1 Monday, November 27, 2017 Thanksgiving By Mattie Thies Did you know that Thanksgiving is celebrated every fourth Thursday of the month of November? Well, that means that it falls on Thursday, November 23 this year. Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Liberia, and Norfolk Island. The holiday started in 1621 and has been celebrated for 396 years now. It is celebrated as a harvest festival and a coming together of people to give thanks for their blessings. Most people celebrate Thanksgiving with a feast of turkey, potatoes, gravy, green beans, bread rolls, carrots, stuffing, pecan or pumpkin pies, and a cranberry dish. For many people this is their favorite holiday, not only because of the great food, but because they may get to see family members that they wouldn t otherwise get to see. Thanksgiving is a great holiday, because it brings people together. You get to make great food and, for many people, watch football. News to Remember Mon., Nov. 3 p.m Thurs., Nov. 6 p.m. Home J.H. This day is for recognizing those who work at Skywarn and all their contributions to their communities. Skywarn is a national weather service that consists of spotters who report what is happening to weather professionals, sometimes making life saving decisions. Spotters can be concerned citizens, radio operators, truck drivers, pilots, public safety officers, or anyone else that is willing to put forward their time and effort. By performing this duty they help protect people from hazardous weather such as hail, tornadoes, or flooding that may not have been detected on the radar. People that are Skywarn operators can participate in this holiday by contacting other spotters via radio or by visiting a National Weather Service office. National Skywarn Day is important because it gives the volunteers and weather professionals at Skywarn the recognition they deserve. This holiday is a time for people to thank the dedicated volunteers that help predict and warn us about harmful weather. So, if you know anyone that has or is a Skywarn volunteer, make sure to thank them for their service to their local community.
3 Monday, November 27, 2017 Page 3 J.H. Student Council This year the JH student council consists of Kenzie Nelson (President), Griffin Moore (Vice President), Ben Carver (Secretary), Michael Hechavarria (8th Grade Representative), Dannon Prysock (8th Grade Representative), Kendyl Drummond (7th Grade Representative), Wylee Goff (7th Grade Representative), Grayson Zdybel (6th Grade Representative), and Hannah Miller (6th Grade Representative). This year the student council members are going to be doing a lot of fun things. Each month the members plan to go to Big Bend to play BINGO with the residents. By the end of the school year, the student council will end up going to Big Bend seven times. Another community volunteer activity the student council will participate in the Holiday Project in December. Also in December the student council will host a JH dance which will be held from 7-9 P.M.. Finally the student council plans to hold a Quiz Bowl for the students at the end of the school year. The student council will work very hard this year to take in everyone s considerations from the student body. They will also help to create a positive environment for the Slater Junior High Students as well as the Elementary Students at Slater School District. Rosa Parks Day By Benjamin Carver Rosa Parks Day is celebrated on December 1 and February 4. The reason Rosa Parks is celebrated on two days is because February 4 is when she was born and December 1 is when she was arrested for her civil rights activist movement. Even though the 1st is when she was arrested, African-Americans in the United States arranged the 5th of December to be a one day boycott to not ride the Montgomery buses. It soon turned into a 381 day boycott and at the time, the Montgomery city buses were mainly rode by colored people. During this time, 75% percent of all riders were colored to be exact, so this made some Montgomery city buses go bankrupt. Rosa Parks was born in 1913 to James McCauley and Leona McCauley. Rosa s education started at home when her parents taught her to read. At six years old Rosa was in a one room elementary school. When she was eleven she was enrolled into Montgomery Industrial school. A short time after she graduated the eighth grade the school closed down. Then, in the eleventh grade, she dropped out to care for her sick grandmother. When her grandmother passed, she returned to Montgomery, Alabama to work in a shirt factory. When she turned 19 she married Raymond Parks. Raymond and Rosa were both members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Rosa was so involved that she was the secretary for the NAACP. One day Rosa left her job thinking about setting up an NAACP workshop. Distracted, Rosa got on a bus with a driver she did not like. This driver had kicked Rosa off of a bus before, so she tried to stay away from that driver. Unfortunately that day she boarded the bus sitting in the colored section when a white man boarded the bus also. There were no seats open for him so the bus driver ordered Rosa to give up her seat. Rosa refused to obey his command and was fined $10 and was arrested. People always say that I didn t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day.... No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in, Rosa said this in her biography My Story. After Rosa was released on bail, African-American leaders organized a boycott that lasted a bit over a year. People like Martin Luther King Jr. set up this boycott in efforts to challenge public transport segregation. As a result, many African-Americans lost their jobs including Rosa Parks because they supported the boycott. Even as a young woman, Rosa Parks changed the world by one simple act. She refused to give up her seat to a white man. Shortly after, the U.S. Supreme Court declared segregation on city buses unconstitutional. One small act can change the world. Let s all honor Rosa parks. Source: Rosa Parks Day. (n.d.) African-American Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations, 1st ed.. (2007). Retrieved November from
4 Page 4 Monday, November 27, 2017 National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day On December 7th we remember all those who died when Pearl Harbor was bombed. There were more than 3,500 Americans that died on this day. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is observed all across the nation. This year we will remember everyone who lost their lives on Thursday, December 7, On December 7th everyone should put their flags outside of their houses. There are also memorial services that happen on this day to commemorate the event. Some other activities that happen are wreath-laying ceremonies, speeches, and media stories on some of the survivors from the attack. Schools should do activities on this day so that children can have knowledge on what happened. It is important for everyone in the United States to have knowledge on what happened in their country on this day. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance day is not a federal holiday which means that government offices, schools, and businesses do not close on this day. This is a recap of what happened at Pearl Harbor in December of On December 7, 1941, the Japanese came and bombed Pearl Harbor, which is in Hawaii. The bombs were dropped at 7:55 a.m., Hawaii time, on what was a Sunday morning. This event was devastating to everyone in the United States. Many people like to say that Dec. 7, 1941 is a date which will live in infamy (Kearns, 2015). The Pearl Harbor attack led the U.S. into World War II. There have been many things created and put into place to honor the many people who survived Pearl Harbor. The Arizona, one of the ships destroyed during the bombing was partially sunk during the attack. This ship has now been transformed into the USS Arizona Memorial to mark the final resting place of the crewmen killed that fateful day. Survivors of the attack have the option to join their lost comrades and make Pearl Harbor their final resting place. Crew members who served on board the USS Arizona during the attack- the ship that experienced the most devastating damage- may chose to have their ashes deposited by divers beneath one of the sunken Arizona s gun turrets. Roughly 30 Arizona survivors have chosen this option and less than a dozen of the 355 survivors are still living. Other military survivors can choose to have their ashes scattered wherever their ship was located during the attacks (Kearns, 2015).There were 18 ships destroyed when the Japanese attacked. Now you have some knowledge on the Pearl Harbor attack. Remember on December 7th to honor everyone that was hurt or killed during the bombing. It is important for us all to set aside a moment and remember all of those who lost their life on December 7, So many people s lives were effected by this tragic event that led to World War II. Source: Kearns, L. (2015). 7 Facts You Didn t Know About Pearl Harbor. Retrieved from Plagiarism By Grayson Zdybel What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is where you copy other people s work and steal other people's thoughts. Can ideas be stolen? The answer is yes. Original ideas are more personalized and are personal property of the person who wrote or created them. Plagiarism is often something that people use when they have lack of knowledge or skill in a subject. Plagiarism is both stealing someone s work and lying after you have done it. Plagiarism is dishonest and disrespectful. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of high school students nationwide admit to using plagiarism on their tests. The Slater School District policy on plagiarism can be found on the Handbook as follows: The intentional use of non-original material in written or oral format without crediting the source. 1. F on assignment and Friday School 2. F on assignment and 2 days Friday School 3. F on assignment and 1-3 days Transition Plagiarism is not a good thing to do and you can have several consequences if you do it. It is unoriginal and can be hurtful to other people s work. Plagiarism is bad because you keep yourself from learning and what you might need in the future. DON T DO IT.
5 Page 5 Monday, November 27, 2017 Veterans Day Assembly By Grayson Zdybel Did you know Veterans Day happens on November 11 each year? Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor all individuals who have and currently are servicing in the military. It always falls on November 11th and has been a federal holiday since This year Veterans Day is going to be celebrated on Saturday, November, 11, so the federal holiday will also be recognized on November 11. In 1918 on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month our temporary cessation of hostiles was declared between the allied nation and Germany in World War I. The first Veterans Day in the United States was celebrated on October 25, In Europe, Great Britain, and the individual countries it is common to observe 2 minutes at 11 am every November 11. Veterans Day is often celebrated in the United States with parades and church services. Slater School District celebrated Veterans Day this year on Friday, November 10, with an assembly to honor veterans. Local schools that attended were Hardeman, Orearville, Miami, and Gilliam. The assembly lasted about 45 minutes and was attended by many area residents. This year s Veterans Day assembly was led by students from the Slater School District. Many of the students personally thanked the veterans in attendance for their service. The Purple and Gold would like to thank all those who organized, participated, and attended this special service. National Inspirational Role Model Month Every November National Inspirational Role Model Month is celebrated. This is a time when people appreciate those that they admire and call their role models. We probably all have people that we admire or who made a difference in our lives. These people might be our role models, but you don t have to know a person personally for them to be an inspiration to you. A role model can be anyone who has done something, even if it isn t directly to you, that changed your life for the better. Some ways you can be a role model are to treat others the way you would want to be treated, follow through on commitments, be responsible, and always strive to improve yourself. Most people have role models because they can be helpful. A role model can be an example of how to be successful or responsible, help you overcome obstacles, help you learn from mistakes, and inspire you. So during this month of November make sure you are appreciative of your role model. You might even strive to be someone else s role model be demonstrating traits worthy of a role model. Chromebook Review By Chris Abney Chromebooks are currently being used by all students grades 3-12 in the Slater School District. Students are very lucky to have technology available to them throughout the school day, however Chromebooks need to be handled with care as they are being used daily. The Chromebook has become more popular in recent years due to the fact that they are a cheaper alternative to desktop computers. They are also mobile devices for students to have with them when they move room to room. There are some really important things to remember when using a Chromebook. For instance the screens are so weak that if you accidentally leave a pen in the Chromebook and shut the lid on the base it could crack and break the Chromebook's screen. The screen can even possibly crack if touched too hard with your fingertip. Also, the battery power can die out quickly if left open all day, so when it is not in use students should close the lid to save their battery. The strengths of the chromebooks is the built-in-security, the fact that they're really inexpensive, easily managed, and mobile. It is important to remember that Chromebooks are a privilege and should used appropriately throughout the school day. This is a great addition to our school and if handled with care should travel with each student until they graduate from high school. Source:
