1 Penglais Newsletter Mawrth / March Rhif/No. 75 ROAD SAFETY The School Council and members of staff have drawn attention again to the issue of road safety at the rear entrance to the school and, in particular, the crossing area between the Sixth Form Centre and Brynamlwg. Despite the installation of traffic calming measures some cars still travel too fast in this area. The danger is increased by cars parking on the brow to drop pupils off. The access to the school site is very restricted and the only through road is heavily used by buses at the beginning and end of the school day. Parents are asked to exercise the greatest care at these times and to be patient if staff on duty give priority to buses and taxis entering and leaving the site. YEAR 10 DONATE 800 TO OXFAM Again this year, Penglais School Council donated over 800 to Oxfam Unwrapped. Form 10JI was recently presented with a shield for raising the most money out of all the form groups in the school. Dr. Ibbotson (form tutor) and the pupils raised a fantastic enough to buy mosquito nets, school supplies and two chickens, save trees and provide green energy, care for mothers and safe water for 10 people. We are so proud of 10JI. SCIENCE THE BRITISH BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD 2013 Congratulations to two of our A Level Biology students who took part in this competition gaining enough points to be awarded certificates. Seren Dupont 42 points (Bronze), Rowena Donnison 39 points (Highly commended). The British Biology Olympiad is open to all post-16 students in the UK. EAL PUPILS VISIT ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY FOR THE HAY SCRIBBLERS TOUR Yesterday we went to Aberystwyth University for the Hay Scribblers tour. The group took part in a poetry workshop and then we met the authors Damian Dibben and Laura Dockrill. It was really interesting listening to them tell us about their stories and what inspired them to write. Damian Dibben told us about Jake Djones, in the History Keepers. He is a boy who travels back in history with the history keepers on a quest to find his parents, who are lost in time. We then tried writing an exciting first line of a story to encourage people to read on. Laura Dockrill likes food and sampled our Pringles and Maltesers! She wore CAKE STALL a very colourful dress and she said that people should dress as if they are going to a birthday party! She talked to us about her new book Darcy Burdock and how Darcy meets with the octopus. It was a very funny story! We then imagined that someone we knew was an animal and we had to describe them. Ignacio s friend was a lion! At the end of the day we bought copies of the books and the authors signed them, with a nice message for us. We really enjoyed the day. By Ignacio Espinoza Rojas and Kimberly Hau A cake stall was organised by the EAL pupils and staff for Comic Relief. There were all kinds of cakes including chocolate cakes, muffins, sponge cakes, and different cakes from around the world. The pupils raised 71. Thank you to all who contributed and bought the cakes!!!!!!!! Rodrigo Barroso. Eventing Championships of Great Britain SCHOOL UNIFORM Pupils must wear full school uniform to school. 5 Newsletter FAIR TRADE FORTNIGHT FASHION SHOW 2013 The Penglais School Fair Trade Group (Chloe Crowl, Julia Ellis, Emilia Meissner and Katherine Lewis) led by Ms Kath Porter produced an amazing fashion show on March 1 st to raise awareness of Fair Trade, ethically sourced and recycled clothing available in the local area. The show included outfits from Polly s, Wench, Cafe Society, Alison Jones Schoolwear, Clive s Menswear and Inc. The group is very grateful to all of these businesses for their support. Parts of the event were used to showcase the amazing talent of some Years 7, 8 & 10 Penglais students who have designed and made their own clothes from items such as recycled sweet wrappers, newspapers and fleece. During the interval the audience were treated to some traditional Ghanian drumming from master drummer Emmanuel Okuni Annang. The Fair Trade Group will use this event to help them gain Fair Trade Status for the school and very importantly, continue to educate pupils and staff about the need for Fair Trade to help people in less economically developed countries to benefit from trade and improve their standards of living. The Fair Trade Group is looking to recruit new enthusiastic members to help on its Fair Trade mission. If you are interested please see Ms K. Porter (English). 5
6 St David s Day Celebration On Friday 1 st of March all pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 attended our annual St David s celebration in the Great Hall. The morning closed with an enthusiastic rendition of Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau led by the school junior brass band. This event was a lovely opportunity to celebrate the talents of our pupils and appreciate the culture of our School, Ceredigion and Wales. 8 Help raise funds for Cancer Research UK In Memory of Suzu ( ) Suzunosuke Kubota visited Penglais School in July 2011 through the exchange programme Penglais has with Otemae High School in Osaka, Japan. At the time, he had already been treated for a rare cancer that affects children and young adults. By the time Penglais students, including many friends he had met on his visit to Aberystwyth, visited Japan in July 2012, Suzu s cancer had returned. He knew there was a good chance he would not survive and, despite the best efforts of doctors, he died on 30 January He was just 18. Suzu wanted to help cancer patients all over the world. During his illness, he helped publicize the situation of cancer patients through campaigns and the media in Japan. Sam Harvey, a student at Penglais from 2005 to 2012 and now studying at the University of Manchester, will be taking part in the Bupa Great Manchester Run on Sunday, 26 May 2013 to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Sam writes: I met Suzu in 2011, when he visited Wales through my school s exchange programme with his high school in Osaka, Japan. We saw each other again a year later when I visited Japan. In 10 of the best days of my life, we were able to get to know one another quite well. At the time Suzu had undergone extensive treatment for his cancer, which had returned, and some of the physical effects were evident. However, his kind, gentle personality never faltered. He smiled and laughed a lot, he loved good food and cooking and practising kendo and, most of all, he enjoyed sharing experiences with the people he loved. We kept in touch after I came back from Japan. Suzu liked to talk about the things that made him happy. However, his condition deteriorated further during the latter half of He was always very open about his health and his treatment, and took the trouble to let his friends know what was happening even when he was left weakened by radiotherapy. Suzu s positive outlook in the face of adversity was truly inspiring to all those who knew him, and he will be much missed. I would like to honour Suzu s memory by dedicating this run to him. Please be part of the legacy that helps fulfil his dream. This is the first time Sam has done any serious fundraising, so he has no idea how much money he can raise, but however much we do manage to raise will contribute to changing people s lives for the better, and the more we raise the more of a difference we can make. ANY amount you can give is going to help! Cancer Research UK is publishing an WORLD BOOK DAY Ceredigion Museum ran a World Book Day 2013 competition to celebrate 40 years of the museum. Congratulations to Ashley Holloway and Holly Richardson from Penglais School who won First Prize in the section with their story. interview with Sam in a forthcoming newsletter, and the race will be televised live on the BBC. If you re in Manchester, do come and support Sam in the 10K run. You can donate to Sam s campaign to raise funds for Cancer Research UK directly at samharvey2013, or by handing in the money at Reception, where there should be a sponsorship form to fill in. (UK taxpayers can Gift Aid their donations.) NATIONAL STORY TELLING WEEK 8 Pupils and staff were invited to choose a book that they would wish to have if stranded on a desert island. Needless to say, this produced a huge range of responses from: one with lots of pages so that I could burn it to War and Peace! These were posted in the foyer and on classroom doors which provided lots of discussion. Watch out for the competition Guess who s coming to dinner? next term.
