andrew Smith, Stephani Vance, Briana Wiggins; 7th Grade: T aira Davis, Khia Edwards, Dominique Hart-Baldwin, Hailey Kirby, Matthew Lane, Jadan Lewis, Ta yon McCormick, Jordan Reichardt, Arriyona Rogers, Jaidyn Scott, Kayla Washington; 6th Grade: Jessie Campbell, Christopher Foxworth, Marquese Foxworth, Allyson Grice, William-Lavon Gurley, Nakia Hannah, Emily Hudson, Kristina Jenkins, Lacey Johnson, Hannah Lawson, Jonazia Lewis, Madison Ray, Ja Niya Sheppart, Sai Siviani Vishnubhotla, Hanna Wheeler, Virginia White, and Rebecca Yates. Light refreshments were served at the conclusion of the ceremony. Ms. Ouzounian and Ms. Morris were available to meet with parents to explain our World s Finest Chocolate fundraiser which is going on now. Students have to sell 2 boxes to be eligible to go to the Beta Convention this winter. 4 Wigwam Wonders The 8th grade social studies classes of Mrs. Annette Dorman and Mr. Wallace Foxworth recently completed a project for their Native American unit. The students studies the types of dwellings that the local Native Americans lived in during the pre-history period. The students discovered that many Native Americans in this area lived in wigwams. Students watched a film of how these homes were built and then made their own models. They used air dry clay, pipe cleaners, paper strips, felt, and other materials to imitate the method and materials used. Students put their own creativity to work as the decorated their wigwams with items that would have been used in this type of dwelling. Students worked together in groups to complete the project. They learned about the lifestyles of the Native Americans that will carry them to high school and beyond! We love Fox Football! 6 When you purchase a ticket, you agree to the following dress code and behavior guidelines: Dress Code Guidelines *NO low cut costumes (front or back). *All bottoms (pants, skirts, and dresses) must be at least finger-tip length including any slits or holes. *Costumes that are tight or too form-fitting will not be allowed. *NO masks allowed. *NO weapons including plastic swords, guns, knives, etc. *Halter and strapless costumes are NOT permitted for the dance. Behavior Guidelines: *No Character Coaching or OSS from September 28 th until the day of the dance. We hope to see you there!
