May 6 Pizza Lunch - Progress Reports go home May 9 Mother s Day - Coffee Social/Bake Sale May 10 Confessions for 6th through 8th grade May 11 Hot Lunch May 13 Pizza Lunch From the Office of the Principal This has been a truly exciting week in the life of our school, full of fun-filled events, spectacular spirit days, and awesome academic awards! Our Silent Auction was spectacular! The decorations, food, and auction items were wonderful and the bidding wars were entertaining and profitable, as many class crafts fetched hundreds of dollars. Please join me in thanking our wonderful HSA, our parent volunteers, our teachers, and students for making this auction a success! Please see the additional message from our HSA contained in this edition of the Thursday s Notes.

2 The Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade had a wonderful experience at the Baltimore Aquarium yesterday! The students raved about the sharks, stingrays, dolphins, and jellyfish! Mrs. Gibbins, Mrs. LeGrand, Miss Kimm, and Mrs. VanDen Bosshe did a wonderful job planning a trip that I am sure will not soon be forgotten! Our students continue to shine as examples of the stellar education we provide at St. Hugh Catholic School. This year, ten students were honored by the American Legion Auxiliary for their award winning essays on Americanism. Ayesha Baugh, Macrae Derdeyn, Stella Green, Evan Divers, Kameron Daniels, Sekou Brown, Ryan Campbell, Mona Gizaw, Morgan Khan, and Sarah Larkin were recognized at the award banquet where they also shared their speeches. Mona Gizaw not only won first place in her division, but also placed in the next level of competition, winning third place in the Southern Maryland division WOW! In addition, Michael Bushema was selected as the If I Were Mayor, I Would essay contest winner representing Prince George s County. Michael will be recognized by Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown, and receive a Governor s Citation, an award plaque and $100 cash at a special ceremony at the State House! It is obvious that our teachers continue to challenge our students academically. We are proud that our teachers and students have been recognized for their accomplishments. Please join me in continuing to pray for our school, our parish, our students and their families. May the words that we speak, and the things that we do, be acceptable in His sight. In His service, Mrs. James Word of the Week The current Word of the Week is: prudent. The students really enjoyed using prudent in their writing and in everyday conversation; here are a few examples of the finest and funniest sentences: When I am prudent, I get a green sticker.-kennedy 1 st Grade You should be prudent when you are in the street.. Ella 2 nd grade Word of the Week Winner: FIRST TIE!!!!!! The U.S.A. should be more prudent in their economic spending. Macrae 6 th grade Dr. Dorothy Height was a prudent activist.-evan 6 th grade Please try to use this week s word during dinner conversations or on long car rides. Stay tuned to Thursday s Notes for the new word next week. Uniform Reminder In an effort to make compliance with our uniform policy easy for every student, we have amended our policy on shoes. Students who are NO LONGER ABLE TO FIT INTO THEIR TAN UNIFORM SHOES will be allowed to wear BLACK or BROWN SHOES for the remainder of the year. Students will not be penalized for being out of uniform, PROVIDED THAT THEY BRING IN THE SIGNED SHOE PERMISSION SLIP. Also, students are now allowed to wear Spring Uniforms! However, you may want to continue sending an official ST. HUGH KNIT SWEATER or ST. HUGH PE SWEATSHIRT for chilly mornings and rainy afternoons. If your child has outgrown other parts of the uniform and you would like to receive a used uniform for a significantly reduced rate, please contact Mrs. Cepko as soon as possible.

3 Calendar and MORE Schedule Changes!!!!!!! There will be a NOON DISMISSAL on Grandparents/Family Friend Day!!! Please mark your calendars!! Also, please fill out the dismissal form attached to this edition of the Thursday s Notes so that your child s visitor has official permission to take your child at the end of the day. During the final week of school (June 7 th -June 11 th ), we will dismiss at our normal time. There will be full days during the entire last week of school. The 8 th grade will also have increased instructional time during the week of June 1 st. The 8 th graders will not have half days; instead they will be dismissed at 1:45pm on June 1 st, 2 nd, and 4 th. The 8 th grade luncheon will be held on June 4 th in Grenoble Hall from 1:45pm.-3:00pm. Thank You!!! Your Home and School Association would like to thank everyone who helped make this year s Spring Dinner & Auction such a fun and successful evening! This year we used the Cruise to the Future theme to celebrate the efforts of our children and their teachers. Many parishioners joined with school parents for an entertaining night of terrific food and friendly competitive (and often very funny) bidding which made for a great night of fellowship at our Church. Thanks especially to those of you who donated your time, who donated auction items, and who were able to come and enjoy an evening out with friends from the school. Our St. Hugh s Youth Group babysat for 30 children, and it sounds like they had a great time with the teenagers from the parish. Altogether, it looks like the night was a success, and this includes being financially successful as well. We hope to have the $,$$$ results in time for next week s Thursday s Notes. By now all of the children should have gotten their Certificate of Appreciation from the HSA. Thanks to their help, everyone enjoyed how great Grenoble Hall looked with the flags, flowers, and fish decorations they had been making last week. All of you kids are Terrific! Volunteer Hours All volunteer hours must be turned in by Friday, May 7 th. This includes the school board, room parents, and CYO. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Cepko at Talent Show News Art submissions for the Talent Show are due Wednesday May 5th. The art room will be open from 3:00-4:30 pm, May 3 through 5 if you wish to work on your project there. There are two mandatory rehearsals: Thursday, May 6, and Friday, May 7 from 3:00-5:00 pm in Grenoble Hall. Mrs. Goltz sent home an info letter with permission slip with the talent show participants yesterday, April 28. Permission slips are due Wednesday May 5 to participate in the show. The Talent Show is Saturday, May 8, with potluck dinner at 6:00 and the show at 7:00 pm. Ticket orders are due Monday, May 3rd. Ticket are $5 per family as well as a dish. 4 CYO NOTES: Track & Field: Meet #5 will be held on Saturday, May 1 at Highpoint HS in Calverton, MD. The final meet before the Championships is scheduled for May 8. Our athletes are poised to qualify for the Championships which will be held on May 15. Only the top 12 in each event and age/gender group advances. More to come on team accomplishments! PRACTICE NEXT WEEK WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY! Please contact Coach Karen with any questions or concerns at karenmspruill@yahoo.com. End-of-the-Year Luau: St. Hugh s OYM/CYO and HSA are hosting a Luau on Friday, May 28 for all St. Hugh s School families, teachers, and staff as well as the St. Hugh s Parish. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with planning, setup/cleanup, etc. for this big end-of-the-year blowout can contact Terri Weber (terweb95@verizon.net or ) or come to the CYO Board Meeting on Monday, May 3 at 7:30 pm in the rectory.
