I interviewed Mrs. Young and she gave me some information about herself. Interviewer: Do you have any pets? If so, what type and what are their names? Mrs.Young: Yes, two cats Moe and Mack. Interviewer: Is this your first time getting teacher of the year? Mrs.Young: No, I was the teacher of the year in Interviewer: What is your favorite thing about teaching kindergarten? Mrs.Young: Watching our Mickeys grow and be excited about learning and writing their own books. Interviewer: How long have you been working with Mrs. Stiles? Mrs.Young: Four years. Interviewer: What do you like most about working with Mrs. Stiles? Mrs.Young: She makes me laugh every day, she is hardworking, funny, sweet, and she is a true friend and loves our Mickeys. Interviewer: What are your plans for summer break? Mrs.Young: To catch up on sleep and spend time with my family. Interviewer: How long have you been teaching? Mrs.Young: 34 years. Interviewer: Have you always been a kindergarten teacher? If not, what other grade(s) have you taught? Mrs.Young: No, 1st, 3rd, and GED program. Interviewer: Have you taught at any others schools? If so, where? Mrs.Young: Yes, White Oaks, Corporate Landing, and Glenwood. Interviewer: Do you have any children? If so, what are their names? Mrs.Young: Yes, Caitlin, Jay Tyler, and Christopher. Now you know a little more about Red Mill s 2017 Teacher of the Year. Congratulations, Mrs. Young!

2 Battle of the Books by Micayla Rafique There was an event called "The Battle of The Books" that took place on February 2, 2017 in the cafeteria at Red Mill Elementary School. 5th grade students read 10 books and competed against other 5th grade students answering questions about the books. The top three teams went on to compete at the city - wide Battle of the Books that took place at Kellam High School on February 28th at 5:00 P.M. Fox s Rocking Readers took first place at this competition and went on to compete at the Central Library. Three Red Mill teams competed at Kellam High School. On March 15, 2017, Fox s Rockin Readers competed in the Semi-final Battle of the Books competition at the Central Library. They competed against five other Virginia Beach elementary teams. They tied for 2 nd place and went on to compete in the finals. Fox s Rockin Readers should be really proud of their performance in the Battle of the Books competition. They finished 3 rd in the finals. Way to go!

3 Visit the Creation Station in the Library By Kendall Allman Photos by Evan Laskovitch & Bane Barton Did you visit the Creation Station! Everyone was excited to visit the Creation Station, and there's no question about why! The Creation Station is a fun section of the library where you can create and observe. Every month the stations change, so you have a variety of options through the year. From slime to puzzles to breakout boxes, you can never be bored in the Creation Station! Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Batkins were inspired for this clever school attraction by a boy who made a cardboard arcade. Now students beg their teachers to hand over the permission tag, and try to act perfectly to earn a trip to The Creation Station. The Creation Station offers students fun education, they don't even know they're learning! You can take apart electronics to take a look on the inside, mix up special ingredients into slime, challenge yourself with "The Engineer Challenge", or strain your brain with a Breakout Box! Have you been to the Creation Station yet? If not, I suggest you give it a try!

4 Final Mile By Avery Hunn & Hope Kelly Photos by Bane Barton On a wet and rainy day on March 18, 2017, 5,000 people came to the final mile. WOW! Here s an interesting fact: The first final mile was held in 1973! Red Mill was in the first coral. There were 150 students participating from Red Mill. Students prepared by participating in the running club. Everyone in the running club had to do 26.2 miles before the final mile. Mrs. Parker is in charge of the running club. Some other teachers such as, Mr. Parker, Mrs. Scheuer, Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. O, and many more helped! Reed Kindly, a 4 th grader in Ms. Martinette s class, got 8th place! If you are interested in doing this next year, we will be doing this again! HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!

5 Our Beautiful Fish Tank By Chloe McCall Pictures By Sydney Stone We interviewed Mrs. Hart about our fish tank. Interviewer: Why were the old fish replaced? Mrs. Hart: They were actually moved to the other tank. Interviewer: Who put the fish in the tank? Mrs. Hart: Me! Interviewer: Who cares for the fish? Mrs. Hart: Once again ME! Interviewer: What are the names of the fish? Mrs. Hart: We don't know yet, Red Mill is having a rally to decide the names of the fish. Interviewer: Will more items be added to the tank? Mrs. Hart: Yes! Blue rocks on the right side and more fish on the left side! Interviewer: What type of fish are they? Mrs. Hart: On the right, different styles of fancy goldfish like the Oranda. Interviewer: What else do you do to make sure the fish are healthy? Mrs. Hart: Change 20% of the water every week and clean the filter once every month. Thank you so much Mrs. Hart. It means a lot that you care about these fish and other animals. If anyone sees this article, make sure to give a shout out to Mrs. Hart and all the hard work she puts into it. WE LOVE YOU, MRS. HART!!!!!

6 Go Rescue Spaghetti Dinner Story & Photos by Emma Pudney Woof! Woof! Red Mill has had their annual Spaghetti Dinner! Dogs are adorable! Don't you agree? The Spaghetti Dinner donated most of the money they collected to the Go Rescue dog shelter. The money also helped raccoons. Hungry y all? Look no further! The Red Mill cafeteria staff made spaghetti, breadsticks, and salad. Did you eat all of your fruits and veggies? Then I hope you saved room for desserts! For dessert you could purchase chocolate chip cookies from the cafeteria staff, or you could purchase brownies, popcorn, cupcakes, and Girl Scout cookies to donate money to help Girl Scouts! Are you thirsty? Would you like water or lemonade? Adults prefer water while kids drink their sweet lemonade! Are you bored and full of food? Then why don't you look around! You could donate money to put raccoons with disabilities in shelters! You could also put tickets into a raffle! There was a big plush dog that sadly nobody put tickets in! There were also dog leashes, bug spray and chew toys! I hope you enjoyed the Go Rescue Spaghetti Dinner!

7 Mismatch Day! By Hope Kelly Photos by Evan Laskovich Mismatch day was a terrific day full of mismatched fun! Red Mill Elementary dressed up in their craziest clothes to show their school spirit on March 31st. We had stripes, plaid, polka-dots, black and white, red and blue. We thank all of Red Mill for showing their school spirit! Woo hoo!

8 Red Mill s Courtyard & Koi Pond By Addison Boeding Have you been in the Red Mill courtyard? There are many amazing works of nature like box turtles, flowers, and fish! Some flowers in the courtyard are roses, orchids, violets, pansies, tulips and azaleas. They come in pink, purple, white, and yellow. Also, if you're lucky, you'll see a turtle! There are Box Turtles, and Red-eared Sliders! There is also a pond surrounded by leaves that holds a magnificent kind of fish. Koi! There are big and small Koi and they come in many different beautiful colors like orange, white, or even pink! There is also a pretty garden made by Red Mill's first graders! And you know who we should thank for all of this...? THE AMAZING MRS. HART!!!!!! Thank you for providing Red Mill's wonderful courtyard!

9 Grade 4 Rain Project Rain, Rain, Go Away! By Rania Jacob "Drip drop." The water drips down to the rain barrel. 4th graders and the art club worked hard on this project. It all started with an outreach program about pollution and our water sources. Later, in the end of the outreach program they talked about the water barrel and how 4th graders would be able to write a haiku poem. The poem could be about conserving water and how to use the water barrel. The winning poem would be painted onto the barrel. The best decorated water barrel in Virginia Beach would win. Mrs. Clark made the decision of what haiku would be chosen and be put on the water barrel. She chose Maya from Mrs. Murphy's class. The art club decorated the water barrel with fish and other sea life. So this is our water barrel! Dolphin Splash Variety Show By Kendall Allman And the crowd goes wild! This year Red Mill Elementary had the Dolphin Splash Variety Show, and it was great! Who knew Red Mill had so much talent? This reporter happened to take part in the Talent Show, and I know I put LOTS of work into my magic routine. I was in this talent show doing magic with Emma P. Everybody had a great, well-rehearsed act, and some were so enthusiastic they even practiced their act during recess! There were dancers, plenty of singers, comedians, gymnasts, magicians, and musicians with wonderful acts. That's why it's called a Variety Show! Of course, everyone called it a talent show, including hosts Mr. Schmidt and Mrs. Pierce. There were student and teacher comedians, including talent show contestants and MR. SCHMIDT! During the brief breaks in which the acts were preparing, Mr. Schmidt threw out some jokes to the impatient audience. Most Red Mill school events take place at our school or at restaurants, but this time it was at Princess Anne Middle School. It was there for a bigger stage and better auditorium so the performers could really attract the spotlight! It wasn't easy to get a spot in the talent show. You had to get through auditions and dress rehearsals. Congratulations to those who got through! The spotlight narrowed down on singers, and sat on musicians. The audience roared as performers bowed or curtsied. I had a "splash" at this year's Dolphin Splash Variety Show. Go Red Mill Dolphins!

10 Hi! In this issue, I, Anna Quartararo will give you a book review on a book you've probably read or heard of, Warriors Book #1 Into the Wild! It's a roller coaster ride of anger, passion, and sadness from a cat's-eye view of the dangerous forest. The main character, Firepaw, trades in the life of a spoiled housecat to a spirited ThunderClan warrior, encountering Twolegs (Humans), other cats that are out to get him from all clans, and a dark secret. Trying to be the best cat he can be, he makes a choice. Read the book to find out what choice he makes. Already done with the first book? There are 5 more books after that and 3 more series including a bonus series showing how the clans came to be.
